Politi article on Ash--Must read

The most intersting comment from the article for me was Ash saying that most people say our facilities are great, but, according to him, they really aren't. He said our facilities are on par with Syracuse, BC and Temple, but we don't play those teams anymore. Brutal honesty. Love it.

The article is excellent. There is a lot in it that may explain why Flood may have had trouble closing the deal with recruits once they visited other schools. Politi, of course, does link to an article about the troubles that occurred last year in the section about housing. But, it is Politi and they will not let go. But, I agree that it is a very well done article and very interesting.

Our facilities are just not competitive, for B1G Standards, and I've been reiterating this for two years, after visiting Ohio State.

"Everybody thinks that the facility here is outstanding. I'll tell you: It's not," Ash said during a wide-ranging interview as the sun rose last Thursday. "Just look around. This is not on par with what Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State have.

"Is it on par with Boston College, Temple, Syracuse and UConn? Yeah, but we don't play those teams any more."[thumb2]

Now maybe you can finally see for yourself why some of us are very high on Ash.

Ash gets it on so many levels. And for all those who were crying over the 2016 recruiting class, just watch how 2017 transpires. You'll see.

Many many similarities to a young Schiano. But he has a much more of a base to build off of (bowl trophies to show as 1 example and obviously being part of a powerhouse conference with great exposure). Love the comment he made that someone else will be coaching here if we wait until 2021 (full share of B1G revenues) before upgrading facilities. We do need to be patient as it will take a few seasons to see major results on the field (just like in Schiano's early years).

Guaranteed that there will be follow-up articles in the SL that complain about the amount of money that is being thrown at football. Think back. When the Big Ten announcement came out there were those who decried our entrance, basically saying that yes, there would be more money in the new conference, but we would have to spend all of that money and then some to keep up with the rest of the schools. This article lays the ground work for those naysayers to claim that their point has already been proven.

1) anybody here - and there were quite a few - who thought OUR facilities were on par with others in the B1G were always fooling themselves. Hopefully they'll believe, finally, that they aren't.

2) I'll keep my comments to myself on this one:

"Ash said he doesn't mind keeping things the way they were under predecessor Kyle Flood, who he hasn't spoken to since taking the job, if they helped recruit or develop players. He is just hard pressed to come up with an example."

You are correct but that base isn't all that impressive when compared to trophy rooms of our division mates.

GS had to take us from the worse FBS program that was getting beat by FCS teams to a program that could complete in the Big East. We never won the Big East under him but we were no longer a doormat at least.

Ash now has to take us from a program who can complete in the old Big East to a program who can complete in the best division in CFB. I am not sure if we will ever win a National championship but hopefully we will no longer be doormats and we will no longer get blown out by historically large amounts whenever we play a team with a pulse. To have another 2006 style year we just need a winning record against these 4 schools: OSU, MSU, UM, and PSU. It may take years to build the type of program and team that can do that, but at least now it seems like it might be possible. We are pretty far away from doing that today but at least it appears that we are on the right path to some day get to that point.

How did you get a tour of OSU's training facilities & athletic dorms?

I was one of a dozen RU fans treated to a tour of the Nebraska facilities, including being out on the field, but not the dorms, and, via Lady Knight Football Camp, I have been in the RU facilities at the Hale Center.
No comparison. None whatsoever. The RU facilities look like a HS gym compared to NU.

Good article. I like how Ash doesn't sugarcoat anything. You can certainly see that Hobbs and Ash work very well together. It seems like Flood really was riding on the coattails of GS and really didn't improve anything.

Unfortunately, we have a bit of a space/building problem also. Until the basketball/volleyball/gymastics facilities are built, we can't expand the space that football has.

Hopefully it happens.

Doesn't sugar coat anything, tells it like it is, yet doesn't put his foot in his mouth
and get himself in trouble. Like someone else we know.

I've never seen the facilities in the Hale Center, but, I thought they were pretty damn good based on the comments from visiting recruits, but, I guess it's easy to be impressed when he come from HS facilities.

noticed the same thing when I go to the HC compared to other schools facilities, specifically SC. It's not that they are just nicer, it's they are maintained better. The HC looked drab. Ash gets it all. It's why you hire a guy who has been around big time programs. Like the not so subtle shots at the other northeast schools. Well played.

Yeah, that line really stuck out to me as well.

The beauty of hiring someone who has seen the best programs in the country is that they understand what the standard is to win at the highest level. I don't want to dump on Flood, but he didn't seem to know what he was up against.

“What stood out me to the most is the weight room. It was beautiful,” Barrow said. “I am all about working hard and the money is made in the weight room. As I am saying how beautiful it is, coach Busch said ‘this old thing? This is going to be redone.’ I said why would you redo this?”

Subtle? I thought it was a howitzer - LOL

Take that Barber and Syracuse! Ha ha.

Why do I keep on bringing up fundraising?" he asked. "Well, we're not going to be a fully funded Big Ten program until 2021. We can't wait until 2021 to get the full allotment of Big Ten money to make these changes.

"If we do, then there'll probably be another new head coach sitting here talking to you in five years."

Ash gets it! Ball in RU admins court ......once again.strap em on Barchi..borrow against the full B10 share..get contsruction/bids started now..not like 4 years from now.or just keep paying mid major head coaches buyouts down the road..over and over.

At the very least, Ash shows he understands the mindset of the Rutgers fanbase and understands who we see in the rearview mirror and who we think we are now better than.

I thought Rutgers just got a $1 million gift for a new weight room?

if yes, other investments need to go towards the small weight room.

RutgersAl and Coach Ash are correct in stating, "This is not on par with what Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State have.
But is also true that we are on a par with Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois and Purdue.
So in a nut shell we are on par with the bottom half not the top half of our Football conference.
With the minimum $ available, all Coach Ash can do is to bootstrap us up to the middle i.e. ~Iowa

He brought up FUNDRAISING, not borrowing. While I agree that a certain amount of borrowing may be necessary, alums need to step up and give more than they have been giving in the past. That ball seems to be in OUR court.

I agree with this, if you are correct that we are on par with those you listed. Wonder what Northwestern's and Wisconsin's facilities look like. Not saying we should aim for the bottom-middle, but we can start with gradual improvements and continue to improve over time. We do not have the war chest or ticket sales of over 100,000 seats per home game to compete with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State. Realized that we are in the B1G East, but we need to be realistic with what we will be able to do in the short term.

That speaks volumes. Like AreYouNUTS, I'll refrain from adding any additional commentary to that one. :)

I know that we're in a honeymoon period with Chris Ash, and we all want to see something tangible on the field from him and his new staff, but I cannot be anything but wowed by him at this stage. During 2015, when it became apparent to me that Flood had to be replaced, I was very worried that we would hire someone who would sacrifice a lot of the values that the RU program stood for before last year's shenanigins, someone without ethics or would be willing to sacrifice doing things the right way. I have none of those concerns with Chris Ash; not only is he focused on building a winning program, he is focused on doing it the right way, building a solid foundation and doing it with men of character.

The other thing that is really compelling to me about Chris Ash is that he is both a man of vision and one who is also very detail-oriented. You don't see that too much in corporate America, let alone among college football HCs. Looking at our neighbor in central PA, for example, he is all about vision, and leaves the detail to others.

Good times are ahead for Rutgers football. I really think that Barchi hit a home run with Hobbs, who in turn hit it out of the part with the Chris Ash hire.

No thanks. Wasn't trying to turn this into debate. Thank you for sharing an article, but no thanks on ever visiting that website.

Ash gets it: It comes down to recruiting.

Notice most of his comments were recruiting-centric.

Case in point: Painting the rusty ice-machine doesn't make it functionally better. However, a rusty machine tells recruits that we are a low-rent program. And it tells our players that small details and pride don't matter.

We need A LOT more if we are going to compete.

Indeed, the ball is in our court. Open your wallets people.

Not so - as the 2 lacrosse teams as well as the soccer teams have a lot of space at the Hale Center. Those teams are scheduled to move to a new complex at Yurcak Field. I don't know if the Yurcak facility happens before or after the proposed facility gets built near the RAC for basketball, tennis, track, parking deck, ect.

I would hope that Ash has enough power to get total control of the Hale Center ASAP.
