I'm rooting for Phil or Fowler but picking Justin Rose. He's had a very good year so far with 2 wins and 6 Top 10's. Even though he's missed the cut the past 2 Opens I think this may be the year he gets #2.

Two of the more interesting 1st 2 day groups.....

Tiger, DJ, Justin Thomas

Rory, Spieth, Phil

Would like to see Speith get back on track. Would love to see Joaguin Niemann in the hunt. In the end I don't have any golfers to root against anymore, enjoy all the young guns. Phil would be sweet to get his first
Another star of the week is Shinnecock, was there last Open when the USGA destroyed the course. Go if you can incredible place.

It seems to be on every Top 5 US Open venue list. Is this the course they screwed up the greens?

Yes. The 7th hole was basically unplayable. It lead to personnel changes and set up rules for the USGA. It was so bad and such a stain on the USGA that still has a cloud over it, that USGA president Mike Davis said this during the Opening remarks

Davis realizes that the debacle at No. 7 is the lasting image for many golf fans of this grand old course off the Great Peconic Bay.

“You saw some well-executed shots actually being penalized. I can assure you that is not what the USGA wanted,” Davis said. “And so I would just say that it was 14 years ago. It was a different time. It was different people. And we as an organization, we learned from it.”

Just did the Gold Digest video tour of the Front 9. With the exception of #7 which slopes pretty drastically right to left and back, most greens funnel toward the center or front. I guess the USGA can make these pin placements fairly easy or diabolical if so inclined.

Looks like 7 is still going to be a bear. Golf Channel showed 2 players hit what looked to be great tee shots. Both landed pin high but unfortunately about 6-8 feet left. They rolled and rolled. One ended up getting hung up 3' off the back of the green. The other ended up about 40-50' behind the green.

Players are not going to be happy about that.

Hard not to like DJ. When he puts all the pieces of his game together, its better than everyone else and he seems to be able to keep it all functioning at a high level, once he gets it going, for prolonged periods. If anyone is going to break the streak of no one winning the US Open after winning the week before, it's him, this year.

Jason Day is due to make some noise. Justin Rose is playing as well as anyone right now. And yes, Tiger. Hit the ball better than anyone at the Memorial, usually can get the putter going if he puts the work in, my bet is he has.

The course demands a creative and extremely accurate short game. If Spieth was on form, this would be his venue. Hopefully he's figured some things out.

With only 2 Par 5s , the guys who take most advantage of those Par 5s might be slightly disadvantaged. Still need to bomb it long and straight , but some of the longer hitters might get away with 3 woods and driving Irons on some Par 4s.

I'll pick an unlikely Matt Kuchar, he's overdue, and is a pretty steady, if unspectacular player.
Not a good setup for Tiger, I'll pick him to finish about 20. But think he'll contend at THE OPEN in July.

Nope and with an even more severe slope in the front. shots that come up short are dead. You'd be hitting to a green well over 10 feet above to a green sloping away.

In the final round in 2004 Phil purposely hit his tee shot in the left side trap so he'd be hitting his 2nd shot to an uphill pin. Almost put it in and got the par. I think he finished 2nd.

The extended one Par 5 to 600+. In his interview today Phil said par will probably get you a stroke over the field.

I'm skeptical that a PGA pro can't easily par a 600 yard par 5. Birdie might be a small challenge.

275yd 3 wood assuming you can't hit driver
200 yard 5 iron
125 yard PW
2 putts.

I am assuming the standard skinny fairway deep rough US Open conditions.

Even if you have to drop down from 3 wood off the tee they can still go 3 iron 240-250 and play 9 or 8 to the green. I don't see the problem Phil is talking about unless there's a windmill in the fairway they have to hit it through. (LOL)

Here's a flyover. Look at the required carry going left, 280-290? If you play a 3 wood off the tee you can only play to the right. There is a lot of potential trouble off the tee.

Jesus that looks tough. Still though these guy hit a 5I 210. They can play 5I, 5I, 7I, I'm sure I'm not parring that with those landing areas but still these guys are pros. More than not should get a pretty easy par. And if they don't well Phil knows more than I do so OK I give up. LOL

Would love to see Phil finally win the US Open after finishing 2nd six times. He's played pretty well most of the year, so it's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it at his age (47).

Have almost never rooted for Tiger before, but he's finally a more sympathetic figure, given how far he fell, and now that he's healthy again, I wouldn't mind seeing him win.

My pick, though, is Rory. For some reason, I think he's ready to put it all together again. I also think Jason Day is ready to win this. My dark horse pick is Ian Poulter - very talented golfer, who has never quite lived up to his potential.

Hope I didn't come off as a jerk. I just like talking golf.

As with all sports I talk a better game than I play.

Besides you had Phil on your side so even I have to give in to his (and your expertise) at some point.

First this is a US Open thread. Second you have never been considered a jerk on this board, unlike someone I know, who I see in the mirror everday. Third, I cant get enough golf, college football, horse racing and pork roll banter! [banana]
