When will this board get it…pike not a good coach

People that don't think Pike can coach, the how do explain he's been a winning coach wherever he's been. Like this easy to integrate 4 transfers with 5 Freshman and play a big ten schedule as well as the Vegas tournament. Lot's of ignorance on this board.

In a normal season it wouldn’t matter as much. But there is a chance - a good chance (won’t quantify it) that we actually miss the tourney this year with two lottery picks on the team. And that’s inexcusable.
I will be the first peraon to eat crow if we dance and make noise (round of 16).
You’ve eaten crow about 100 times, act like you’ve turned a corner, and then are right back with the same tired meltdowns. This time after a buzzer beater win against our rival. New low!

Uh see late 70 s early 80s till pike

Scattered moments vs sustained competitveness
Not sure my post was understood.

We had sporadic moments from the late 70s early 80s UNTIL Pike, when after the first years, we have had sustained competitiveness.

Ummmm. Are you serious? These are players many of which are making $$$ on top of being on scholarship. On them to make the FTs. Zero to do with Pike.
... except they don't. Historically. For about a decade. We consistently have bottom-of-the-conference free throw shooting. Whose fault is that?

1) define winning coach

2) i dont think many if any people say hes a bad coach. Just that his teams abilities are severely handicapped due to his lack of offensive structure/system/knowledge

it’s incredible with the top level talent on this roster that we’re still going to be sweating on selection sunday. in september, I was hopeful we would have a chance at a top 4 seed - that’s out the window already.

winning coach? he has won a single ncaa tournament game in his career

Considering how we look after 11 games, sign me up for even having something to sweat for on selection sunday. This doesnt look like a tourney team 11 games in and of course the NET and kenpom dont believe we are either

yeah, and half the posters on the board want us to be positive about that

Not. A. Good. Coach.
He can teach defensive concepts to willing players.
Failed to surround Ace and Dylan with support.
Runs no offense.
Dylan and Ace create their own shots. They thrive in spite of pike.
This was a lucky win. Again.
I'm getting more and more comfortable with the benefits of ignore. It's generally reserved for folks who way too often produce reactionary blather. Welcome.

Just depends what someones hope for the program is. Basketball is unique because due to the fact its not physics like football, upsets are far more common and far easier for cinderella to go on a run in ncaa bball than it is in fbs football.

If youre okay with one tourney win a decade but always being competitive, pikes fine, and that may just be enough.

If someone wants to ever see past the first weekend, pikes probably not the guy
Do we have the financial support here to attract a coach getting us to the Sweet 16?

That’s kind of an interesting question . You can have a high paid and very good coach that may never get out of the first weekend. You may have an average coach that gets in and things break right. It’s madness . Kinda crazy the whole sport is judged by a couple bounces in March…also kinda awesome

I wouldnt say never. If youre a very good top 20 level coach, over the course of a decade the bounces will even out and while you may lose a 1st round game you shouldve won, youll probably also win a sweet 16 game you shouldve lost

Well, it’s a crazy sport.
Lots of good coaches never make the final 4.

I mean, pikes contract alone should afford a sweet 16 level coach. Hes the 22nd highest paid coach in the country

Wouldn’t that be.. a second round level coach?

Presumably we would need to pay significantly more to attract a proven sweet 16 level coach away from wherever they are currently coaching. Realistically if we fired Pike we would be taking a flyer on another up and comer from a small conference

I got nothing else, that’s a good point. I just don’t know if this is the attractive job we all think it is but if we are paying like that, plus the RAC plus our practice facility…we are in decent shape

If that’s how it worked , why not just pay a guy number 2 and take your chances in the NC game ?

We rank 230th nationally in assists/FGM
That’s not a real meaningful stat. You’re talking about a couple of assists per game vs an iso with two guys that are pretty effective. I think I’d be ok with iso vs less with this roster construction.

Ace was 1-8, our most talented offensive player. Great job by Pike putting him in position to get to the line for easy points. You usually is more efficient. That's why.
Who was shooting 76% coming into the game.

the point is we have the resources to compete with other teams that make it deep into the tournament
Yes … we always did
The goal is get in the tournament and you take your chances . You get in enough , and eventually you make a run .
But this fanbase and school not only likes the NIT, but embraces it

I think in the past this job was viewed as a career killer but now far from it.

Between

1) presumably top 20-25 compensation for a HC
2) one of the top home courts in america
3) one of the top practice facilities in america
4) big ten rev share to fund a team

I think it’s an extremely attractive job where if it were to open up there would be a laundry list of high quality guys who want it.

There are quite a few sad and horrible posts here. Some of you seem to forget the bad times we had before Pikiell was hired. He has made us a very much better team and we are respected. Steve did not miss 15 foul shots today. Before the Penn State game we were hitting over 75 % of our free throws. Today was bad but trust me I have attended 9 practices already this year and I see first hand how hard our coaches and our players work every single day. Yes Ace only shot 1-8 today on the line but that is not on Steve. These guys are human beings and somedays are not as good as other days. Dylan and Ace are just barely 18 and are often playing against 23 or 24 year old men. I am quite sure that most doing the criticism never participated in D-1 sports in college. Get a life already and root for Rutgers rather than trying to rip us apart. We don't need constant negative nellies. Our coaches and players do things the right way but all I hear is people taking shots at our coach and our players. I think that is absolutely absurd. We have sold out our arena for the season and many are still complaining. I guess some of you would like to go back to when we only drew 3,000-4,000 people for our OOC games.
