OT: Who makes the BEST Pizza You’ve ever had?

DeLorenzo's in Robbinsville
DeLorenzo's in Hamilton
Coniglio's in Morristown
Conte's in Princeton

Was going to both DeLorenzos while they were still in Trenton.

My local is Tino's in Kingston. Differently style of pie, but the Amatriciana pie is delicious.

When I was a teenager we used to drive over there and hang out almost every weekend.
Is Pizzatown USA on 22 near the GSP? Middle of the road. I had a college buddy from that area and we went there for lunch quite often (something different than RU food!).

The fake DeLo's in Hamilton is meh. Completely different type of pizza. Don't confuse it with the real one.

It is different. But the Works pie is as good as a heavily topped pizza can be, imo. I typically am a less is more kinda pizza topping guy. But that one tickles the plums.

It's different but I actually like the Hamilton one better. It's more similar to Papas than the other delos. All are great Trenton Tomato Pies along with Contes. Classicos tomato pies are also very good.

DeLo's in Hamilton is a little different but still very very good.

Federicis, Vics, Star Tavern, Contes are probably my faves and all kind of similar. Manco & Manco(Mack & Manko) always a good choice. Delucia's and Kinchleys I liked but didnt think it was good as the ones just mentioned. I like Primas better in Somerville than Alfonsos.

Need to get to Coniglio's and maybe even on a Sunday since he's been hosting Al from Santillo's since the fire.

Razza, Talula's, Porta and Nomad for Neapolitan even though I believe Razza doesn't like being called that style.

Deninos, Round Pie, and Krispy all excellent in that area.

Love Mack's in Stone Harbor. Always a summer treat. I forgot the history of all the Mack's/Manco/M&M pizza joints. Obviously, they are connected.

Not sure about the Stone Harbor one but there was a split because of some tax funny business stuff I believe.

I somehow haven't tried Maruca's either but don't really go to Seaside. I'll probably just try the Asbury one.

Maruca's is my parent's all-time favorite pizza place. More traditional style, but outstanding for a boardwalk pie!

Pizza is pretty simple. I think most pizza is good. My favorites were the local mom and pop places where I grew up.
Back when actual Italian's made the pizza.

Frederico's in Atlantic Highlands was my fave back in the day. The mom would make the sauce, she didn't speak much English.

Love Marucas...sauce!

Their sausage bar pie was really good!

There are tons of different styles and recipes and I think it’s largely a matter of personal taste as to what is “best.” I’ve been making pizza since I was a teenager (was a classmate of Henry Rutgers). Anyway, I make a 63% hydration, 48-72 hour cold fermentation. Thin crust and I I use 00 or KAAP flour and make my sausce from San Marzano DOP whole tomatoes, EVOO, sautéed garlic and a bit of onion, salt, pepper, oregano, basil. Most friends, family, and acquaintances say it’s their favorite but maybe they’re just trying to get/stay in the will…It is pretty good though cause you can use top ingredients and make it exactly the way you want.
How do you bake it? I started using an Ooni Karu wood fired oven at around 900F and it's a tremendous improvement over the 425F home oven.

Found anything good in LA? Joe’s Brooklyn pizza claims to be a real NY pie. I’m skeptical. Pitfire Pizza is the only decent thing I’ve found thus far.
Not yet in LA, but in NoCal there is Giovanni's (Sunnyvale), Slice of NY (Sunnyvale), Longboard Pizza (San Francisco), and Tony Napoletina (San Francisco). Confirmed by multiple folks with NY area pizza roots 😎

Santillo's in Elizabeth.
And Angelo's of Phillie just opened another branch in Pineville Tavern in Bucks County (just as good as the original)

I also prefer the Delos in Hamilton, though I’d happily eat all of them. What’s the difference between pizza and a tomato pie?

and ( out of business for a long time )King of Pizza in Vauxhall when it was across the parking lot from Joe's .
Star Tavern (Orange)
I definitely remember those days! Dad used to go there when Joe’s was too busy. Loved how they cooked it in the pan then removed the pie to crisp up the bottom. Also remember a good bar pie at Old Homestead in Stuyvesant Ave in Irvington as a kid in the early 80s.

Best pizza ever for me is the Tomato Pie from Palermo’s in Bordentown. You have to eat it there, right out of the oven. We go there 3x a month.

The sauce is awesome and the crust is addictive. I freakin love that pizza!!

Mom’s was always the best. She would make it on snow days. Dough from scratch, simple sauce Tomatoes, olive oil, oregano, garlic. And then mozzarella cheese.

Snow days were the greatest.

Manco is good, but I prefer Preps (in OC).
For bonus points, get pepperoni + sweet peppers. An awesome combo with a Yin-Yang thing going on with all the contrasting and complimentary flavors.

The strange thing is that I can’t remember the last time I had a great pizza. Lots of very good but no longer get that nice pull of the cheese that falls down on your chin giving a little burn.

We had a nice place up in Poughkeepsie NY near the IBM plant that made a great Sicilian- the crust was never chewy- more of an airy crispy buttery flavor to it. But that was 30 years ago- no idea if they are still even there
