OT: We may win the World Cup in 2026

Here's an article about Matias' tactics for his new club, AEK Athens. It is the same style he used in San Jose.

FWIW, he has enjoyed some success, but the project ended up in tears at San Jose. I think this style can kind of stun other clubs for a while, but eventually, it gets figured out and then opposing offenses ended scoring a lot of goals. I also think this style wears down players - a LOT of running is required.

He came from the Bielsa coaching tree. Sounds like he didn't stray far from his mentor's tactics.

I don't know about this MLS coach, but Marcelo Bielsa runs a man marking system. If you don't win the back back quickly high up the pitch, you can easily ship goals in bunches. See: Leeds when they first made it back into the premier league. His last full season at Leeds saw them give up >2 goals per game for the season. It's exciting to watch, but it's hard to win at the top level that way.

Other coaches will selectively man mark in the counterpress, just to choke off options for the player with the ball, but it's not necessarily all over the pitch.
Read through the article. But it relied on the reader knowing the names of the players to understand the writer’s description of the system. Since I don’t know them, I found a lot of ambiguity in the descriptions making it hard to understand the system. Also, I was left wondering what coaching background the writer(s) have and if they spoke to the coach about his system or if they’re just describing what they saw in games.

Anyway, I didn’t come away with a good understanding of the system.

What do you all think about the new offsides rule being tested? I like it - it's easier to judge and it should open up more attacking. Will be tested in several places first...

This is just a change to the armpit interpretation some use. Other FA's of even individual officials are more strict with any body part being across the line to count as offsides. Clarity would be welcome, whatever the change is.

Surprised no banter about the US-Canada match, now tied 1-1 after 105 minutes. Forgot it was on and tuned in near the end of regulation when Canada tied it up on a PK. Canadian keeper just made a great save on a header off of a corner...

Wow, Canada goes ahead on a somewhat lucky deflection with 10 minutes left and then the US ties it up as the keeper makes a fantastic kick save right into a Canadian defender and it goes in for an own goal. Tied up.

Gold cup this year is like preseason NFL. Entertaining if you're in a bind, but no one really cares.

As always, I hate PKs to decide a game, but nice to see Turner save the first two, even though Vazquez skied his; Cowell just made his, so 1-0, US.

That was a thrilling final 40 minutes or so! These youngsters have a lot of talent, just need to refine things. The D was shaky a couple of times on those counters by Canada. Cowell has SPEED and strength, could be one to watch. Canada's keeper had several great saves to keep them in it.

On to Panama, Wednesday night, 7 PM.

I see what you did there.

You took your own personal opinion and extrapolated it to the population as a whole.

But then, we all do that.

Well, at least I do.🙂

Not Miles Robinson's best day. Called for two handballs on the box. Got bailed out on the first, when VAR called a soft foul on the attack. The second almost cost the match. Almost.

Interesting PK shootout. In regulation, the Canadian shooter (name escapes me) scores by going right up the middle as Turner dived. That player was the first shooter in the shootout. He went up the middle again. This time Turner held his ground and made the save, followed by a long staredown.

You're probably right. But I'll have a peek at tv ratings later and it'll likely confirm my assertion.

The majority of the guys on the gold cup roster are going to be fighting to fill out the end of the Copa America and World Cup squads. This is def not even our B team. More like C team.

I kept thinking the Canadian dude was one of the Property Brothers.

That may be so, though it bears mentioning Turner is our A+++ keeper.

I've long felt the Gold Cup should be played every four years to give it more meaning. But it is what it is. I'm happy to watch our 2nd and 3rd string compete for an international trophy. Many of the players are really young - some will develop quickly. A few more matches and then on to Copa America '24.

Well, that's probably why I didn't know when the game was, lol. Still fun to see some of these young guys play and now win - a few of them might be on the next WC team - and great to see Turner getting more reps and doing well.
Love the Gold Cup. First time younger players get to break into the USMNT. There are always players who have stand out performances and become regulars on the team moving forward. Neal and Jones so far have been those players for me

I'll be at the semi final Wed against Panama

I like the fact that we're using some of the younger guys in this tourney, rather than going back to the well on Roldan, Morris, Yedlin, Long etc for 90 minutes each game. Really like Cowell, nice combination of speed, strength, willingness to take guys on, etc. Hope he plays at the Olympics then makes the move to Europe (though maybe he'll have outgrown the u23 level in the next 12 months).

Young kids are promising. Sunday wasn't the finest but for the first time I seeing something that I've never seen in American soccer. The last missing piece to being truly competitive.

Guys that have poise and clinical finishing ability.

A guy like Busio would be a no doubt starter for most US teams in the past. This is a level of depth we haven't ever had IMO.

How good is Panama ?

They are ok. Their team is older and a lot more experienced than the USA. But a scan of the roster shows that none of the players are in a top league.

Alexi Lalas is just so annoying as a commentator. He seems like a nice enough guy. I feel a little bad about being so annoyed by him. But when he talks, I want to throw stuff at the TV.

If the US is going to score, it seems most likely to be on a set piece or long ball. Panama’s midfield pretty much owns the US mids, so far at least.

Seems like the US is forcing up the middle a little too much. Some bunching up. Each team has had some chances and a crazy pace at the start of the game.

Problem is the US midfield is unable to hold possession. Seems like close to half the touches they’ve had were one-touched to a Panama player.

If I were coaching, I’d consider defending in our half only and rely on counter-attacking. Also would stop the forwards from chasing on D and have our first defenders take a half step off the ball.

Another problem is the US defenders are waaaay too slow with their touches and passes. But that usually isn’t something one can fix - it’s a skill and experience and confidence thing.

0-0 is a very good result based on the play so far. I’m interested to see what adjustments the US makes.

I would be surprised if Panama can keep up the energy level they had most of the first half. If not, that should help the US mids become more of an attacking factor. Was happening a bit in the final minutes of the first half.
