Prior to this year, I think the fire Pike crowd was premature. But absent Harper and Bailey committing, he’s been mediocre to bad in recruiting, developing and in-game coaching since last season. I’d go so far as to say, if not for Ace and Dylan (who are basically carrying this team to mediocrity) we’d be talking about replacing Pike during this season.
I’m thankful for him pulling Rutgers out of the CMBB basement, but it’s clear he is a remedial coach- meaning he’s able to maximize the ability of lower level players, but he seems clueless when it comes to coaching up premium talent. If RU is going to consistently be a competent program in the NIL era, he needs to be replaced.
I was hoping his ability to reel in high level recruits like Ace and Dylan was a glimpse into what he could do in recruiting after demonstrating it’s possible to win at RU, but the rest of this year’s roster and next year’s recruiting class indicate that Dylan and Ace are an anomaly. What’s worse is, even with them on board, we are still barely mediocre.
Was planning to travel to see them play Oregon in February, but today’s performance sealed it for me- getting to see two future lottery picks play in RU uniforms is outweighed by the frustration of watching a poorly coached, poorly constructed team.
Absent some insane turnaround, I’m done watching this team this year and ignoring any calls for NIL contributions to the MBB until Pike is coaching somewhere else.
