Listen, I was/am a huge fan of GS. I would have loved for him to come back and finish what he started. But this rebuild is much harder then what GS went through in 2001 in my opinion.
All teams have some talent. Our 2001 and 2002 teams even had Gary Brackett and Nate Jones.
Ash has to prove himself as a HEAD COACH. Being an excellent assistant coach does not always translate into being an excellent head coach. There are numerous examples of this on the college level. Two are Norm Chow from USC and Lane Kiffin. Head coaching failures but outstanding assistants. Ash may turn like that. Maybe not. We don't know yet. But he certainly is not pointed in the positive direction as a HEAD coach. (Being as kind as possible)
I hear ya , flashbacks to Tennessee. The QB play has been awful, if we had a mediocre QB we beat Iowa and Illinois today.
Out of the first seven games, which game did you walk away saying the team hustled, never quit and were well coached in the same sentence.
Illinois's talent is on par with ours, they are not a good team. So how we lose by 17. Fumbles, penalties,bad play calling, and yes overall bad coaching.
We have no depth! That is the main problem, we have had an ENTIRE class worth of players get kick off or leave the program. Combined with poor recruiting for years under Flood and that is a recipe for what you see here.
Anyone blaming everything you see now on the coaching , the fire everyone crowd, are just frustrated because they haven't been paying attention that last 4 years both on the field and during the off season.

. My dad would have grabbed me by the back of the neck and dressed me down right in the stands, but that was a different generation. My son would have never scream at an adult let alone a HC to a college team. This kids dad stood right there and allowed him to yell at the coach. It lasted all of 5 maybe 10 seconds.
What you described in your post is 2/3 of the playmakers in your offense...and people wonder why we have such a hard time putting points on the board....
McMahon, We agree to disagree. I think Schiano walked into an equally tragic situation but was dealing with a different league and a little different schedule.We are now in the B1G .
I understand and I'm not going to argue at all. I'm strictly speaking with regards to expectations and a soft schedule for the most part (in comparison to now). The cupboard was worse in 2001 then now. The same people killing Ash today , would have called for GS to be fired by 2003.
The shame of it is, the Scarlet Knights could have won this one. They were the better team statistically, with more first downs (23 to 11) and more total yardage (385 to 320). The defense actually played well, and given the struggles the previous two weeks, that was a good sign.
Five turnovers and three failures to convert on fourth down, ultimately, was too much to overcome. Ash, as brutally honest as any coach I've encountered, didn't mince words: This team has hit a wall.

I looked up Coach Ash's resume. As a business person, I would have many questions about his short stays at quite a few schools. Spin that fact any way you like, but to me the multiple, short terms speaks to either a person who is tough to work with, or someone who isn't very good at their job.
Many of you are very high on his 1 year at Ohio State. You can barely install any kind of system in one year.
I'd love to hear why he is so impressive on paper to some of you.

We were desperate when he was hired and didn't have $$$$ for a bigger coach, i wasn't impressed what went down at ohio st hell wasn't that when they copied Narduzzi defense?
Fine, all the players and staff totally suck. Now what? What will the endless bitching actually solve. NOTHING.
Offer suggested realistic solutions instead.

So many people are blaming a lack of talent, and I get that to a point. However losing 56-0, 78-0, and a 24-7 loss to a bad team is plenty of reason to question coaching. How often does a team lose 78-0?

Yet his resume is equal to or better than Greg Schiano's when he got here. At least he had 8 more years experience than GS and called the D for a NC team. Not saying he is perfect but killing him after 7 games is silly.
The money thing is and always has been BS. We have top brass who don't want to spend it.
I think it's WAY too early to judge Ash since he might as well have 11 random dudes from the tailgate lots on the field, but to be fair, the talent at OSU succeeded often in spite of him.
And that illustrates perfectly the difference between the Ash start and the Schiano start. With schiano you could see progress being made week by week and there were many games where RU was undermanned but still played disciplined hard nose football for 60 minutes.
It's not just square pegs. A lot of these guys are still holding on to their old habits. The old way of doing things. Some may even be still loyal to Flood. I've said this before and I will say it again. The team will improve when the seniors graduate. Wait and see next year, when the team has less Flood players.
Oh really? I recall the 80-7 beat down by a 2-win WVU team coming AFTER the 61-0 thumping by Miami and 50-0 beat down by VT and was followed up by a 42-0 (at halftime) game vs Pitt. You are seriously delusional about Schiano's first year. They showed no sustained progress week after week until year three in 2003. There were some bright spots here and there where we were competitive for a half or so (Tennessee and Miami in 2002 for example) but still lost both games by a lot.

In August your're a loser/bad fan if you aren't playing up position groups and coaches.

saying person A's resume is equal to person B's, when they have the benefit of 8 more years of experience, is not exactly a compliment....
More yards, way more first downs, more time of possession, fewer penalties (only 4). The difference was 5 turnovers and the 4th downs. It was against a similarly bad team, so it hurts more than it otherwise would, particularly given the rest of the year. But with a deep breath and amoment to stop the angry yelling this isn't a game from which to make some sort of final conclusion that the coaches suck. The D was good. The O produced some. There should be serious refocus on keeping the ball off the ground. And keep recruiting.
