This team wasn't going to beat anybody last night. Literally like a person beaten with his own stick.
Time to either say produce or sit. Not that it seemed to matter, but they will not have the RAC to help them.
And...where the hell is Mag???? Maybe time for tough love to get him out there.

Maybe a road game this week will do them some good. Maybe they’ll figure out who they are, play tough on the road and figure out what the identity of this team is. Right now they have no identity and play like dudes running pickup games at a local gym.

I truly expect them to play better next game. We’re not a good team but yesterday was an absolute shit*show

Unfortunately, that is so true. Illinois has much bigger guards than RU and certainly looks like a tournament team. Wake and RU are similar level so I at least expect a competitive game with hopefully a win.

Pike has to do better coaching. He cannot say after St. Peter’s the rebounding differential was extreme because of their 24 turnovers. That doesn’t explain their 15 offensive rebounds. It was frustrating sitting there watching St. Peter’s get second and third shots which they converted for about 12 points . They had 28 points at 1 point but should have had 16.
Now you absolutely get demolished on both boards a number leading to second and third shots that Illinois converted. He has to correct the problem now and not think that if MAG comes back that will help. Gavin and Aundre , Wolf and Oscar have to rebound. All the guards , I do not care about their size have to rebound or attempt.
The other thing he can do is make the whole damn team use the backboard when they are 6-7 feet or in. We miss more layups than every team in the country because of lousy fundamentals. They miss a layup in practice where a guy is not fouled , they run 5 sprints. Do it they get it right and thru their heads. It is costing us games, costing us staying in games, costing us expanding on leads we have , and is damn demoralizing.

These are things he can control. Then he has to get Cliff away from the top of the key and down low to get offensive rebounds which he is good at. He is not a stretch 5 threat , so if you are not running pick and roll with Cliff, he has to be on baseline or the block.

2 messages for Pike :

- next few practices just run rebounding drills. Refocus Cliff and the forwards how to go after the ball after a miss shot. Refocus the guards to go after the ball when the big men are tying up their defender.

- Need to give Gavin more minutes and more looks. If he keeps using Gavin as an example / scapegoat - who knows what Gavin does next year?

Also Cliff has to stop trying to block every shot. He won’t get the block 90% of the time and it hurts us because no one else can rebound

You would've had to sit the entire team.

And what makes you think it's Mag making the decision not to play?

I keep seeing multiple people say the rebounding and intensity needs to be fixed and in the same paragraph we need to play Gavin more.

The solution to the defensive rebounding and defense is benching Gavin.

The offensive problem is a different story

Gavin was tied for 7th (with Davis) in minutes against Illinois.
If there was a rebounding and intensity problem it isn't being fixed by playing him less minutes.

Less minutes just means exaggerating the offensive problem while also not fixing the rebounding problem.

That is still half the game with our worst rebounder on the floor.

The tough thing is we have 2 problems and both with different personnel as the solution.

Looking at the season as a whole. Offense is the problem and defense is a strength. Now if you take out the 5 easy games then they both are issues.

To me it isnt as much Gavins inpact on the defensive end and more what it says to the team to allow a guy who doesnt want to take a charge and doesnt want contact to get minutes. Gavin hasnt earned minutes.

He said doctors have cleared him. It is up to Mawot when he is ready to play.

Consistent message from opening night
I've seen several of his press conferences but don't recall hearing that. If you could point me at a specific clip, I'd like to see how he phrases it. Because, while it's not entirely unheard of, it seems like something Pike would avoid doing.

So then who is playing those additional minutes and has earned them?

What is the message that you can get blocked 4 times a game or throw up contested shots?
Not exactly team basketball.

Not taking a charge: benched
3 blocked layups: more minutes?

Spot on comments regarding the lack of basic fundamentals at both ends of the court.

You and I are in complete agreement here.

There is a difference between making a mistake trying to make a play and not hustling back on D, not going after loose balls, getting out of the way instead of taking a charge.

You have your finger on the pulse of one of the 2 primary issues I see with the team.

Cliff is not a good rebounder against real players and his hands don't help.

So here's the video, cued up to the question:

That does give the impression that doctors have signed off and it's up to Mag to say he's ready. OTOH, it's not entirely definitive - Pike doesn't say (in that video, at least) that the doctors have signed off, it's only implied.

In any event, as a coach, I would never push a player who didn't think they were ready to play yet. That's not tough love; it's borderline abusive, IMO. Push a player that doesn't feel ready and it could lead to a nasty scandal if the player winds up quickly getting badly reinjured.

I've coached soccer players who had ACL and other serious knee injuries. Each injury is it's own thing, each player will recover at a unique pace. And reinjury or injuring the other knee is not at all uncommon. Some players never fully recover physically and/or mentally.

So if I'm Pike, I wouldn't push. Seems like he's not.

He uses the word "he" instead of "we". Why doesn't he say "we"? He is throwing Mag under the bus.

Would you push one of your sheep? Little tough love?

My sheep never get injured. They are cared for like the furry little loved ones they are. 😀
