OT: Surfer falls from giant wave.

That is one of the craziest wipeouts in history. I still think this one is much worse though. Head first into about 10 feet of water getting drilled into the reef. That this guy lived was amazing.

This was the latest "biggest day" (same day as the op). A couple of weeks ago off of Maui at a spot called Jaws. Much more impressive, in that these guys are paddling in and not using the jet skiis to tow-in, which has now become passe'. The surf game is at an all time performance high in every respect. Equipment is better, the athetes are better and surf forecasting is very, very reliable. These guys can get to swells now before they arrive. They are no longer chasing them.

I was in Oahu and Kauai last week and the North Shore Surf was nuts. The locals were amped up thinking QuickSilver was going to hold the Eddie (a big wave tournament that only happens when the wave faces at Waimea Bay reach 30-50 foot faces for 8+ hours). Most years it doesn't happen but when it does it is awesome (I saw one back in the early 90's).

A sad side note, during the high surf (20' faces) when I was there, the search operation for the 12 Marines from the helicopter collision was happening off of Haleiwa. With surf that high it is understandable why they couldn't locate the wreckage. I feel terrible for those boys and their families.
