Per source: Drew mehringer out as OC

I always figured he'd go back to the Texas/Oklahoma area but not sure it would be as a WR coach, thought it could be as OC somewhere if he was successful here.

Whether he was encouraged or not who knows. But think of if this way. He's got to stand on his own 2 feet here and quick or he'll tarnish his reputation if his numbers didn't improve quickly from last year. In Texas, he's got cover from Herman, he's back home and will have more time to learn and adjust and still have his career on an upward trajectory. It's probably a pay cut but Texas has a nice budget so he'll probably be compensated nicely and his career ambitions won't be hurt while he's under the umbrella of Herman for the time being.

In the end it doesn't matter, if he's not here he's not here we move on and hopefully find someone good.
To was never so discouraged with our offense...good luck at UT...you had nothing here??

Giving up an OC position at a P5 program for an up and coming HC to become a position coach speaks volumes.

Follow the money (OC vs WR) and draw your own conclusions.

Will Rutgers stay with the spread offense concept or will the new OC modify the offensive strategy with Ash approval.

Interesting

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
Not too sidetrack too much but saw that Matt Canada is a candidate for the LSU OC spot under Orgeron.

I dropped some hints on here a few days ago..I didnt know this move was happening 100% just that the 'situation' wasnt the best after a few player 'moves' during the season.
This is for the long term best people..it just wasnt a fit.
now..RU cant screw this up..our last two OCs were "up and coming wonder kids" and neither worked out..

time TO HIRE A PROVEN FIVE PROVEN POWER FIVE OC,OR AN EX HEAD COACH WITH A OFFENSE BACKGROUND.
Yeah I was the one calling you out on it. Mea culpa.
Guys it's pretty simple. If Ash didn't want him back the replacement will be announced VERY shortly. You don't let the announcement of a guy taking a demotion to leave you happen without having the response ready to go. (FYI I'm just leaving the Eagles game so I don't know how long this has been out so hopefully no news yet doesn't mean we're screwed).

Also, anything from Lewis since this came out?

The only worry is Lewis and Melton ..but Ru alledgedly assured the recruits that the offense will remain the same.

Hopefully these guys are still on board. As others said, be careful what you wish for.

Mehringer was a good recruiter and the kids really seemed to like him. He was not a good offensive coordinator. However, we need to find someone who could run the power spread and run it effectively. I don't know why Mehringer would leave being a position coach, to an offensive coordinator, to go back to being a position coach. Unless Texas paid him substantially more money. Which could easily be the case. Either that or he was pushed out.
Even with the lack of talent, the worst O.C. In RU football history. Under qualified, overpaid and 100% predictable (probably voted for Hillary)

This is a good thing for RU. He was a lousy play caller and in over his head against the more experienced defensive coordinators in the Big 10. Now we just need to get rid of the special teams coach. Baffled as to why Herman would want him back.

This was rumored for the last few days.

So far some of the 4 stars have already tweeted that they are still committed.

He was a great recruiter but maybe not quite ready to be OC. He should do well at Texas.

Good luck to him.

Now we have to see who will replace him.
f-him
He was given a chance to be an OC at a P-5 program then ran like a scared rabbit back to his hole when things started looking tough.
Hopefully the commits won't think Mehringer's run rabbit run move is saying the RU briar patch needs too much fixing and not worth his trying to help fix it.

All I can say is Ash made some serious mistakes when he thought this rabbit would be good for Rutgers.
He created an offense that was offensive in the wrong way. He put in a system that none of the QBs on roster could succeed in. He stuck with a QB to long and now instead of working with the returning roster and freshmen coming in, Drew turns tail and runs back to his mentor just like a scared rabbit runs for his hole when he sees trouble.

.

lol he's going to run the entire pass-side O at Texas for crying out loud! How on Earth is that "ran like a scared rabbit back into his hole"? You're acting like he's going to Bowling Green to be a QB's coach.

My Lord people I really have to shake my head at times.

We were statistically the worst offense in D1 yards per game

I think we can replace him

Drew simply wasn't ready to be an OC
That is a good point, but I still feel Drew has hurt Rutgers in the eyes of some of the recruits ( just my opinion) and going to make it easier for another program to flip them
along with being overwhelmed as the RU OC hurt the football team's ability to be more competitive last season.
Might be best for all he's leaving, but that don't excuse his giving up on the RU FB program and trying to finish what he started.

If Ash push him out all's well and my rant was wrong, Ash deserve to be the one taken to task for hiring someone not ready for prime time without anyone on staff capable of helping him make the O better.
If Ash had O background then hiring a novice would be more acceptable.
But Ash was a novice himself and needed to hire an experienced hand as the RU OC.
Either way, this Rabbit leaving just proves Ash made a serious error in judgement when he thought Mehringer would make a good OC and hired him .

Why do our posters INSIST on MAKING SHIT UP all the time?

Scoring - NOT "dead last" 127th out of 128
Total O - 128th
Rushing - 104th
Passing - 122nd

...should I go on? Still sucks, don't get me wrong, but you CAN look these things up ya' know! [cheers]

you are kidding me with this right...whether its last or not even if the poster said it was it does not chance how TERRIBLE the offense was, you are arguing minutae

Spin it anyway you want, but he left a P-5 OC position for a lesser role because getting it done at RU seemed to hard to do after failing last year to make RU's O look like it would be competitive under him.
Ash made a mistake in hiring someone not ready for prime time and now that coach is running back to the safety of his mentor's embrace .
This move probably is best for all , but it shows Ash needs to hire better help if RU will improve under his watch..

Did I say that? No, not at all, even said "still sucks" in the post lol! The guy posted a flat-out lie in an attempt to make his point. I always have, and always will, refute such nonsense, with FACTS, on these boards. No need to make shit up IMHO.

Not sure how it's a "spin." He was OC at Rutgers. He's now Passing Offense Coordinator, aka "Co-OC," at freakin' Texas. Fact. Don't know how you turn THAT into what you did. It's not like we were some kind of offensive juggernaut, let alone college football one, prior to him coming here. The move makes sense, for him, to me. Your comment just seemed really odd and, to be honest, 100% unnecessary to me. Oh well.

I think I agree with this. If only Letterman was here.

To be clear regarding his title he is not Co-OC. Guys get these Passing game/running game coordinator roles all the time and they are more for respect than anything else. Most coaches who move after a period of limited success get given this extra title. It's how football works.

He went p-5 to a p-5 position w/ less responsibility. Now after seeing his new compensation, which will likely be very nice per Nuts research, he may not be making that much less relative to the decrease in his responsibility.

He is a big boy who has his own career to think of.
Giving up an OC position for a WR position is a regression.

Not a good move for resume enhancement for future job opportunities.

Now did he take a Salary Reduction to be with his Good Friend.

Follow the money.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Maybe he just wanted out of this mess at any price

All I can say is Ash made some serious mistakes when he thought this rabbit would be good for Rutgers.

In 2007 Nick Saban named 29 year old Major Applewhite his OC at Alabama. He left after one year to become the RB coach at Texas. Maybe Mehringer spoke to Applewhite and realized he wasn't ready to be an OC and decided to take a step back and learn from one of the top offensive minds at Texas. It seemed to work out ok for Applewhite.

Dunleavy is being douchey:
'After one season presiding over a Rutgers offense ranked at or near the bottom of the nation in most major categories, Drew Mehringer is getting a promotion."
Pass game coordinator is a promotion?

"It is a huge blow to Rutgers, which will be left looking for its eighth offensive coordinator in the last eight years under three head coaches."

Really? I see it as a huge chance for a huge upgrade.

Guy posts a factually incorrect statement. Other guy lists the correct facts while agreeing in principal with the point the first guy was trying to make.

And you condemn the posting of the actually correct facts?

WTF? Do facts just not matter to you?

it's "principle". I hate correcting grammar, but principle/principle and counsel/council are pet peeves. No hookers or blow for you tonight.

I would have given him another year to see what he could do before getting concerned about his epic lack of results this season with what he had, but there is nothing now that will make me concerned about him leaving.

Gio had a rushing TD on his first play of game 2, and didn't see the field again until game 7. I wish him luck, but enthusiasm and a quick twitter finger alone does not cut it.
