Vince Okruch. C'mon Dr. Kraft - pull the trigger. You can hire him on the cheap for $125k. He comes with decades of experience and even had a position on Buckeyes staff recently. He will blow your mind when it comes to his vision for Special Teams.

Remember when Psu's Franklin couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag? Or when Belechick was a train wreck in Cleveland? We have good coaches...But they're not miracle workers either....

maybe they need and up and coming guy..Drew Meherringer.:sunglasses:

Given Mehringer's reputation I have seem him from the start as R head coach replacement should Ash leave or be fired. The problem is (I think) that Mehringer doesn't have the dogs to work with yet so I'm not so sure his work at RU can be evaluated. To me Mehringer, given career success, will be on to much "bigger and better things"

Don't blast me but has Schiano's name come up? Would be a better fit than most. I can't see why a top team with top resources would hire him. Hate to say it but arguably the football PROGRAM is on par if not better than Rutgers (at least the last couple of years).

Schiano may be too expensive for Temple. Rhule earned about $1.5 mil. Schaino would probably demand north of $2.5 mil. At Ohio St with bonuses he probably makes north of $1 mil now ($600k base). If it is a fit at Ohio St where he works well with Meyer he may be willing to sign a 2 year deal for $1-1.5 mil a year as associate head heach. As an asst he will have less pressure than the head coach and at Ohio St you are pretty much guaranteed 8 to 9 wins a year just based on talent so the only pressure is making the playoffs each year. This also allows him to pick and choose which head coach job he wants.

Here is an article highlighting Schiano's 1 year deal with Ohio St:

If you're Schiano, do you really consider a non P5 school?

I don't think Schiano can pick and choose what head coaching job he wants. Definitely not with a P5 who have significant resources. Gven the money he made with Tampa Bay and Rutgers he CAN likely pick and choose many jobs (assuming Christy Schiano is happy and I'm sure they kept their Florida beach house). BTW heard from a Bucknell parent that Schianos one son is at Bucknell.

Mehringer is our best recruiter nearly all of the top players on offense in the 2017 were recruited by him. It would set this program into an even deeper hole if he leaves. Since they would most likely all decommit.

Boy, you really need to look at the big picture.

If Ohio St beats Alabama with a huge defensive game he may have his choice of schools with openings. Or he may wait till next year when more schools are looking. If for some reason PSU's Franklin bolts to the NFL next year after another good season Schiano may be a replacement.

I agree. 2006 was a long time ago and Tampa Bay was a massive failure on every level.

For him to get a Power 5 HC job, he has to show people that he still has it. Helping OSU win another NC will go a long way in doing just that. It will allow him to get hot again and urban will recommend him and he will be back. If OSU gets blown out... then he will have to stick around for longer.

Not sure what's funnier, the idea that Franklin has gone from being awful and on the verge of being fired to an NFL candidate, or the thought that Schiano will ever be the coach at Penn State. By the way, I don't think there's any question Moorhead isn't long for Penn State - he's too bright of a mind not to become a HC eventually - but he's not going to a program like Temple.

Moorhead might take the Owl position if he thought it would lead to a P-5 job faster than if he stayed at Penn St next season..
But I think staying would be a faster path and if 2017 turns out like 2016, he'll be a P-5 HC in 2018

Schiano might have been in the mix and a top contender more than likely hired by Penn St after the 2006 season (maybe after the 2007 season as well) , but from 2008 on he wouldn't have been.
I look at 2006 as a magical season, but 2 of the last 3 conference games weren't .
So if Penn St fans claim Schiano never would be in the mix just after the 2006 season, I could understand how 2006 ended might be the reason they think Greg wouldn't be a popular choice.

Franklin proved better than thought and I was one of the ones knocking his ability.
Moorhead might have helped change that, but the HC gets called out when things don't turn out as expectd , so must get credit when the season turns out better than
people ( like me) thought it would.
Now you can stop whining about what was said on another school's message board about the Penn St HC.
Damm, it seems like some Nits can't stop whining about every little slight they feel was posted about their precious little HC (real or imaginary) :chairshot:

Would Temple pay more than Penn State?

As it relates to Franklin, no whining here. I just enjoy watching fans ride the overreaction roller-coaster. Franklin sucks! He's going to be fired! Franklin's great! Maybe he'll leave for the NFL! James Franklin isn't an NFL coach. His act wouldn't play in a pro locker room.

Is Moorhead making over $1.5 million a year.
Rhule was making that before his contract was extended in 2015 after 2 years on the job.
Don't think it's money as much as a quicker path to a P-5 HC position that will keep Moorhead at Penn St rather than take the Temple HC position if offered.
I wouldn't be surprised if a Temple representative reached out, unofficially, to Moorhead's agent and was told he wasn't interested.

You asked would Temple pay more than Penn St : does that mean as HC ( replacing Franklin) or what Moorhead is making as the Nit's OC?
If it's OC,what is he making since you seem to be implying it might be more than Temple pays it's HC.
Or do you feel Franklin is going to bolt the Nits for greener pastures ( soon) and Moorhead would be replacing him:p

I don't know what Penn State is paying Moorhead currently. Based on the available info on salaries of coaches in similar roles around the B1G, I'd guess he's making something in the neighborhood of $600,000-$700,000. What I do know, though, is that Penn State recently gave Bob Shoop an extension that paid him around $1 million annually.

PSU's entire staff is about to receive a nice raise as it is. I don't think they'd let Moorhead leave for Temple because of a few hundred grand. If he just wants any head coaching job, that's one thing, but PSU can pay him just as much as an OC. Personally, I think Moorhead waits for the right P5 opportunity. Pitt is the one that makes me nervous.

This is, of course, also ignoring the fact that Moorhead would be insane to leave his current situation for a G5 job. Penn State brings back virtually everyone next season and will enter the season ranked in the top 10, maybe the top five. With another year to refine this system, and another year of growth on the offensive line, the 2017 offense should be ridiculous, and Moorhead's resume will only improve.

I think Moorhead would be a good choice for Temple. Successful experience at Fordham, now a little bit of a coordinator track record in the P5 on top of his time at UConn.

I don't think a G5 job would necessarily be discouraging to him or insane. If he's already in contact then he obviously doesn't feel that way. Herman did it, Frost did it, Morris did it and many other top coordinators along the way have done it. It's a great proving ground into the P5 as a whole and possibly even the top P5 names. He's 43 so plenty of time left in his career.

If I'm Morehead, I don't take the Temple job. He would be much better off sticking at PSU for one more year. He has a great chance to have a "GREAT" offense next year. McSorley looks like he could be that type of QB that elevates an offense to elite status. Plus, he has some incredibly talented kids coming back next year. If this happens, he has his pick of P5 schools after that.

I don't think you can automatically assume that. Herman won a national championship using 3 different qbs and he ended up at Houston. P5 school maybe because coordinators are hired all the time and they can be good too but just because he cranks out a great offense don't assume that all schools will be fawning over him. Dan Mullen ended up at Miss. St. after being a national championship OC and coaching lots of great college qbs.

Can Moorhead get a P5 job next year? It's a definite possibility but I won't assume it will be the pick of the litter. I think he can increase his chances if he can continue on what Rhule did at Temple. I don't know who they have to replace PJ Walker and if Phil Snow will remain so that could be an issue but just taking a G5 job in general for a top coordinator isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Haters are going to hate but how about you try supporting our coaching staff your part of the culture that needs to be changed....CONGRATS!!

Although he doesnt want to, I say yes to very few... but not Temple.

Why not Temple?

They are finally showing the football program some support. They are as committed to it as their resources will let them be (same would be true for any school). It's not a coaching graveyard if the coach is successful; and Rhule just accomplished what Al Golden didn't do in a weaker conference: back-to-back division titles, back to back 10 win seasons and a conference championship. The American is the top G5 conference; Temple is one of the schools that actually drives the value of the conference's TV contract. It's a good spot for him to prove that he's a college coach and that his results at Tampa Bay were an abberation. There might be some drop-off in talent at Temple (but that was the common thought last year at this time too).

This isn't the Ron Dickerson years at Temple where 500 people showed up at the Vet.

Here's what makes the Temple job attractive: the new coach, unless he completely screws the pooch, will win right away. There is so much talent in the lower classes who Rhule slowly brought into the mix this year, but in limited roles, who will develop into studs. The Rhule staff were masterful player development guys, as you see with Matakevich, Dion Dawkins, and Haason Redddick, who all arrived as zero- and one-star kids (Reddick was a walk-on), and became all-conference or All-American players. The bigger recruits of the past few years, like Kareem Ali, Aaron Ruff, and Karamo Dioubate, have hardly played. They haven't had to, because the older players above them have all been developed into good players who can start and excel. But meanwhile, these kids have been learning the game, getting bigger, stronger, and faster, and have also excelled when they've played (Ruff, not so much). So there is plenty of talent who have been conditioned to work hard awaiting the next coach.

If you're Schiano, do you really consider a non P5 school?
Would you rather take a temple where winning is doable (and the last 4 coaches all got good p5 jobs) OR go to a bottom of conference school where winning is doing be a struggle.

Temple has been talking to Charlie Strong.

I can confirm this. They are trying to get Strong. Also, Rhule was paid $2mm last year, and the word is they are willing to pay that to the replacement right out of the gate. I am not sure if they are willing to go higher than that or not.
