Pike is just an idiot.

Wasn't he out of timeouts?

JWill had a WIDE OPEN three attempt there. You take your chance on that almost every time, unless its Ogbole taking it. We'd already seen Harper keep it, JWill's attempt was closer.
Sorry, you have to get better than that.

Best case is he follows Jay Wright, Jimmy Larranaga, and Coach K and realizes the game has passed him by and retires.

Otherwise Pike is ours until 2030 as I don’t see us buying out his insanely outsized contract.

The big question is will he wallow in failure until he extracts every dollar he can from RU or does his pride lead him to retirement.
Of course we will. We’re Rutgers.

Hopefully after we go 12-19 next year , the school and Pike reach some type of settlement.

Last 3 years ( after Mag injury) have been disasters - and getting worse by the year !

Can’t wait for the off season and see the gems we pick up from the portal !

Understand they’re thinking Dylan ISO and run some sneaky off ball action to get someone free in the post. Or maybe a back door cut setup for when they’re ball watching Dylan on the opposite side?

I really don’t think that’s high level stuff. That’s just being a HC and understanding the moment, and giving your team a chance to win.
This was wide open too. Jeremiah’s man was 10-15 feet away with his back to him helping on Dylan. He had a ridiculous amount of space to cut and just stayed behind the arc because we never draw anything up in these situations.

The only players that would play for this ****ing idiot next year will make Derkack look like Jerry West

Harper didn’t demand the ball late when they were looking to foul. JWill isn’t a winning player but at least he demands the ball
JWill doesn’t demand it… he just doesn’t give it up….he hogs it

This is not to say he is good or bad, but watching his antics on the sideline is beginning to sicken my stomach.

This was a coaching loss. I agree with Bac — UsC couldn’t believe they blew this game and were ready to pack it in. And then we got in the way.
I don’t know, players mostly lost this game(JWill, Harper not taking last shot, and Bailey with a few dumb fouls), but Pike lost the entire season putting this horrid roster together around the two studs.

We probably win 17-18 games next season, just enough to get us into the NIT, and save Pike’s job, just like Rutgers.

I've stayed mostly neutral on Pike's coaching this year but this last game tipped the scale for me. There were some ridiculous boneheaded coaching decisions that likelly cost us this game as discussed in this and many other threads (including the game thread). Not designing plays against their press to avoid JWill handling the ball, and of course not calling a TO to set-up running hard screens on the last possession in first OT to get Dylan downhill for his own shot, or a dump off to Sommerville or Acuff as the 3 pt shot option was coaching malpractice. There also was a possession late in the game where we had an inbounds play with about 7-8 seconds left on the shot clock and Pike pulled Sommerville to bring in Ogbole, maybe R worst offensive player in a tight game with a tight shot clock. I couldn't believe it, and of course Ogbole fumbled a pass, we started flailing and never got a shot off in a huge wasted possession.

I'm just stunned how poorly Pike coached this game.

The entire coaching staff stinks! This year has been a total disaster.
Coaching goes far beyond X’s and O’s. Pike and staff are clueless.

Minnesota timeout was a completely different situation .. there, playing on was the correct call with only 8 seconds left & the ball in backcourt.. With 20 seconds, you can set up various options with a timeout. Instead we went iso for 15 seconds with star who somehow got cold feet on shooting or going to basket, due to earlier air all on potential game winner, & passed to mediocre outside shooter for desperation 3..

How about Pikell not pulling Bailey after second foul 1st half, or when Bailey got his fourth foul with 5+ minutes left in 2nd half. Coaching malpractice. Joke. Pathetic. Resign.
This is disagree with and so does all available data. With that said, he made his fair share of mistakes. This wasnt one of them though.

Hes got at least another 2 seasons. His contract that hobbs idiotically gave him is effectively a poison pill

Ehhhh they call a timeout they’re literally just going to run the same play (get it to Dylan for an iso).

The tragedy was how Dylan didn’t drive to the hoop both chances he had to win the game when we were in the BONUS.

This isn’t the first game he’s done this either.

Low basketball IQ across the team and staff.

Call timeout and get JWill, Davis and Grant off the floor.

Both teams were shockingly not using TOs.
USC nearly ended the game with 3 TOs.
It worked out for them luckily.

Do college HCs just not value setting up an offensive play for end of game scenarios?

One of my criticisms of Pike is his inability to execute a basic inbounds play under pressure. Why does every team we play find their first or second best free throw shooter but on our inbounds it arms to end up in the hands of one of our worst shooters? It’s not just last night, this has been under his whole tenure. Last night it was JWill. In past years it somehow always ended up with Caleb McConnell. Great defensive player, not a great FT shooter.

I remember early in Pike's career on the Banks I said the guy could coach, but he can't recruit worth sh!+. After he make that brief and improbable tourney run I ate crow and had to honor my promise to shut up about him because I said he'd never make the tourney. But now that he has figured out how to recruit this dream duo, he's seemingly forgotten how to coach.

There is zero chance he is here in 2030. The buyout goes way down well before that. If next year begins to look like this one, he's going to get the sh&t booed out of him.
It's not a buyout of his contract for Rutgers, it's a buyout that protects him from being poached by other schools or if he decides to resign. Rutgers is gonna have to pay him unless he goes mentally insane and gets fired for cause.

Am i wrong on this?

It’s because he knows how to coach a certain kind of team, and a freshman-laden team, even with a couple that have astronomical talent, ain’t it.

He needs hard nosed defensive minded kids who he can teach to play his defense, ideally over the course of multiple seasons. This was NOT a roster that played to Pike’s strengths at all.

Exactly my thoughts----this team didn't guard anybody.

Are u going to tell me the guy doesn't know defense ?

Four of his first 5 teams were in the Top 20 Nationally defensively.

This team isn't in the Top 200 .

So much of defense is effort.

Ooof. I need a drink. A double.

You idiot. Harper HAD the ball and didn’t go to the hoop. Then he had a step-back jumper and instead passed it to Williams. Coaches fault.

it never ceases to amaze how little guys know when they call out coaching.

harper gets a massive in traffic rebound...huge play...comes over half court and we setup a play (even switching acuff and jmike to get a better shooter in the corner). usc is double teaming dylan. guy on him and guy in the paint with eyes fixed on dylan and no one else. also the guy on acuff on jwill were over helping. when he started to try and drive it became obvoius him getting to the rim was a pipe dream. he tries to reverse pivot but it's dead. acuff's man is helping but also doing a good job of blocking that pass and jwill talked with the "whoooo" which was a good play to let dylan know where he was. he just didn't make the shot.

there isn't much you are going to do coaching wise here. when you only have one guy teams fear (ace fouled out) it's not super hard to shut that guy down. only shot dylan was getting was probably going to be a 3. which he kinda tried and failed miserably at the end of regulation.

Come on man, you’re taking JWills on court awareness over Pikes coaching.

nah...he catches the pass with under 3 seconds left and his man and jmike's man come sprinting at him. if he takes one dribble they are on him he doubled and dead...only thing he could've done was kick to jmike for a buzzer type 3...

Musselman's no Bobby Knight either.

I’m saying he should have been cutting so Harper could hit him going to the basket.

possible if he had cut at the perfect time he could've shot a floater type i suppose...but also possible harper would've been cut-off from seeing him there were four guys in the paint effectively before harper reverse pivoted. he certainly wasn't getting all the way to the rim.

No, he'd just be cutting into the defense, nothing there. We got a wide open shot, all you can ask for.

Sorry I’m not getting what you mean.

I mean just because that’s what JWill did, doesn’t mean that’s what the play call was or was even the best decision with the ball in his hands. We’ve seen him do the wrong thing all season long.
