Per source: Drew mehringer out as OC

I feel in the end, this is the best opportunity to regenerate some hype for the program. With that said, it's hard for me to see the fault for offensive production falls squarely on DM. For those that feel he wasn't a good fit, how do we know we are not gonna say the offense will look exactly the same next year? How do we know how much freedom DM had because Ash has gone on record multiple times defending the scheme despite the players not being a good fit. I'm under the impression he had a pretty short leash. Despite stats, the scheme was far from vanilla and if you need a reminder what vanilla looks like then look at some film from when fudd was co-oc.

Watch for Brian Wright, OC at Toledo.
Here's why:
Coached for 3 years as OC under Charlie Partridge at FAU, although Charlie fired him.
Charlie is Ash's buddy.
Wright's offense at Toledo was #4 in Nation.
http://utrockets.com/coaches.aspx?rc=195&path=football
Wright undertook the task of converting FAU to an up-tempo attack as opposed to the pro-style which had been the Owls’ mainstay. FAU made significant improvements in all major offensive categories from the previous season, including total offense and points scored.

Geez he was in to recruit my nephew last week who is a 2018 QB in Ohio , lol.

EVERYONE IS SAYING FOLLOW THIS..THROWING OUT NAMES...Ash is going to hire someone from the OSU..Iowa tree that has a connection to himself and staff.and RU is NOT changing the offense..so it has to be an OC who has run this type power spread.

You're right, I don't, I'm just putting everything together. See my post above about what Strong's WR and TE coaches were both earning.

I think more information will be coming out in the near future on why the move was made.

However, I think Drew leaving may turn out to be beneficial for Rutgers.

Ash now has the opportunity to pick a new OC with additional experience.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Look for the name Todd Fitch.
Currently runs the spread under Skip Holtz at Louisiana Tech. Previously OC for a year at BC. He and Ash worked together at Iowa State 2004-06. His offense was #8 in nation for total offense and #5 in scorinoffense. Seasoned. 51 years old
Looks like you've found another interesting and realistic option.

Per Bruce Feldman:

SOURCE: #Rutgers OC Drew Mehringer is re-joining Tom Herman. Will be #Texas new passing game coordinator. Rivals was 1st to report the hire.

who care what job Drew took..hes gone..and RU has a great chance to be better in long run now. what they do with this chance is a big move for ASH long term how things work out

Damn - 40 percent completion rate. Drew was a bit inaccurate

I did not see this coming. I am 100% sure he left on his own accord to advance his career. It is much easier to turn Texas around with their tradition and self recruiting and he will probably become OC in the near future.

I really wanna know why he left to go be a position coach. I know he's worked with Herman but confuses me

Maybe he realized he was over his head as OC at his young age and limited experience and is putting in more work to get there later.

What kind of spread?

Pretty sure Mehringer had a 2 year contract., I don't think Ash had to let him leave. Sounds like Ash wanted him gone OR both felt it was a good move.

It seems Rutgers has the lowest assistant coach salary pool in the Big 10 and it is half the size of Ohio St. $450k for an offensive coordinator is not that much, but Rutger's had a young OC with limited experience, so the pay seems appropriate. It sounds like he needs more seasoning and going to Texas is the best option for all involved. Good luck with your search as I'd love to see you guys beat Ohio St and Michigan!

Does an awful job and flees. Nice! So loyal to Ash who gave him the biggest break of all time. I would have rather Ash demote him as he did seem like a good recruiter but don't let the door hit him on the way out.

Bad hire from day one. Lot of people on this board have some significant apologizing to do and crow to eat.

Hope Ash brings someone with real D1 experience, ala, The Fridge.

Maybe he and Ash realized he wasn't ready and they found a mutual solution.

this....he can take a lesser job without the pressure to work his rep back up again rather than take the risk if he fails here another year he possibly would be canned and labeled poison. This move to me shows for whatever reason the kid is not ready, never should have been hired here. Ash has the opportunity now to go out and hire someone qualified with experience and hopefully Hobbs steps up to the plate with a check so he can do that.

This is not a loss for RU

I keep harping on this, but we had the worst offense in all of D1 by something like 20 yards a game

There is no excuse for such an abysmal performance - none.

His performance won't be hard to replicate

Was just about to post the same thing. He was under contract, Ash could dictate when he leaves, but basically by letting him go now said good riddance. I think this was a mutual parting, maybe some nudging as Ash now gets to fix his mistake.

Yeah uhm this is NOT a "crow-eating" scenario. He left for Texas, didn't get fired, big differences.
Guy was pushed out. He had a 2 year contract so Ash held all of the cards as to when he was gonna let him leave. Leaving like this leads to only one conclusion - he was unwelcomed.

Looks like somebody's angling for a finders fee...

Guys it's pretty simple. If Ash didn't want him back the replacement will be announced VERY shortly. You don't let the announcement of a guy taking a demotion to leave you happen without having the response ready to go. (FYI I'm just leaving the Eagles game so I don't know how long this has been out so hopefully no news yet doesn't mean we're screwed).

Also, anything from Lewis since this came out?

Could you be right, sure, but as of now it's nothing more than an assumption. Like Sojo just said let's see if there's someone waiting in the wings.

I don't think a contract gives Ash the power to retain an employee, does it? If Mehringer was being nudged out I would think that it would happen after the recruiting process and not risk losing the new recruits.

The only way this is bad is if he left on his own accord, because Ash disturbingly gave him a vote of confidence after the pitiful year he had. I hope he was nudged along by Ash knowing the kid was in way over his head, and the vote of confidence was nothing more than coach speak. This is a great opportunity to right a wrong. Long-term couldn't be better.

Assistant coaches leave all the time, with time on their contracts.

I think that Texas bought out Mehringer's contract, that Herman wants to do the same magic with Mehringer at Texas that they did at Huston.

This one makes a lot of sense (and I expect Partridge may come on board in some capacity as well).
Interesting back story on Brian Wright , which as some familiar elements (Seems Partridge did not want to run a spread offense, and did not recruit dual thread QBs. Wright lost his dual threat QB to injury in the year he was fired, and then went on to Toledo where he lit it up):
http://www.fauowlaccess.com/articles/340/fau-fires-oc-brian-wright.aspx
An injury to starting quarterback Quez Johnson suffered in the second game of the season lingered throughout the year, rendering the dual-threat significantly less of a threat to run. His accuracy also suffered.

Many observers, including some members of the FAU athletic administration, also questioned Wright's play calling, especially in the red zone.

http://www.underdogdynasty.com/2015/12/7/9865062/fau-fires-brian-wright

Wright came to FAU from Montana State where he first served as their offensive coordinator for two season before being awarded the same position under former head coach Carl Pelini in 2011.

After watching Howard Schnellenberger's pro-style offense run out of favor with the Owl faithful Wright's spread-offense was a breath of fresh air.
After finishing the season with FAU's first four-game winning streak since 2008, Wright was strongly considered to be given the full-time head coaching job by athletic director Pat Chun but rather than promote from within, Chun elected to go with an outside hire and give the head coaching job to Charlie Partridge.

Partridge decided to retain Brian Wright as offensive coordinator to begin the 2014 season but after averaging 26.4 points per game in 2014, the Owls' offense failed to get any better this season despite the return of seniors Jaquez Johnson and Jenson Stoshak.
