Politi article on Ash--Must read

THIS was the exact logic behind Barchi getting Hobbs on board so quickly.

Barchi concludes, "OK we can institutionally embrace Big Ten, but this has to be something where the athletic dept. is as financially self-sustaining as possible, which it never has been, but the economics of big ten partnership alone makes an eventual likelihood. So how do we do that? We bring in a guy that has connections, respect and energy and the ability to communicate on the highest level.....Patrick Hobbs.

Agreed, Hobbs was an amazing hire.

Let's hope we still feel that way in a few years!

The Jury is still out on Hobbs, but I must admit, I like his background. Certainly from a logical perspective it works. I'm a little dismayed by Barchi's decision to hire Hobbs without going through a process. However, I do understand that when excellent people are available, sometimes you have forgo the process, and immediately hire them.

1. Hobb's hire of Ash is not without concerns.
2. Fundraising is always tricky, but so far so good.

People are already positioning Hobbs to take Barchi's place.

There's not really many ways to screw up remaining.....

In a few years, I doubt he will:
- have players shoot free throws naked
- tend bar off campus for charity and serve minors
- curse like a maniac and use epithets against athletes, while on tape
- have former players accuse him of being cruel
- curse out opposing players at a baseball game that his dad is coaching

What did I miss?

Please tell us what your concerns are; most here (including a few who hate this hire, for some reason...) have obviously voiced them, in December, but I'm curious to here what you have to say. Thanks.

There is *no* way that the Board of Governors is going to make a huge financial commitment to new athletic facilities. That would set off a firestorm both inside and outside Rutgers. Faculty would legitimately ask, "why are we investing in athletic facilities when we have so much trouble staffing the courses that students need to graduate?" Instead, the money has to come from Rutgers fans.
Ahhhh, they signed their new contract now they have to live with it. They bitched to high heaven for several months about it and the head of their union even threw football under the bus several times during negotiations. I'd tell them to go pound salt because their always going to bitch even though they're some of the highest paid professor's in the nation. :chairshot:

It's not a faculty salary issue. It's an issue about whether Rutgers is interested in providing courses so that its students can graduate on time, or more interested in being a sports factory. BTW, the new contract is exceedingly mediocre and doesn't even match cost of living.

Hobbs does have impressive credentials. He could be a candidate assuming he does a great job at AD.

New coach trashed everything. Bigger issues than expected. He will be long gone before all those issues are corrected based on current alumni donations.

Hobbs will have his work cut out for him. The Olympic Sports at Rutgers are in horrible shape. Each Coach has a built in excuse of "lack of funding, lack of facilities, etc". Yet in my mind, he needs to pretty much clean house. You can't do that kind of damage without making a bunch of enemies.

If I were Hobbs, the plan would be simple. I would hire Elite Coaches. In the end, kids want access to Elite Coaches. Most of these kids are already heavily invested in their careers. Attending Rutgers, and playing a sport shouldn't amount to taking a step back in their progression as an athlete.

Btw, Julie hire's of the Women's Golf Coach was excellent. We need more Coaches like that.

What we know about coach Ash from his background is that he wants to win and win big. If for one of myriad reasons he can't get that done here he will go to a place at which he thinks he can make it happen. If however he gets this program turned around and it starts to win then what we don't know about Coach Ash comes into play. What we don't know (and maybe Ash doesn't even know) is if he is the kind of coach that wants to turn programs around, a little like Billy Martin in baseball. He loved to turn the team around but could never really get into keeping it at that level. If Ash is like that he will leave to meet the challenge again somewhere else. Or is Ash the kind of coach who wants to be the guy who builds it and then maintains. Then he probably stays, assuming the money is there.

If Harbaugh leaves for the NFL, D'antonio retires and Meyer quits do to health reasons, then Rutgers would be perfectly poised to battle PSU, lol.

This will sound crazy, but all Ash has to do is get the QB situation correct.

1) anybody here - and there were quite a few - who thought OUR facilities were on par with others in the B1G were always fooling themselves. Hopefully they'll believe, finally, that they aren't.

2) I'll keep my comments to myself on this one:

"Ash said he doesn't mind keeping things the way they were under predecessor Kyle Flood, who he hasn't spoken to since taking the job, if they helped recruit or develop players. He is just hard pressed to come up with an example."

the reality is that Flood was coasting in the job, going to Counting Crows concerts and not being all in. I love the fact that Ash is from Ohio State so he is coming from the elite and knows what crap looks lik

This isn't just for football, its for all sports. For some reason Barchi and everbody else just didn't think that huge upgrades were needed. Changes shoud have been happening day 1 that the Big 10 invited us.TP and Rice totally distracted from what should have been going on the two years prior. RU is SOOOOOOOO FAR behind in faciilites it isn't even funny...and culture as well.

He brought up FUNDRAISING, not borrowing. While I agree that a certain amount of borrowing may be necessary, alums need to step up and give more than they have been giving in the past. That ball seems to be in OUR court.

we should be doing both...its criminal not to help out by borrowing...you think UConn wouldn't...every school would. Yes we need to fundraise like all the go get go but BOG/Barchi need to speed this process along.

Counting Crows, lol. That's Hilarious. Btw, What good are facilities if the Coaching Staff is rife with Non-Elite Coaches? I knew a kid that travelled two hours each way just to play for Coach Hurley. Facilities are overrated. Kids want access to Elite Coaches.

If I built you a lab, but didn't hire Pedigree'd Scientists, would it be reasonable to expect success? I think this logic applies here.

Whatever you build will be instantly outdated. Rutgers will never win the Arms Race. Obviously some investment in infrastructure is necessary. But Elite Coaching matters more.

I agree with this, if you are correct that we are on par with those you listed. Wonder what Northwestern's and Wisconsin's facilities look like. Not saying we should aim for the bottom-middle, but we can start with gradual improvements and continue to improve over time. We do not have the war chest or ticket sales of over 100,000 seats per home game to compete with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State. Realized that we are in the B1G East, but we need to be realistic with what we will be able to do in the short term.
Northwestern's new football facility will have a nice Lake view.

Quoting your linked story . . .

The playing surface within Ryan Fieldhouse will be named Wilson Field in honor of a $15 million gift from alumni Stephen R. and Susan K. Wilson.

The building is being named in recognition of a $40 million gift from alumni Mark and Kimbra Walter.

The renovated soccer/lacrosse field will be named Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium in honor of a $15 million campaign gift from alumnus J. Landis (Lanny) Martin and his wife, Sharon

In support of the project, Northwestern Athletics and Recreation recently received a new leadership gift of $23 million from University trustees Kimberly K. Querrey and Louis A. Simpson -

The gift from Querrey and Simpson raises their total support of the “We Will” Campaign to more than $152 million.

Northwestern also recently received a $5 million gift from Mitchell and Valerie Slotnick in support of Athletics and Recreation.

Now I know why Ash uses the hashtag #RaiseTheLevel.
That's an impressive list of donations.

HOW ON EARTH ARE WE GETTING "ELITE" COACHES HERE (sorry for yelling...) IF:

- we DO NOT have the money, and

- we DO NOT have the history!!!

I responded to you on the other board, as well, the bottom line is that exactly ONE "elite" coach - CVS - has every come here BEING KNOWN AS AN ELITE head coach. ONE!!! So, no, that is NOT how we're going to do it. We're going to do it the same way tons of other athletic programs have build their Olympic programs:

- with time, incredibly hard effort, the backing of alumni and friends from within the sport, and a GREAT up-and-comer as HC (read the attached article about the Wrestling program...a model success story that should be followed by our other teams and, from what I know and understand, is being closely followed by at least a couple of other programs already...):

- wait for the influx of B1G money.

You can repeat your "hire ELITE COACHES" mantra, all you want, but it's NOT happening here. Not now, that's for damn sure, and likely not for a long time.

Fools Chase Money, Smart People Chase Opportunity.

Pick a sport, and I will find you an Elite Coach that is chomping at the bit for an opportunity just like Rutgers. C'mon pick a sport.

Basketball is tough, lol. I was hoping for something like Field Hockey. The play here is a guy like Will Wade from VCU. Hobbs is in the people business. Treat people correctly, and you can win their affections.

Athletic departments are largely judged by football and men's basketball, not field hockey.

right, which is why Rutgers should focus on sports like Field Hockey. You would actually get more bang for your buck. Hire an Elite Tennis Coach, Field Hockey Coach, Volleyball Coach and Women's Lacrosse.

you could sure up those sports without having to make a huge infrastructure investment. Elite Coaches in the aforementioned sports would be relatively cheap.

Rutgers has struggled with a certain demographic(rich white elite high school kids), and hiring elite coaches in these types of sports would bridge that gap.

No one will care, having a good football and basketball teams provide the revenue to support the other sports.

Yes and no. There are athletic departments out there, at every level, which made their names in other sports prior to hoops and/or football.

Women's Tennis (since you brought it up before). Good luck at failing!

Seriously, Tennis is easy. There's a fantastic club in East Brunswick, that I really enjoy. But if I were to make a play, I really like Rance Brown from UCLA.

He's a fantastic Coach. He would turn around the program in a heart beat. Because he's an Elite Coach. And Kids want access to Elite Coaching.

I'm so glad you like him, NOW, explain to us EXACTLY how you plan to lure him here without money or history on your side.

"easy" lol....this is fun...Rance isn't even a Head Coach, but, okay!

So you were Ok with Coach Ash's genesis as an assistant, with Rutgers being his first job. Coach Brown is the same type of guy. I think it's safe to assume that Rutgers could pay more for him to be the Head Coach than he currently makes at UCLA.

I thought you were going to make this difficult. Unless of course, Rutgers cannot pay their Head Coach more than UCLA pays an Assistant.

I never said Brown isn't a good coach and can't be a great HC. Don't put words in my mouth. Now, stop trying to switch the subject, stop trying to spin, and ANSWER MY QUESTION: HOW are you getting a guy who has spent his entire life, or at least life from college until now, in Southern California or Florida, to come to Rutgers WITH NO $$$$ OR HISTORY???

Good luck. We can all "name names,' lol, that doesn't mean they're coming here. EPIC FAIL.

I totally forgot that you had a lobotomy. Sorry for expecting you to understand logic. According to you, unless your name is Elon Musk, what's the point.

but I'm pretty sure the same could be said for Coach Ash, and yet Hobbs got it done. Coach Brown would be pretty easy. Hey Coach, would you like to make more money than you currently make? No, I'd rather stay at UCLA, make less money, because the idea of running my own program has never occurred to me.

Ash is not messing around. He walks the walk and talks the talk. He fully plans on getting us even with Ohio and Michigan.

Flood and even Schiano would pull the bs telling recruits we are looking to play for a National Championship. Ash plans to actually do it and people believe him.

WTF are you even talking about??? This is your quest, not mine, and what "logic" do I NOT "understand"??

I can throw shit against the wall, too, doesn't mean it's gonna stick. All you did was throw out a name without ANY factual basis to argue as to WHY this person would come to Rutgers to coach. You FAILED, miserably, in supporting your own damn argument.

:cool2:

Now go get your shine box Spider.

Nice. So you can't construct a logical counter-argument. Instead you say I failed. That's hilarious. I bet your Mom loves you living in her basement, eating all the Meatloaf.
