Penn State at home vs Butler

PSU will be a tough out this season. Shrewsberry had them playing tough late last season. Not crazy talented, Pickett can score Myles Dread has been there for a billion years and Seth Lundy can challenge Caleb for DPOY. They are physical and their style of play really reminds me of RU

RU vs Pen St are pickem games

Solid program but not a team that is a big draw when they play on the road.
We'd absolutely sell out for Butler.

And Penn State last night had about 6 rows of students on either side of the court and then what looked like a few hundred regular fans behind them. Behind both baskets was empty. They're 100% football

Their announced attendance was 6,700

Like I said, not much difference in their actual attendance compared to RU’s o n a Monday night if butler came to the RAC

Again the grass is always greener to some fans. Did they forget that the PSU coach last year said he wished they had the environment like RU and were aspiring to be like RU.

I think 5K in that building looks and sounds sparse. 5K in the RAC can still sound loud. Not that we have that problem these days!
Yeah, that's the main thing at that mausoleum of an arena - it's so cavernous that there's almost never an "atmosphere," especially when they only draw 4,000 fans.

But, yeah, PSU is going to be a real PITA this year. They can defend and they can shoot.

Bart says -1.5 at The library and -5.5 at RAC
Who guards Cliff? Here's the PSU starting lineup from the Butler victory.

Seth Lundy, 6' 6", 220 lbs (heights and weights from the PSU website's official roster)
Caleb Dorsey, 6' 7", 235 lbs
Andrew Funk, 6' 5", 200 lbs
Camren Wynter, 6' 2", 200 lbs
Jalen Pickett, 6' 4", 209 lbs

Off their bench:
Myles Dread, 6' 4", 235 lbs
Kebba Njie, 6' 10", 237 lbs (freshman)
Dallion Johnson, 6' 3", 180 lbs

Looks like Dorsey is the only starter with a prayer of covering Cliff down low, and he's giving up 4". That's a tall order. If Cliff stays out of foul trouble, I think we comfortably beat PSU this year unless they have someone get HOT from long range.

We haven't been offensively efficient playing 3 teams that are even smaller. If PSU puts strong on ball pressure on our perimeter defenders it makes it very difficult to get tha ball in the right spot for Cliff.

One thing that we haven't really seen much of is high pick and roll with Cliff.

As always when there is a mismatch we need to look at the other side of the court. Who does Cliff defend?

Being we've sold out UMass-Lowell, Coppin State, Columbia, Sacred Heart and Rider, I am quite confident we would have a crowd for Butler.

Good win for PSU. I always root for B1G in OOC games. Shrewsbury (A Matt Painter disciple) is a good HC.

The UMass -Lowell wan't close to a sellout .There were empty seats in the student section and in all sections of the 300 level. Perhaps, more seats were sold but fans didn't show up.

Recall that Bryce Jordan Center is a 15,261-seat multi-purpose arena which is almost twice the capacity of the RAC so I guess it may look empty from certain camera angles.

As always when there is a mismatch we need to look at the other side of the court. Who does Cliff defend?
Dorsey. Cliff is fairly quick for his size, and with his length he should be able to lay a little off Dorsey and still contest outside shots, if Dorsey wants to play on the perimeter. Dorsey is 6th on PSU right now in scoring average. If they want to rework their offense to focus on using him to attach Omoruyi on defense from the perimeter, go for it.

Or we go zone at stretches.

Keep in mind our offense was hampered last game by a banged-up Mulcahy and we're still without Caleb. I expect our efficiency against UMass-Lowell would've been much higher with a healthy PM running the show. I'm assuming we'll have him healthy when we play PSU on Jan 24 and Feb 26.

We are also currently #12 in the AdjD metric on kenpom without the reigning DPOY. If we get a healthy Caleb back, that figures to stay a team strength.

Our offense wasn’t great, from a raw stats standpoint, for the 1st 2 games. I need to see a decent ‘22-‘23 sample size to conclude we are better offensively with Caleb. Everything I have seen in his career tells me the opposite. Obviously he is a huge difference maker in defense and defensive rebounding. His contributions will be essential once the competition improves.
