This season so far has reflected a perfect storm of multiple years of poor recruiting for a power five team, poor coaching, particularly on offense, and subpar performance even for the non-power five level players that make up the bulk of our team. That stretch in the first half last night where they missed about 10 or 11 shots in a row, almost none of which were from particularly long range and several of which were fairly wide-open, would have been considered abysmal for any division one program let alone a B1G team.

As I said in a prior post, an historically weak recruiter does not all of a sudden become a good recruiter. Tom Young was a perfect example of that. If we were a program with money, our coach would be fired after this year simply because of the unbelievably poor recruiting class coming in in 2022 despite having such successful years in 2020 and 2021. If he couldn’t recruit after those years and all the great publicity we received and his Phelan national coach of the year honor and having the most exciting venue in all of college basketball, it will never happen. And on top of that, we now see that he and his staff are simply poor game time coaches as well.

Our coach got lucky the last couple years that an under-recruited team performed extremely well, almost magically so. That type of thing doesn’t continue indefinitely even with a top coach (which we now see we really don’t have) and we now see that the emperor has no clothes. Remember, if you look at his record at Stony Brook, in a weak division one conference, it wasn’t particularly impressive.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe Rutgers has the money to fire the coach until his contract runs out in a couple years

They won’t fire him regardless but this money thing is ridiculous. If you want to play with the big boys, you have to act like them. I realize we aren’t/weren’t getting a full share of B1G payouts but we’ve been in the league a while now. If we keep going on the cheap, we get what we pay for.

The basketball program is big time in being a member of the Big Ten and having a new practice facility. Its small time playing in a outdated RAC and having the perception needed to attract top tier recruits and a coaching staff capable of achieving sustained success.
