OT: Washington Crossing Reenactment

Yes. Was there from about 1:15 to 2:00, then left. I got lucky and found a parking spot right by the bridge, just as a couple was leaving the small parking lot at the Patriots Crossing Tavern. That made it all very easy despite the large crowd and difficult parking. Jersey side was perfect. Walked out onto the bridge and chatted with some friends, then back to the shore. Watched the boats launch from PA, land in Hopewell to lots of cheers, soldiers disembark, Washington’s speech, and left with no delays.

I imagine that the large crowd and cheering hampered the hoped-for surprise nature of the attack on the Hessians, but George Washington seemed OK with it, so I was too.
Jersey side was perfect? Really?

The recent posts and back and forth are pretty funny. An argument on Christmas about the best viewing options for the “Washington crossing the Delaware” reenactment is pretty funny.

It wasn't an argument about the best viewing area.

I didn’t say that. I said “viewing options”, which was a little more holistic.

By the way, most terrible listeners have difficulty getting their points across and think everyone else is a terrible listener.
Viewing options AND viewing areas is the same thing. The discussion was not about viewing. It was about things going on OR not going on either side of the river. Peace out.

I have to plan ahead and get to this one year. They also do this during the second week of December too, correct? Or did I read wrong? Want to do the Knicks game on Xmas too someday but the ticket prices are insane.

Yes they do a Crossing in mid December. They charge $9 for adults. (It's their fundraiser). You get a lot more one on one with the reenactors.
You don't get the same Christmas vibe but it's highly educational and a lot fun.

Thanks! I was thinking that it may be easier to get to that one and you have the added benefit of supporting the event financially. But I’m also going to a bunch of Rutgers bball games around that time too. Either way, good to know.

Didn’t the real crossing happen at night ?
They should also consider doing a night crossing to simulate real conditions

No they shouldn't! 🤣 One, you will never get the same exact conditions, two, no one will show up in the pitch dark on a cold night. I lived there and it's really dark at night.
C'mon Plum, that's just dumb.

Do a crossing in the summer followed by a battle re-enactment near dusk. Then allow spectators to camp out overnight with the soldiers. Have some food trucks with a beer tent made up of Tired Hands, Vault, Broken Goblet and Warwick Farms breweries. Eat, drink, be merry with General Washjngton and his men. That might generate some interest.

No offense but I'd rather drive the bus into the river and go down with the ship then hanging out with either of you! 🤣🤣 Two clowns who don't go to the current event, making up other events that they wouldn't go to either 🙄

No I want to sleep in the white bus.

A summer reenactment should be done in Piscataway on the Raritan to commemorate the 1st official 4th of July celebration as ordered by Washington from their encampment there in 1778 “Tomorrow the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will be celebrated by the firing of 13 pieces of cannon and a feu de joie (fire of joy) of the whole line … soldiers are to make the best appearance possible. A double allowance of rum will be served out.”

We already have a summer Revolutionary reenactment in NJ. The Battle of Monmouth is a 2 day event at Monmouth Battlefield State Park held in June. One of largest attended reenactments in the country. Sadly @Plum Street and @LETSGORU91 will be in PA looking for an event that's not being held there.
However if anyone is giving out a free double allotment of rum on the river in Piscataway count me in.

Mine was a proposal, of which I thought was a good one. I had no plans on attending my proposal.

I don't think the people that actually go to Washington Crossing Reenactment, including myself, would think your proposal is a good one. Actually the complete opposite of good.
It's not carnival. It's a reenactment.
Funny you think it's a good proposal but wouldn't go to it, yourself. That say it all! Thanks for playing along 🤣🤣🤣

You misinterpreted the intent of my words. A proposal is just that and not an actual event. Nobody can attend a proposal. Also, I in no way meant to make it a carnival. I thought it would be cool to watch a re-enactment, hang out in camp with the soldiers overnight and drink some grog with them.

But not cool enough for you to go to. So if it isn't good enough for you, the person who didn't think it through, why would anyone else want an event that isn't even supported by you?

I would go..again, the play on words was missed..I said I wouldnt attend a proposal, because one can't attend a proposal..they would need an event created from the proposal. I know, it was a very poor attempt at humor. There's too much history in this area that's overlooked. Washington and his accomplishments here being one of them. It would absolutely be cool enough to go. But out of sight, out of mind with many things including this. I meant no disrespect to the re-enactment or the people involved.

Yes very poor attempt. I don't think it's overlooked at all. Attendance when it's not freezing or raining is fantastic on the PA side. This year was packed and shocked how many were there early. I got there around 11:20. That is a big change since my first time in 1989. It's a big tradition with so many families.
As I said earlier the Battle of Monmouth is one of the biggest attended in the country. Never been to the Battle of Saratoga Reenactment but a bucket list for me.
