When will this board get it…pike not a good coach

Not. A. Good. Coach.
He can teach defensive concepts to willing players.
Failed to surround Ace and Dylan with support.
Runs no offense.
Dylan and Ace create their own shots. They thrive in spite of pike.
This was a lucky win. Again.

I watched many games yesterday with a high major D1 coach. He thought Pike was a good coach and a good man.

I'm thinking his opinion has a little more clout than yours does.

What do you think?

Halloway was asked in his presser to explain the difference defensively between halves. As odd as that presser was, he explained that in the first half we used a lot of screens and they attacked the screens well and got the turnovers but in the second half we stopped the screens. This caused their defense to change and they wound up fouling more. Yes, we went more iso which is being heavily criticized in this thread as an example of Pike’s inability to coach. It worked. They fouled a lot but we missed the fouls shots.. sometimes coaches make adjustments that don’t work out because the execution (in this case foul shooting) doesn’t work out. The opposing coach (not me) pointed out that Rutgers changed their approach and it worked. Well who was responsible for that change in approach? I wonder, maybe it was the RU COACH.
I didn’t watch the first half but saw the turnovers and understood why we would be more iso in the second half and hence lower assist to fg which Kyk was using as a cudgel.

This guy is a good friend of 20 years and we watched the games yesterday while sitting on his couch while our wives and kids made cookies. He gave his opinion about Pike without me asking.
He’s a good coach. Lots of uninformed cyo level coaches or worse conflating youth league experiences with college. People don’t understand what they see.

not for nothing, but in 20 years has he ever said someone else is a bad coach ?

Overall, Shelby thinks he’s a good coach (not a great coach) but doesn’t put any stock in what one coach says about another in the fraternity.

Yup, Pike’s teams have been notoriously weak defensively.

Truly remarkable, people need to start watching the games. D and rebounding have improved significantly. Turnovers and sloppy play are now the focus areas (and FTs) - but I suspect those will work themselves out as they get more time together.

Funny, Saturday pike was playing against himself. That SHU team looked a lot like several of our teams over the last few years. Hard aggressive defensive 48 - 47 rock fights.

Credit to Sha as well in getting his guys fired up. SHU played with some attitude.

Pike might be the best coach we’ve had in 40 years but that doesn’t make him “good”. His record is barely over .500. The game has changed, which nullifies is best attributes as a player developer, and under-the-radar hs recrutier, and exposes his weaknesses as a game coach and portal recruiter.

Also, of those prior coaches, Littlepage, Wenzel, Brannon, Waters, Hill, Rice, and Jordan, only Waters had a winning record (barely), and none of them left for a better job and most of them got canned while some exhibited truly bizarre behavior (Bannon, Hill, Rice, and Jordan). We sure have picked some “winners”. At least Pike is a stand-up, high character guy.

Regardless, “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.”

You really can’t hold Pike accountable for the first few years - much like you can’t hold Greg accountable for the first few years. Takes a little while to turn things around.

Pike is 12 games over .500 as RU coach which is pretty good considering what he had to clean up when he got here. You challenging in a passive agressive manner that he is not at a minimum "good" ....makes you an idiot.

Anyone whos not concerned watching the first 11 games of this season is kidding themselves.

Pike is a GREAT person, really good defensive coach but as has always been true with him, his offensive coaching is really lacking.

We have a lot of inexperienced players out there so youd think wed be running some kind of action to help them. But we are not. The Fox commentator in the studio after the game said Rutgers is in trouble this season because its way too much iso ball and very little ball movement. He said something like we only had 6 assists on 23 makes today which is extremely low.
In fairness, Saturday's assist total was abnormally low. Didn't we have assists on 75% of our baskets in a game recently?

lol…class act, calling people names. We’ll see if his 3,25 million dollar salary with two top 5 draft picks even sniffs the tournament. I sure hope it does but we just keep setting the bar lower.

The objective of any good offense is to make a high percentage of shots. RU shot 53.5% against SHU, including 53.8% on threes. Those are very efficient numbers.

We also got to the foul line a lot, which is another indication that our offense was tough to stop.

The highest ranked team we’ve played this year, #7 Alabama, just beat Creighton 83-75 and only shot 43% from the field. Are you gonna say their coach doesn’t know how to run an offense?

Nothing wrong with ISO ball when you have two NBA players doing most of the scoring. Going ISO cut out a lot of assist opportunities, but also cut way back on our turnovers in the second half.

Whether it’s Alabama shooting 43% or Rutgers shooting 54%, the idea is to win the game, which we did. Winning is good coaching,

Nice try at a deflection, his salary has nothing to do with the point. You sound like one of those fans who are jealous of player and coaching salary structure. You've admitted that you do not think he's a good coach ....its not name calling to refer to your intelligence level, its a fact. Pike has already proven to be a good coach regardless of what happens going forward based on what he's been able to do here and what the program went through 40 years prior.

You want to cast stones at him, here's another fact. RU does not need fans like you. Complaining all the time, give nothing, don't go to games. You add nothing except continually bad opinions and a loser mentality on a message board like your buddy Lou.
