Bigtime matchup today, Spain vs. Italy.

Later England vs. Iceland

The games are being broadcast at noon and 3:00pm on ESPN2 (and ESPN3).

Italy pretty much dominated the first half, but only one goal game.

De Gea pushed aside a couple of very good chances. they're catching pique out of position and florenzi is beating alba regularly down that side.

By pressing Italy is forcing De Gea to play long balls. Spain plays for possession, Italy not allowing it so far.

aduriz on for nolito is a head scratcher. spain is already playing with zero width...how does bringing in another central striker make things any better?

Spain doing a little better but still not getting it done yet

Not the great game I hoped for, but the better team won today

Spain did look a step slow and very stagnant, very few runs being made.

The Spanish/legacy Barca midfield trio looked tired and ineffective for much of the game. The insistence on sticking with an out of form Fabregas is baffling. Now its time to pay the piper...I wonder how the Spanish association is going to handle Del Bosque now...2 years until the WC and on a downward trend. Time for new blood? Pellegrini anyone?

Del Bosque contract ends in one month

Seemed to me that Spain's support play was uncharacteristically out of sync today. Support seemed always a bit late (both attacking and defending). And their first and second attackers were often not on the same page which is unusual for them in my experience. Got a bit better in the later stages of the game, but only marginally so.

Conversely, Italy seemed to have much more energy and better chemistry. They conducted a master-class on timely and well positioned support. The better team on the day won easily.

Pathetic display by Spain... looked tired, uninspired, no motivation to win...pathetic display..

DelBosque's contract expires with this euro. He does not want to continue.. He has been saying that for past 2 years..

New coach & possibly a total renovation of what's left of the great Spain team.

Pellegrini will never be the Spain coach! He is not Spanish, and besides he is uninspiring, and we already had that with DelBosque.

Whoever gets the job will have a tough time qualifying for next WC. He'll have to start from scratch and form a new team.

what is it about england that with all of their star talent, they can never seem to play well together. I mean if i'm the FA its time i start considering fielding a 2nd tier team that is all nationals and use that whole team as the national team. Lol.

They don't seem to be playing all that badly, score notwithstanding.

Not a bad game so far, but Iceland caught them with two sucker punches. Don't think the long balls from the back will work for England. Pretty open game so far, so this can go any way. Waiting to see Iceland shut it down a bit, but they are still rather adventurous.

i think the long balls are what england need, but they need to have the right triggerman playing them. and possibly vardy in the game. the ball is being held up in midfield by rooney and dier. not that rooney is playing badly, but it might be beneficial to take him out for a guy who is quicker at circulating the ball thru.

Did I hear that right, one of Iceland's players is a part time dentist?

England better not lose this one. It would be an upset for the ages.

Interesting to see the changes made. I'd take Sturridge out. That dude is way overrated.

Maybe, but whenever I see Cahill making that pass, I assume it's going for a goal kick. Wonder if Hodgson is willing to take out Dier & go w/o a defensive mid?

Agree with Cali. Take out Sturridge (or Sterling). Those two are where attacks out wide go to die.

His pass led to the England penalty score. And his brilliant pass to Kane later in the half was probably the best chance for England to score. Overrated or not, he's creating good scoring chances - so I'd think twice before taking him out.

I'd focus more on slowing Iceland's counter-attacks and would encourage more creativity in the attack. Tell the players to take more chances in the final third.

Well, well, well. So Dier is out & Wilshere in. Hodgson is at least going for it and not playing it conservative. Now let's see if he goes for more forwards.
