Why does he constantly take out players, other than Geo and Eugene, when they are playing really well?

A lot of yesterday was just based on fouls. Mathis and EO fouling early lessened our chances. One funny sub was putting Mathis back in with a 1.50 to go till half.

People were complying to fans who were talking about the refs, but it’s not that the refs were making terrible calls all game, etc. Yes it got out of hand at the end (the score). BUT the officials took over the game once it looked like we were going to pull away - and that is how they change the game. Started calling ticky tack fouls on our key players, and our guys who were hot - gene and Montez. The players start to notice and it totally effects their mentality - you can see it when the camera zooms to them after a bad foul - they all know it and it totally effects them. It goes from bad to worse and the game gets ugly.

I said the same thing. Unless we have someone playing poorly, why keep changing the lineup. It's like the final 3 minutes of a close game where you need offense, than defense. It might be because we're so challenged scoring, but it's hard to get into a flow as an individual player. Put your best lineup in and let them play 4-5 minutes unless we're fouling. The media TOs only provide more time to sub early in the game too.

Guys were in foul trouble all game. You sorta have to stretch the bench if the team isn’t discipline. No coach wants to go 10 deep.

Was saying this to my gf. He constantly does this at times when were finding a rhythm and playing well. Then it goes to hell.

Yesterday was disgusting.

As I said in my post yesterday...we are playing too many players right now. While my major point was that we need the players that most likely will be the difference makers on the court now to grow and develop ...part of the logic is the players need to be on the court longer to get into a rhythm

We were questioning the subs too. Didn't seem to follow fouls most of the time. We were wondering if it was an offense/defense thing but couldn't see the pattern.

the coaching staff has been struggling the past 5 games with lineups...at least they finally are allowing Mathis to get his minutes, it needs to continue

The best potential line-up IMO is probably Geo, Mathis, Harper, Gene and Carter... but I think switching out McConnell and Harper is probably more sane to get Geo off the ball

agree...I am little more hesitant with Harper at this time but am okay with a split for he and McConnell with time and do agree that Carter needs more minutes, Mathis needs to be a full time starter

I really think the staff was thrown off their gameplan for the season

Would love to see a four minute run with Johnson at the 5, Carter at the 4, Gene at the 3, Geo at the 2 and McConnell at the 1. That’s five guys with good size and length that can all score, defend and rebound.

Besides that it’s clear that Mathis and Harper need to be on the court more.

Those 7 should get the bulk of the minutes with the next 3 of Kiss, Thiam and Doorson coming in to fill in as needed.

Real lack of players who can shot under a good defense. And it does not look like the 2019 recruiting is going to make a significant change. If you lose to Fordham and just get by Columbia you are not ready for the B10

Sometimes when your team is not playing well you have to put players playing well in even if they’re in foul trouble to try and keep you in the game.

I think Coach is having a real hard time deciding who should be on the floor, as he has committed to playing 10 guys even though all 10 do not deserve the time. He went into the season thinking Issa and Kiss would give us 15-25 points per game and he is getting almost nothing out of that crucial position. He seems committed to paying the freshman , but he has repeatedly failed to play Shaquille Carter , who is clearly our best low post scorer and finisher, despite seeing his production against Michigan State and other quality opponents. Was so frustrated with his failure to put him in during that awful last 10 minutes of the first half and for long stretches of the second half . Even worse he put him in and yanked him quickly and put Eugene back in the game despite it being obvious Eugene was not having a great day. Why he doesn’t play them together is baffling. He left Issa and Kiss in too long yesterday when it was pretty clear they were giving you nothing . Mathis have a nice stretch of driving the lane and he took him out too long before his foul trouble became an issue. Even Harper finally hit 2 threes ina row and he took him out instead of allowing him to maybe hit 4-5 in a row. This is the first time in 3 years I am questioning any of his coaching , as he has been a terrific head coach that hardly ever gets outcoached. But lately , his failure to pound the ball down low to Myles or either Shaq , besides Eugene, especially when we are struggling to score is baffling as is his substitutions. I think his loyalty to his upper classmen and his undue pressure on Geo and Eugene has caused a regression of each of their games. He has been so adamant that Geo can handle, set up the team, lead in scoring, and defend the best guard, but it is plainly obvious he can not. I did not want to say it but he is not Corey, who was our best player , an All Big 10 type player that every opposing coach and every player on the other team, knew could torch them and make them look bad on any night..Geo’s handling and dribbling has gotten worse as he is dribbling into trouble and run out turnovers way too often . His shooting has become atrocious. It is time to rethink who should be out there and let them play through without the constant subbing. If he wants to put a few of the guys in for 2-3 minutes to see if they can hit a three or give us a spark okay but otherwise the rotation should in my opinion be tightened and Geo and Eugene should be doing less. Eugene should go back to being that offensive rebounding machine and Geo should be playing off the ball. I hope Coach figures it out because the building had so much juice in it yesterday expecting a raucous win and for 10 minutes of atrocious ball at the end of the half , the RAC got the wind taken out of its sails . Coach has to win his home games and that starts on Wednesday. Otherwise, we will all be on here in the dumps the rest of the year

You are 100% spot on with the your first 7, and next 3.....I believe that’s what you’ll see the rest of the year.

Substitutions are happening quickly because Pikiell is looking for players to make some baskets so the team can stay competitive throughout the game.Long scoring droughts has been the down fall of the team so far this season.

This can be counterproductive because then the guys on the floor are going to be thinking "I better make a basket or I'm going to get yanked" and throw up an ill-advised attempt to try to do so.

It’s amazing when you think that Kiss, Doorson and Thiam were all starters on day one of this season, and now the consensus is building that all three should not be in our top 7.

Unless something changes they’re all being outplayed by others who are earning more minutes with each game.

Ref's absolutely can & do change the complexion & results of a game.

Agree with this. There are only 3 groups who affect the outcome of every game: the coaches, the players and the refs.

The best thing you can ever say about refs in any sport is that they called the game fairly and equally for both teams, so that they had no discernible impact on the outcome. That’s probably true most of the time but to think they’ve never unfairly impacted the outcome for one side or the other is naive.

In theory Geo Kiss Harper Thiam McConell (maybe Mathis) all at least average 3 point shooters. You would expect each game that a few of these players will have a good shooting night or at least ok. Somehow most games it has been maybe 1 of the group 2 max. You just can't win games with the entire team struggling to shoot.

That's the problem....theory shmeory. Issa is the only player who is over the current NCAA 3 pt averge % over his career.

Those 5 this year...77-245 31.4%. At least it's better than 29.6% (last year)

I posted this in another thread after Saturday’s game:

Mathis
McConnell
Harper
Johnson
Carter
plus Geo and Eugene

1. I think this is the core 7 to develop and get experience this year. Sprinkle in Kiss, Doorson and Thiam to see if they can get hot and to rest the core 7. Spend a little extra practice time on improving shot selection, fast breaks and secondary breaks, and finishing close to the hoop. Oh and foul shots. R Women’s hoops shot over 90% from the line yesterday with lots of swishes.

I would add the time keeper who controls running of shot clock and the time clock. It only takes a change of a few seconds between teams getting shots off and there being a shot clock violation.

Agree about the clock operator and was going to mention that. Decided not to because it rarely impacts the game and in most critical situations like end-game, the refs have the ability to review and adjust the clock accordingly. But if you wanna say they are at least in the mix then I’ll buy it.
