Pagin Ragin Russ Wood: Paul M.

Another solid piece is the bottom line. Just keep bringing in kids like this ranked in the 50-150 range with multiple D-1 offers and we will be good to go. Some will work out. Some won't. And that's just fine. This is the way to success. The only way.
It's what we need to do to build. We need to develop guys and keep them for four years. In the past, when we have had the higher rated recruits, we served as a developmental team that sends players to Duke, UVA, Florida, etc.

Wow, one guy is trying to try this board into a nut house.
Yep, doesn't take much, when most of it is already half way there. And, all I did was to be critical of the resident "expert." What a world, what a world.
Don't worry RU faithful, I won't be back. You can all go back to your delusional world. But, remember me when this kid goes Pro a few years from now.

It wasn't so much defensive technique as it was lateral quickness and footwork. Which he may be able to improve some.

We currently have him ranked No. 138, the lowest ranked four-star prospect is No. 115, so you are talking a very strong move up in the rankings to get a fourth star. Is that possible? Sure. Will it happen at the next update? I, for one, need to see more from Mulcahy. There are a couple of more Under Armour Association sessions left, I look forward to watching those games.
Not many 6'6" kids with great lateral quickness. Gio doesn't have great lateral quickness. Length makes up some of that.

Which is your dominant eye....use the other.

Talk about a snowflake! We’ll see if he really does melt away

When we joined the B1G and seeing the games at the RAC live, that's what really struck me the most - how long all the teams are through guards to the frontcourt. We desperately needed to change our roster make-up.

thanks for the feedback @Russ Wood . I always appreciate your feedback as it is direct and I have never sensed any bias.

Pike puts such an emphasis on D, that I am confident he will develop into a serviceable defender. I also believe his ankle is likely contributing to what you saw. this kid is a huge pickup and I am thrilled to have him, even if he does have some deficiencies.

I look at it this way. We have been loaded with high energy, defensive, hustle, rebounding guys who came up short on the offensive end. If PM has defensive deficiencies, and I assume he does as it was stated before he is a three star for a reason, I am ok with that. If he can make our players better at the offensive end I am sure those same players will make him better on the defensive end. That is the culture, IMHO, that Pike is creating. This was a very good get.

That's not true. You also made blatantly false claims and the proclaimed them to be "fact". You can see why people get riled up about these things.

Can always switch Mulcahy up on defense. He is not even a senior in HS yet.

He is a good player. I trust in the staff to get him to that next level.

Why, you don't think that is true??? Less people are watching the NBA today, than 30 years ago. Fact. The NBA is importing more and more European "white" players than ever before. Fact. The NBA finals was the least watched finals of any sport EVER. Fact.
So, you can live in your world, and I will live in mine.

Not sure if you're misinformed or just telling a brazen lie. But here are what we in the industry call facts. Last year was the most-watched NBA Finals since 1998.

I trust your opinion. Hopefully his ankle problems made it look worse than it is and/or he works on it. Kid is still young, and given Pike's focus on D I have to imagine he thinks he can develop. Length and body positioning, if well done, can make up for a lot on D.

People's opinion of Harper Jr. Exploded his senior year (I think you had something to do with that) so let's see where Mulcahy is in a year.

Thanks for always posting here!

Since Mulcahy has not even played yet in a college game and will not do so until a year and a half from now, it is just a bit premature to talk about him in the NBA.

ok, let's get on track here. @Russ Wood , (if you didn't know- seems like you didn't) ..what do you make of the comments about the banged up foot? Now hearing about that do you think it may have been impacting what you saw? (and no, I am not politicking for another star...I could care less). Couple folks have asked and I know at least a few of us would like you POV on that.

@Russ Wood what are the parameters for rankings? Is it universal things that all evaluators are grading? Is it partially the eye test? Do you take offers into consideration?

I’d imagine there aren’t many three stars with the offer list that Paul has especially with some big time programs like nova that we’re beginning to show interest.

The banged up foot info -- which I posted that I was almost hoping he had some kind of foot injury that affected him defensively in the games I watched -- gives me even more reason to watch him in July. Hopefully he is healthy and I can get a better evaluation of him before our next rankings update.

At this point in time, I feel that we have him appropriately ranked at No. 138 (he moved up to that spot) and at three-stars. We are a long way away from the final ranking of the 2019 class.

FWIW, I hated hoping that the kid had an injury while I was watching him, but that was the benefit of the doubt I was willing to give the kid. I was going to call his AAU coach and ask about an injury during the spring but with all of the kids Florida offered this week, Mulcahy kinda fell down my list of priorities.

I can only speak for myself, but I just evaluate what I see when I watch kids play and if I get a chance to see a skills workout. I factor in age if a kid is old (a few years ago we had a kid who was going to be 19 years, nine months old when he graduated HS) or young for his grade.

I do not take offers into consideration and here's why: I don't have the desire, nor the time, to look up the offers of all of the kids we are considering for the Rivals150. Fortunately I have access to programs where I can watch game video of kids that I have not seen in person. Other game video I get from HS or AAU coaches. I just do the best I can when evaluating kids. I'm not always right but I can sleep well at night because I know I approached each evaluation with the same mindset.

I hate that there is a perception among some, not anyone on this message board that I've noticed, that if a kid isn't in the Rivals150 that kid isn't any good. There are plenty of Division I prospects that have very good college careers who were not ranked.

I don't think our next update is until after July but, based on what I've seen so far this travel season, I cannot reccomend a fourth star for Mulcahy.

He needs so much improvement on defense.

I told Richard Schnyderite last night that at times I felt bad for Mulcahy when I was watching him play. He was getting abused. Guys were going right right past him and getting to the cup.

I was almost hoping the kid was playing on a sprained ankle, plantar fascitis or turf toe.

That's how much difficulty he had with his on ball defense.

The kid is definitely a very good playmaker though.
Not what the choir wanted to hear. :weary:

If there is anything an incoming recruit will learn here, its defense

we got a good player and Pike's top priority. Pike is now 2 for 3 in that department with recruiting (missing on Alvarado and hitting with Mathis and Mulcahy)

I think the team is going to be a lot of fun to watch this year. But it is only going to get more fun in the years to come. Let's enjoy this

Thank you for the thoughtful answer @Russ Wood !! I appreciate your opinion even more since you proved you’re not a homer with your statements on Mulcahy. I hope you’re very wrong but atleast im getting your honest opinion. Thanks again!

That is the norm for successful programs, and Rutgers is trying to become one of those. That doesn't mean that all players become good at it.

Florida has a kid, who I love to death, whose defense was a big-time liability at the beginning of last season. He got better as the season went along but his starting point was pretty low.

He was part of why the team's defensive defensive efficiency dropped from the previous season.

How did he look offensively, specificly as a PG in the games you saw?

I have only seen him in HS and it is very difficult to project anything I saw on to a B1G court (not saying this in a bad way, competition was so weak).

All I can say is I believe I saw him 8 times over the last two years and he can do an awful lot for his team. Often I think he is too unselfish in that he is always looking for his teammates.

He struggled, possibly due to the foot injury limiting his movement and affecting his jump shot. It was obvious, though, that he was a smart player with very good play making skills. He finds guys and creates scoring opportunities.

I don't really think he has a jump shot. More of a set shot, doesn't elevate any more than Corey does on his shot.

Did you see him play last year? I am really interested in his play outside of HS. I'd be concerned if he hasn't excelled outside of HS

In the clutch, when I assume he was under too much pressure to overthink it, Corey used to actually elevate and shoot a jumper on his threes, and it seemed like he had a much better stroke and was much more successful. Not sure who the heck had him shooting a set shot... looked awkward last year.
