Politi Slams Harbaugh In Article

Let's face it: Harbaugh is under intense pressure to win big and to win now. The Michigan faithful are absolutely going out of their minds losing by multiple TDs to OSU year in and year out.

IMO, Harbaugh wins now with "his guys" and parlays that into another NFL gig or is fired. Either way, he's not going to be at Michigan long enough to deal with the consequences of his actions.

Not a long article, and Politi gets to the point. It's hard to argue with any of it, and my favorite part might be the title.

"Recruits Beware: Jim Harbaugh's Word Means Nothing At Michigan"

One way to partially control this is by having a binding "early" signing period for Football.

They do it for Basketball and it should be instituted for Football.

Once a recruit commits during the early signing period he can't decommit and a Coach cannot take the ship away.

Partially solves the problem.

Get it done.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

To miketd1...
Doesn't matter... no reason to be a total douchebag with these STUDENTS' lives and future.

There are other ways besides kicking those that have been committed to the program to the curb last minute

Recruits should be wary of college coaches recruiting at high schools they don't usually go to. I don't think a college coach is going to screw around with recruits at places like Bosco, BC, St. Peters, St Joe's, Timber Creek, etc because they don't want to risk getting blackballed at that HS. But kids from random high schools in random places need to be especially mindful. Didn't Spurrier screw a kid from NJ when he was at S Carolina?

I would like this if it is limited...like every school has five early slots. This way it forces the schools and players to really know who is serious about each other. This way, this kid Swenson at Michigan can go to Harbaugh and say 'I want one of those early slots'...forces Harbaugh to make a call. It at least reduces the perception from a recruits side that he has options that he really doesn't have.

The students can decommitt at any time, yet the academic institutions must abide thier commitments or be scorned.
Now I know we are talking about teenagers compared to adults (alleged) but a happy medium of some kind must be instituded for all parties.

I like this idea.

Mach: I never said I agreed with his philosophy.

Michigan is a big boy football school and can afford to take risks like that. Even if it comes out that Harbaugh is knee deep in his own filth, all they have to do is hire the next shiny coach and proclaim how things will be different going forward.

Never thought I'd see the day when our local press roasts a school/coach that directly competes with RU like this.

And for it to be Politi?...bizarro world.
Just the turning of the tide. There will always be articles pro and con coming out of the local media, but the culture will slowly change to being more pro RU since we most likely have stopped serving up the ridiculousness (private meetings in Princeton, really?). And it started with Barchi and the administration finally getting behind the football program, both behind the scenes and publicly. The administration has learned a lesson--if you don't support the program and put your time into helping the athletic department (pronounced: football), it will run off course and you'll get eaten alive by the media and your own fanbase. Their motto used to be (in the words of Ron Swanson), "Never half-ass two things when you can whole-ass one." Politi called them out on it, with some extra horseshit thrown in, but now there are some good things happening.

My first thought was if Politi hates it Harbaugh must be doing something right!

How about this idea to expand on yours, that I just came up with. Obviously in pro sports the team with the worst record gets the top draft pick. There is no equivalent in college sports - the rich get richer in recruiting, year after year. How about the last place team in each division gets the most early commit spots, descending down to the first place team that gets 5. So, for instance this year, Rutgers gets 11, Maryland 10 all the way down to Michigan St who gets 5.

This would probably create a recruiting monster for the kids who don't gobble up the early spots and remain uncommitted. But I've thought for years on how to try to balance out power at least a little in CFB, and this idea just popped into my head. It'll never happen because the 10 biggest schools wield 95% of the power in CFB, but an interesting idea IMO.

any chance Ash & Co. goes after a few of these guys getting bumped? Offer them a chance to show the guy who burned them made a mistake.

If you actually think they are not doing that, then I am not sure what to tell you. But, many other schools are doing the same.

It is less than 10 days until signing day, so it is going to be a crazy race to the finish.

the big issue with early commitments is that it is typically before the season. A coach can get fired after the season but the kid will be locked into that school.

I like the idea of 5 early scholarships but maybe link it with a higher stipend for the student athlete. I forget what the stipends are but let's say it is $5000 for a Rutgers football player. So if a kid commits early in the 5 slots maybe he can get $7500 or $10000.

Seriously, there is absolutely no way that Politi doesn't read this board for story ideas. It's unbelievable.

So far I'm still liking ohio state and it's fans better than michigan and it's fans.
Me too. The condescending talk I hear from Michigan fans, even random Central Michigan alums, is nauseating. Their arrogance is second to none.
