OT: Super Bowl LIX - Game Thread

I didn't watch the halftime show and haven't commented on it Was it a reprise of his 2015 music?
So feel free to bow out of that conversation and go back to talking about your glory years from 40 years ago.

And? It's an opinion ... did it magically expire?

Feel free to provide something more recent that proves whatever point it is you think you'd like to make.
I fail to understand the point, what does it have to do with performing at the Super Bowl?
Decide for yourself if you think the music last night was an inspiration of change and good for children.

Weren't you questioning the guys talent repeatedly?

So someone who you independently identified as talented, an assessment no one would argue with, recognized Lamar's talent explicitly.

People defer to you when a question about baseball talent comes up, no? And I bet you'd be the first to agree - you're no Stevie Wonder.

Hahaha he never even had that. Riding a little bike in tights doesn’t count.
Surfers are the ones who actually wear tights. Most bikers do not.

Another big fail and self-own for you!

Years later, and you've somehow gotten worse at this.

No I will not agree he’s a talented musician.
He’s talented enough to excel at the art form of hip hop.
Stevie complimented him on his ability to reach his community and change things.
You see that inspiration?

You won't agree that Stevie Wonder is a talented musician?

Controversial take, especially since you already suggested him for the Super Bowl show?

Yea cyclists don’t wear tights. Surfed my whole life. Never saw anyone in tights.

Even the little dudes lies are dumb

Wetsuits aren't skintight, bro? Is that your final answer?

I've never in my life worn tights. You've definitely worn a wetsuit, though.

Would you say you've eaten more shit in the wetsuit or while stumbling on words here? Either way, quite a couple of piles, I'm sure!

This is like the Lamar vs Drake feud… inspiring music with such amazing lyrics.

Please stop.
Inner Visions and Songs in the Key of Life are two of the greatest albums ever recorded…I still have the originals in my basement.
Stevie is one of the most talented musicians who ever lived

When did we ever say we ‘Invented’ music and superstars?

Legitimately cite your sources here stoner?

What young person wouldn’t consider for example Thd Beatles and Elvis Presley music superstars?

Absurd statement by someone whining that he isn’t watching an act in their 70’s take the stage
you and the sojo who cite streaming...bahahaha

I never said he wasn't talented. You misspoke and said he was.

So with that, you have "one of the most talented musicians who ever lived" recognizing the talent in Kendrick. That settles that.

Weak sauce.

Dang you used to have some tact but that was just pathetic. And to give it a “bahahaha”?! Bro that’s just sad.

U sure you aren’t on drugs? You would have to be to find that funny is why I ask?

But please, find me the young person who wouldn’t consider the Beatles or Elvis music superstars while whining that the Super Bowl half time show isn’t someone either dead or on the verge of death the way you cited earlier.

Legitimately, not a single hit in the last 40 YEARS from your initial list🤣🤣🤣

You could throw Bon Jovi out there at 62 and every person in the entire stadium would be out of their seat singing to Livin on a prayer.

Then we’d be hearing where’s the diversity, why is the art form/cultural statement known as rap/hip hop omitted…

A really great Temptations/Four Tops cover band would have the entire stadium rocking 😊….real talent.
Get Stevie Wonder again!

My point is….EVERYONE would like it, EVERYONE is supposed to like it!
Bon Jovi?

Bro everyone in the stadium under 50 would go to sleep.

No one who wasn’t alive for the Reagon administration cares about Bon Jovi man. Aside from that, besides ‘livin on a prayer’ and ‘it’s my life’ what the hell song does anyone care about from Bon Jovi? Those songs are 40 years old.

Meanwhile, Kendrick had the #1 song in the world last year, he’s far more relevant these days than these artists some of ya’ll keep naming who genuinely haven’t had a new hit in 40 years

Kendrick appeals to a narrow portion of the viewing audience and attendees.
The stadium was a quiet sound stage during his performance.
The audience was more engaged and moving to piped in “Sweet Caroline”

The critics who applauded Lamar are versed in hip hop and the culture, they “understand” it….they know about the feud with Drake, you need to be knowledgeable in the art form to appreciate it.

Skilled musician he ain’t.
Let’s face it Rap has destroyed the legacy of black blues and Motown, there’s no correlation.

It’s not surprising The Voice and TV talent shows searching for musical talent hear nothing but classic songs from their contestants….because it takes talent to perform them

The half time at the Super Bowl should appeal to everyone, should it not?

When 2 Live Crew came out a lot of people didn't like it .
Among the most vociferous were all the black grandparents who lived under Jim Crow (we had a lot of them in town).

DMX ( "X Gon' Give It To Ya" and " Party Up") was local and I liked him.
I liked Tupac's rap about his mother, Biggies' "Hypnotize" and Cage's "A Suicidal Failure."
I like some rap just like I like some foreign films.

But I saw how kids changed from it - the violence, slurs, glorification of "thug life" and prison dress (low riding).
I've long thought rap was injected into the culture to stoke militancy.
I don't think it was intended to be used by rappers/fans against rappers/fans but that's what happened.

I get what you say about white hair - I'm just over conditioned to being called a racist because I don't like most rap culture.
I think the audience for it is getting smaller and that's a reason to try and push into Country.
People are tired of formula music with bass tracks and lyric salad being churned into same ole same ole.
Sean combs debacle isn't going to help
You are remarkably uninformed or live in a bubble if you believe the audience for rap music is shrinking in size.

Dude I’m 35, growing up we listened to rap, rock, r&b, some country, all kinds of things. Every kid in school did. These days? It’s ALL RAP that kids are listening to. It’s just that simple it’s what is popular.

Even in the 00’s and 2010’s we saw some rock and crossover acts with large appeal, groups like Foo Fighters, Green Day, Audioslave, The Killers, etc that achieved ‘Mainstream’ success. What rock band has achieved ‘main stream success’ in the last decade?

I hate to tell you this, but you are officially old, and you have officially lost touch with what is popular today with kids

Dude you are so wrong. Respectfully you are absolutely clueless on this subject. Kendrick Lamar had the #1 song in the country last year and won 5 Grammy’s. You think that’s a ‘narrower audience than Bon Jovi’?! Silly my guy…

There isn’t a form of music that has the storytelling that Rap music has these days. Kendrick is one of the great poets in all of music, every song he tells a story.

There’s certainly a bunch of idiot mumble moron rappers who just smash words together that rhyme with no rationale, these people are trash. But that’s not Kendrick.

You can say you don’t like rap music, that’s ok. But rap music is far and away the most popular type of music to listen to for the under 40 population, and it’s not going away.

The days of the old rock star who’se last hit came out 40 years prior playing the Super Bowl are over man.

Should NFL executives support a half time performance at the Super Bowl geared expressly for people under 40?

Is there no Whitney Houston like singing talent popular today in the Black community?
Taylor Swift is enormous, she’s not rap

NFL execs are primarily interested in attracting advertisers who are targeting the 25-49 age demographic yes. That age demographic currently represents a far longer customer base and spending power than the over 60 crowd.

You think many 60 year olds are downloading FanDuel? Meanwhile every guy on the planet under 40 has that app downloaded.

So to answer your question, yes, I do think the NFL is focused on appealing to a younger audience, they already know the old folks are tuning in

You’re a smart guy….Im curious what you think about rap culture?
Hippies of the last century were very aware a commune life style, peace and love didn’t translate to the business world and raising a family.
Yes, how do you think the denigration of women, the grooming, the clothing, the language of hip hop translates to life off the streets?
I’m speaking about both black and white kids.

Beyoncé played the halftime show in 2013 and did the Christmas Day halftime show this year. Dr Dre performed the halftime show just a couple years ago… But again what does any of this have to do with skin color?

Again, very important distinction, a ‘White Head’ is an OLD PERSON. It has NOTHING to do with race. It’s a reference to how when you get older, your hair turns white. That happens to everyone, white, black, Asian, Hispanic, etc.

Please stop trying to make this a racial thing when it has nothing g to do with race

I don’t want it to be a racial thing, i want it to be a music form everyone likes,
Everyone likes Taylor Swift and Beyoncé because they have talent

I think you haven’t been paying attention to hip hop if you think that’s what it is modern day.

In the 90’ and 00’s at the height of the over sexualization of women yes there was plenty of that type of music (not just in rap btw, listen to the song ‘Cowboy’ by Kid rock one time and tell me how only rappers talk down on women (kid rock is not a rapper let the record show)

These days it’s shifted. To be honest the women are taking over hip hop in ways we’ve never seen before and it’s AWESOME! Artists like Megan the Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Doja Cat are bigger today than basically every male rapper.

I think that people who think they have a culture figured out when it’s clear you haven’t been paying attention lately Damages is all, and it’s what you are doing right now.

To address one thing though, don’t ever say that rap destroyed the legacy of mo town again. Buddy rock and roll is closer to mo town than rap. Rock and roll exists today because of the black man and mo town… you’re welcome😉👍🏾

Not everyone, I know a TON of people who can’t stand Taylor’s music. I mean shoot just look at this board whenever she’s on tv!

I personally would be bored to tears watching her parade around shouting ‘She wears short skirts, I wear T shirts!’

Give me Kendrick every day of the week and twice on Sunday before I have to sit through a Taylor show.

Again man, it’s ok if you personally don’t like rap, but don’t sit here and act like it’s not the most popular form of music modern day in America.

People tuned in just for Kendrick, the only people who would be excited for Bon Jovi were tuning in anyway

The 2025 Grammy's had the lowest ratings in years despite the Lamar, Beyonce, Carpenter hype. If the Jay-X army loses ratings on free TV during Super Bowl week I can't see it helping at the SB itself much. People watch the SB mostly for the game.

I think a reason for preponderance of rap is the ease of creating it. Its easier and cheaper for labels to find some kid who plays no instrument to rhyme his way over a bass track. Most lyrics are about the same things with some word play and double entendres taken to mean deep intelligence. The boy bands that created earnings are suspiciously gone and girls are big on K-Pop music and TV series

I see new rock is mostly dead and to be honest I was never a rocker so I'm not upset. However the money in music biz is in tours and the top grossing tours all-time and for 2024 have no rappers. Truth is there isn't much money in rap itself and rappers use their image to sell overpriced stuff. They are just influencers really. Bruce, Taylor and Elton dont need to sell clothes and sunglasses to be rich - the music does it.

I watched Travis Scott and his voice is all electronic with a bunch of CG and animation - empty calories. I confess I do like listening to Tekashi 6ix9ine talk ("Only things I fear are God and the FBI") but the rap is same ole slurs and posturing with puppies and rainbows braids.

Well done article about the game itself

"When Reid was coaching the Eagles, a common criticism was that he got away from running the ball. Reid's pass rates would look almost quaintly conservative now, but before the 2007 Patriots, his Philadelphia offense leaned more heavily into the pass than just about any other team.

On Sunday, as those same fans were likely celebrating an Eagles victory, I agreed with that criticism. The Chiefs simply didn't run the ball early in a situation in which they desperately needed to take some of the pressure off Mahomes. While they used some RPOs and threw the ball early, they ran the ball just once on their first four possessions. Sure, that's only 13 plays, but a 12-1 pass-run ratio is a little extreme by anybody's standards. Throwing the ball that often is fine if it's working, but they weren't scoring or moving the ball."

So here’s the problem, you are labeling “Rap” as a catch-all for every artist in hip hop. Every form of music has its good and bad artists. As for TV ratings? They’re irrelevant today. No one under the age of 50 carries a cable subscription anymore, it’s all streams and YouTube.

Comparing Kendrick Lamar to Travis Scott and Takeshi69 is the equivolent of comparing Meg white to Neil Peart because they were both rock and roll drummers… RIDICULOUS

Buddy there’s FAR more money in becoming a rapper today than a rocker or anything else. Take a look at the bands on those highest grossing tours list. What rock band on their is less than 20 years old?

Again I’m sorry to tell you this, but you are officially OLD👍🏾

Hi! I’m in my 40s& I love 90s rap.
Nas
Dr Dre
Easy E
NWA
Wu-Tang
Cypress Hill
Snoop
To name a few…
Today’s rap is very different than it once was.
No one can deny that.

Maybe more people would have enjoyed the halftime if they brought TS out to crip walk instead of Serena. 🤣🤣
