Paul Mulcahy

recruiting rankings most of the time are absolutely useless. At Rutgers there has been very little to no correlation between rankings and 4 year performance.

Too much emphasis here on Paul’s lack of quickness and outside shot, imo. If he had those things to go along with everything else he’d be a 5 star one and done that goes to Duke.

His outside shot can be improved tremendously with practice (see Eugene for evidence of this) and his height will help him get shots off against smaller guards.

Also, anyone who’s been around great players knows that some just have “it” and manage to succeed despite their physical shortcomings. Mind over matter. Like the short guy that never gets his shot blocked and finds creative ways to score.

I may be remembering wrong but I don’t think Larry Bird was very fleet of foot, but his bb IQ, court vision, ball handling skills and decision-making quickness made him the ultimate team player and playmaker that made everyone else better.

No guarantees that Paul or any other recruit will perform the way we hope, but watching those videos and reading comments from those who’ve seen him in person, it appears he has a good chance to make us a significantly better team.

Billy, what’s the over/under on how long before you get bashed for the Bird comparison?

Recruiting rankings are a guide, but doesn't reflect whether the players fit the system, whether the players overlap at the same position or whether they can do more than one thing well.

Players like Shaq Doorson were 3 star or considered low 4* players out of HS....he was rarely healthy or able to get to a point to show what he can do.

We also had players ranked that did well like Corey Sanders, Myles Mack, Eli Carter and now Montez Mathis, Paul Mulcahy and Ron Harper in recent classes all landed in the Top 150 range by most services.

The question isnt where recruits are ranked, it's a little more detailed.

The question isnt whether Mulcahy will be a factor or not...the question is whether the player impacts a weakness of the roster or provides a strength to the roster. RU hasn't been a good passing team and we are looking for another guard that can make plays with the ball in his hands.

I just wouldn't overthink things here. RU will be a better program next year vs this year with Young and Mulcahy playing.

Recruiting hasn't really been the problem over the years. Rankings:

2005 - 43
2006 - 74
2007 - 50
2008 - 34
2009 - 232
2010 - 81
2011 - 18
2012 - 108
2013 - 100
2014 - 69
2015 - 42
2016 - 103
2017 - 63
2018 - 50

Pikiell hasn't given us a big upgrade in recruiting. The problem for over a decade has been a combination of inability to develop the talent being recruited, inability to keep players on campus, inability to foster a culture/lack of continuity, and some plain old bad luck.

13 of the past 14 years we've been in the top 110 of recruiting rankings. Just three times we've been in the top 110 according to KenPom.

and most of these years they are in the bottom of the conference....fact is Pikiell has a staff that we never had before and he has landed some solid recruits and hidden gem...Baker 414 yet arguably our best player...come on.

everyone knows the recruiting has to improve to make the NCAA tourney but geez I dont know how any of you thought RU is going to start landing top 50 players given the absolutely horror show perception of the program before Pikiell was hired. Program was a laughingstock everywhere and the institutional support was a big issue. Now Pike has a punchers chance. I think all of you (this post isnt really intended for you but others) need to calm down

I believe this program gets built on players like Baker, Mulcahy and Harper where fans say (never me) players are too slow, not rated high enough, need to work on defense, and not high level athletes OVER paper tiger ratings where players have immense abilities, but for whatever reasons don't translate in to Ws. Other programs see that and that is why they end up at RU

We need to know where we stand on the NCAA totem pole and recruit accordingly. I trust we have the right staff. there will be some whiffs, but let's not hope we have too many of them.

I'm just warning everything set proper expectations for Jacob Young. Some think he's like gonna be some savior/instant offense type of guy. The guy is a very very poor mans nigel johnson.

I would disagree. Young seems like a kid committed to playing for the program. He is a high effort player who will look to improve his shot, and shot selection in his redshirt year.

That's pretty freaking broke...

There is no savior on this roster. But we need Young to be good next year.

Young was rated well above Nigel and had a few standout performances at a program rated well above what Nigel played for prior to Virginia (when he was a 5th year senior). You're characterization seems exaggerated at best

You don't think he will be improved 2 years after his freshman year? I think we all expect Harper Mathis Myles to be much improved next season or by the end of this season even. Young had some big games late. He may have needed some time to adjust and from what I see on social media he seems very team oriented and seems to be close with the team. I think he may have took his speed for granted coming in a freshman and now he realizes he needs to work.

This poor poor man's Nigel Johnson comment may just come back to haunt you kyk and you know there will be people who bring it up every single thread if he ends up being a stud... Or even just good now

Id LOVE to be wrong trust me. Id LOVE to. I have no problem being wrong just as theres no bigger fan of Eugene than I despite me thinking he had no business on a d1 bball court as a freshman.

Im friends with texas alums and bball fans and they basically laughed when i asked them about jacob young

If this is true, it certainly lowered my expectations. Nigel was a big underachiever IMO. A very very poor version of him might not even make the team.

It’s not true. Luke like to make extreme posts. Young is not a savior nor is he what kyk describes. He will give us speed at the point. Allow geo to play the two. He will defend smaller quicker guards. Will get hot some games as well.

Nigel Johnson sophomore at KSU:

102.3 ORtg
89.9 ORtg in the Big 12
45% on two-pointers
34% on three-pointers
55 assists, 32 turnovers

Jacob Young sophomore at Texas:

103.2 ORtg
98.9 ORtg in the Big 12
52% on two-pointers
32% on three-pointers
23 assists, 19 turnovers

Young had a really brutal freshman year which probably sticks in the mind of the Texas fans kyk talks to. But his sophomore year was fine and the family and recruiting pedigree are encouraging.

There's nothing in his numbers to indicate he'll be a star, but there was also nothing about James Palmer's time at Miami or Isaac Copeland's time at Georgetown to make you think that, and now they're anchoring a top-25 team at Nebraska. At the very least he should be a solid contributor.

Any analysis of Nigel Johnson looking at statistics is silly. No need to compare Sophomore Johnson and Sophomore Young and try to convince yourself Young is better. If Young is coachable, plays hard every possession, and is on the same page of his teammates things will be fine. I have to say i am interested to see where he and Mulcahy fit with the guys we have. Anyone who thinks they know how it will play out is silly.

You guys get sucked in by this every time. As RickB113 said, he just likes to make outrageous statements.

Not sucked in. Was kind of said sarcastically to highlight how ridiculous it was. I’ve seen Young play, and while I don’t expect Much more than a solid rotation player, a “very very poor Nigel Johnson” is a high school player.

you realize Jacob Young is not a true point guard right? He's an undersized 2.

You could land top 100 players immediately by hiring a bigger name coach or a coach with connections. We chose not to go that route which is fine and credibly a viable strategy. It’s not the only strategy though. It’s behind us now though.

We should be able to recruit top 100 players in year 4 with what is actually going to be.a best in class facility. Not the nonsense people spout when they think football has great facilities. Praying we move up the ladder in 2020 the resources are in place.
