Post -VICTORY Silver Lining

Seriously, it wasn't pretty but we WON. This is a work in progress and Ash has them fighting their asses off. Still missing a QB that can take us to next level but you have to admire the fact that we just had BACK TO BACK BIG TEN WINS.

Don’t have to see any Ash-bashing “if Purdue can turn things around so fast why can’t we” posts from the resident “haters” for a day or two. Maybe.

[banana]:boxing:[cheers]
And also all the "we have no talent we need to give Ash a decade to turn it around" posts either.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

if we can’t play a normal football game against Michigan (losing by 8-10 td’s is not a normal football game), I’ll wonder if this team is intimidated by and afraid of the OSU’s and UM’s of the world.

Purdue is able to put up normal scores, we beat Purdue, we shouldn’t look like an FCS team on the big stage.

I’m an Ash guy, the horrible scores aren’t entirely his fault, but they also can’t be excused anymore either.

The last regime left Ash with an empty cupboard. Over the last four years, an entire class (23) players more than most teams were lost for various reasons. Depth is non existent on the D line in 2018 because we did a bad job recruiting.

Through 7 games we are much more competitive than last year. Ohio State is the exception, not the norm. They also blew out Maryland and Nebraska IN Lincoln. And they are totally capable of taking PSU to the woodshed next week in what will be a big revenge game in The Shoe. So yes, I will excuse that score vs the Buckeyes because they are still on a different planet than us. Let's see how we do the last five weeks. But I see improvement over last year.

No doubt we have improved, we’ve won two conference games and I love it. I’m just saying — time to play the sport of football against the big boys. Here’s to hoping we’re up to the task next week.

We're not the only team being taken to the shed by the big boys. Hopefully that will end in the not so distant future with the improvement in coaching, recruiting, and the establishment of a winning culture. Patience by the fan base will help tremendously.

maybe next year we have a lewis ,chatman qb battle. gio needs to slide...he 's not a great pocket passer.....looked like he had led in his ass today....we need him 100% healthy....typical hard headed italian....i know one when i see one

2017 may not be the season for this. Asking to make up a lot of ground in one year. Be competitive with and/or beat Maryland and Indiana. That's realistic expectations for the remainder of 2017.

After the game Brohm actually said he was too aggressive and should have been more conservative. I guess conservative can work...

I'm happy RU won, that's what counts for me.
I'm sure the nit-pickers will find something to nitpick about, that goes for the anti or Pro Ash factors.

QB is a problem but play calling is a bigger one. Force feeding the run into an 8 man box all day isn't the greatest strategy. The wheel route was there all day with LB's pressed up yet we only ran it twice. One time for a TD the other time wide open but Gio tripped. They found something in the pass game on the right side hitting complettions to Washington but never continued to exploit it. There were ways to attack this defense and anytime we found a little success they went away from those plays. It was very puzzling.

People forget that Ohio State beat Wisconsin 59-0 a few years ago.

People around here don’t pay attention or care about what good teams do the other good teams. There are blowouts, all the time, among top 10, top 15, top 25 teams. Ohio State has annihilated Nebraska each of the last two seasons but you wouldn’t know it around here. 64 - 3 and 56-14.

You don't think QB play is affecting the play calling?

I mean a wheel route is a simple throw. It's not like Gio was wildly inaccurate today. I'm not saying throw bombs but there are passes any decent QB can make. Why not feature the TE's even more, they were getting open. He barely missed on Washington down the sideline, but we never tried that again. We were able to beat their LB's on several completions and for a TD why not attack them even more. They were suspect in pass coverage, that was their weak link. Because they were playing so tight. We didn't. We went to the 2 yd. cloud of dust offense.

Gio completed 50% of his throws, that is not being accurate. He simply missed Blackshear on that wheel route in the first half, it should have a simple throw. He just does not pass the ball well.

I’ll volunteer to address this—

There are blowouts all of the time. My gripe is that since joining the B1G we pretty much get blown out every time against the top dogs. We had a thin team with less talent than many others — it’s a process and there is still a lot of patience to be had, I get it.

My point was this: Purdue doesn’t get there doors blown off every time, so why should we.

The response to that idea is astounding. I wasn’t trying to be negative; we won a pair of games, if we still play like an FCS team next week, I’ll wonder if it’s something more than talent and coaching like we’re still intimidated by the stage.

Haters are already trying to negative spin this with their pathetic worse win ever thread.

Defense and special teams looked good today. Offense was painful to watch at times as it was very limited due to injuries but still good enough for a win.

Honestly, last year there was a span where we were just hoping that we would not get shut out. Now you guys are starting threads complaining that we're not winning pretty enough. Wisconsin beat Purdue 17-9. They are the #5 team in the country.

And their two QB's completed 52% of their passes. But you didn't see Brohm shy away from the pass. Gio only threw the ball 18 times and he hit the next one for a TD. So your solution and Kill's is not to call passes against their weakness which was clearly their LB's because you might only get 50% of them? Instead run straight into an 8 man box for maybe two yds.

Ash did a nice job today, but that empty cupboard just beat two Big 10 teams.

Who won? They probably would have been better off running more.

Their percentage was hurt by drops.

Good start Nuts. Now for many of the usual suspects who thankfully didn't post here....did we win and were there any turnovers and did Gio protect the football? That's all that counts....the final score.

We had drops as well. I can think of two right off the bat Washington had one and Wormley. Each drop with only 18 attempts is worth 5 to 6% in completion percentage. Catch those two and Gio all of a sudden has a good game.
