OT: True Detective

So the guys at the Tsalal station were a bunch of goofy scientists (1st episode), and also a bunch of ravenous murderous thugs who at the drop of a hat participated in or helped the stabbing of a woman over 30 times (early in last episode), and also a bunch of cowering stooges who absolutely immediately started running around like Keystone Cops with no resourcefulness after some women came through a single doorway to attack them. And they did all of these things over destroyed data. And a single-minded, effective, aggressive advocate for the oppressed and poisoned got sidetracked because she fell in love with an unhinged, goofy, gesticulating scientist with dirty greasy hair who cowers and hides in caves. And some people at some points in time may somehow start walking toward the ocean but can be stopped or maybe can't be stopped and sometimes then die or not, and sometimes right next to each other with frozen scary faces. And these marauding fearsome women decide to attack a station full of scientists and not the management of the mine that is poisoning them and their unborn children? And why does this sometimes marauding murderous group of native people only include women when the whole town, or at least all native people, are being poisoned, including men and male children? Do the men not care? And eighteen other things.

I hate when I get to the end of a series and regret having invested my time. At least there was some good acting.

This season was god awful. Just horrible, horrible, horrible writing. There is no story happening in this show, no threads are followed, no clear antagonist, no real investigation seems to be happening, no clues, no real focus of what they want to accomplish or are even investigating. It's just a random series of music video style sequences and supernatural garbage with no greater point. Sometimes you can tell poor dialogue by the frequency of profanity and it's lack of impact, this show is bad for that, a lot of bickering about nothing.

It's really sad. There are wonderful female led stories / shows out there, Mare of East Town is a gold standard show, Sharp Objects was well done, I personally believe Yellow Jackets is the best multi-season show running on TV at the moment. It's a shame because this piece of garbage is going to get a bigger spotlight than those other shows because TD had a legacy of machismo and manhood.

They need to stop making anything under the True Detective name. They're starting to tarnish the legacy of that first season which was a lightning in a bottle masterpiece.

Acting and story were subpar.

SPOILER:

I read commentary from the director afterwards and she claims that it’s up to you to decide what happens to Navarro at the end or actually if she ever existed or was a figment of the imagination. I mean. WTAF.
Dumb

Why did every woman in this show have to act like a tough guy? Became comical after a while.

I’m going to give this series one more episode, because it is rather boring so far (nothing happens in 90% of each show).

The first two seasons had this build-up week to week that something bad is going to happen. The characters and actors were also better that the current crop.
My daughter was a huge fan of the previous TD's. I was going to binge watch this one until she told me not to bother.

Good stuff by you and @willisneverrana43

Agree with everything you guys said. If I remember correctly, the opening scene in episode 1 is hundreds of caribou committing mass suicide when the sun goes down. What are we supposed to make of that now that the show is over? That the pollution drove them to madness? I mean, that's a stretch isn't it? Or are we just supposed to think the eskimo guy that wanted to hunt them just imagined the whole thing?

Listen, I thought the acting was pretty good and I don't regret investing in the 6 episodes. But as you guys say, the resolution of all that happened is a bit unsatisfying. As far as I'm concerned, the Director saying "let your imagination decide" is an acknowledgment that the story had no cohesion.

This season was the equivalent of watching someone poop all over the bathroom.

Even though they occasionally poop in the right spot you’re confused by what is going on. When it’s over, you’re left with just shit everywhere; wondering what just happened.

You're kind. There's so much more that hasn't been mentioned. An example: in the final episode, they axe their way into a tunnel, walk a bit, act spooked, fall into another tunnel, see Clark, follow him a bit, and climb stairs to Tsalal. So the tunnel was near Tsalal. Don't you think that would be a thing; something you'd notice? As Navarro takes the first swing of her axe: hey, isn't that Tsalal right there? Frankly, why don't they have people stationed at Tsalal--this mass murder crime scene--particularly after the delivery man said that he saw someone? And the hatch to the stairs wasn't particularly well hidden, but they don't notice it because they seem to have never looked in detail at the crime scene? They put a bunch of boxes of supposed evidence in a closet at the police station, but it seems just to be a bunch of pictures of people in goofy coats and jackets.

Just a jumbled mess. To create a story like this, you have to create a viable fake world around it and things that make sense, or at least are sensible or properly shocking in that fake world, not just a bunch of nonsense, particularly when you're creating a mystery that you want the audience to try to figure out.
