For one, RU just finished the non conference mark 11-2...not many of us predicted that. Most of us had counted this SHU game as not winnable early in the year. Yet RU was in this game tonight until the final 3 minutes. What Pikiell has done in turning a program so bad that they had lost 40 of 47 games coming into this season is simply amazing and that is an understatement. He is teaching them how to win. They are doing it by buying in, hustling, rebounding, having a positive attitude, maintain focus, giving full effort, listening, being smart and all those other little things. And we saw all that tonight. Rutgers is competing again. I do not think there is going to be any games at the RAC where you say oh RU will have no chance to win this. Sure maybe some toughies on the road are not winnable but I would say anytime you have a team that buys in and competes so hard and has such strong coaching, its going to be fun watching this team play. Competing and winning is too different things...and the first step before winning against Big 10 competition you have to compete, its very hard to just jump from perennial losers to notching victories. Be happy with competing

I will briefly touch on the refs here....yes in general they were poor and I think RU was hosed on a couple of plays. It did not help RU's chances but its not why they lost this game. It didnt effect the outcome and I just cringe when people fall back on that easy reason to why the game went the way it did. I know this isnt a popular take by glancing at that other thread.

There are absolutely no moral victories. I saw that mentioned after the Miami loss and cringed so I hope I do not see it tonight. RU fought like hell tonight. I am extremely proud of tonight's effort for me. Despite the collapse in the last 8 minutes, I point to this game more than any other of Pikiell getting RU to play to their best of their abilities and this game shows that we have the right coach, its just that he needs a bit more talent. RU went toe to toe with SHU and looked like the better team in the first half. Credit Willard who made some adjustments and for the SHU players who stepped up like men in crunch time. Delgado is a stud. This is a team that has been there before. They experienced winning, they won a BE tourney championship, they made the NCAA tourney, RU winning only consisted of cupcakes. This challenge was just too much, the talent differential showed in the end. Its not a knock on RU. RU played as good as they could, just not our time right now.

To me my concern was translating the 11-1 start against cupcakes onto how RU would perform against better competition. With only one game against a top 100 team there just wasnt enough data, tonight we learned a little more. I saw Gettys got abused in the game thread and yes he flat out had a bad game but there is a reason he wasnt playing in the ACC, what CJ can do against Hartford, Niagara, and Stony Brook is alot different that what he can against a NCAA type team like SHU. So do not get down on him. Gettys is a pivotal reason why RU has 11 wins already. He will have some good games in league but I think we need to understand his limitation in what to expect against the Big 10. Likewise Freeman really struggled, you know the other game he struggled in...Miami. Saw some of the same problems..forcing inside against trees, rushing and missing shots. That happens when you go against better competition and bigger guys. RU guards played pretty solid offensively today but none of them are go to guys down the stretch. RU is missing that. RU is a flawed team.

So where does that leave us. Well its not all doom and gloom. I think what we saw tonight is that RU is going to bring it every night in the BIg 10. RU's effort tonight alone is good enough to beat some of the bottom Big 10 schools and Seton Hall is probably a 6th place type team in the Big 10. So RU will be playing a bunch of teams less talented than them in league. I have optimism that RU is going to be able to get 6 league wins. However the limitations we saw tonight..with Gettys, with Freeman, with getting outsized, with being lesser talented, and not having a go to guy, I think thats going to keep RU from taking that next step and getting to the post season even the NIT. However a goal of 6-12/17-14 seems to be a reasonable one to shoot for. I could be wrong too and we beat Wisconsin on the road and rev up expectations. I am not down on this team at all, in fact if tonight is an indication its going to be quite a pleasure to watch this team compete at the RAC. Thank you Pike and thank you players.

Very quickly, because in I'm Edison Ale House trying to get a beer, but your team is night and day from last year. Not the same thing at all. You'll steal a couple Big Ten games just on effort and heart, and you have enough talent on the court to make it legit. I was impressed with the fire your guys brought tonight.

They can win a few at home for sure. But, we need shooters. Corey did not play under control sufficiently this game (second half). Too many empty possessions on out of control plays.

We don't have a 3 point equalizer that's teams with lesser talent seem to have to keep games vs more talented teams close.

thank you...I was pretty shocked at how your board (well most of it) was dissing RU all week and pointing to that weak schedule. I really think your fans either hadnt been paying attention or something because some acted like RU is going 0-18 in the Big 10 and were stunned when I suggested RU could go 6-12 in the BIg 10

Congrats to SHU..after struggling, Willard seemed to get them fired up in the 2nd and the men took over. Better team won tonight but it was a great game to watch..well you guys probably hated it for 32 minutes but all that matters is to win

Great analysis BAC. Yes, we saw Gettys and Freeman basically disappear. Our guards (Corey and Nigel) overall were terrific. Williams, is Williams. The difference is they made their shots when it mattered and we didn't.

I do want to mention the officials. Normally, I never want to blame the officials for a loss, and we did not lose this game because of the officials. With that said, they made some HORRIBLE calls against us throughout the game especially that bald f_uck. So many times he was out of position and in crunch time he really sucked. But again, we did not lose this game because of the officials. We couldn't hit shots when it mattered.

Still, I am VERY EXCITED about this team the rest of the way and Pikiell's coaching ability. Not since Gary Waters have we seen a man who can flat out coach. And IMO, he is much, much better than Waters ever was, and he can recruit. His assistants are also top notch and I hope he can keep them for at least the next three + years. They're very good.

Can any of you imagine this team this year with EJ? We lose this game by 25. We were in this game until the final 3:30 where it all fell apart.

One last observation and it's a vent: Seeing that whore--Fred Hill on their bench disgusts me. I still can't believe he was given a HC job with us. The man is a slimy parasite who couldn't coach his way out of a corner. I guess Willard finds his ability to recruit a plus. But I would not listen to a damn thing the man says when it comes to coaching because he's CLUELESS. I still can't believe that it took us nearly 20 years to FINALLY hire a real coach. End vent.

One final point: It was obvious to me that SH had the shooters when it mattered and we didn't. That will change going forward. Gio Baker is a stud and our four star Center will be able to neutralize or at least slow down a player like Delgado in the future. Overall, it was a very well played game, although we had too many TO's that I'm sure Pikiell will address. I highly look forward to B1G play. I think we're going to be very tough to beat at home and may steal a couple on the road.

+1

Congrats to RU on a hard fought game. You gave us a tremendous scare. You guys played great defense in the first half. Delgado and Carrington, plus tough defense by Sonogo were the difference. Pykell had RU ready to play but Willard made good adjustments at half. Best of luck during the rest of the season.

Great post Bac. Spot on. Despite tonight's result, this is a program that is now in great hands. Talent-wise we had no business competing with the Hall tonight. Although I would say when Delgado was not on the floor, we were the better team - and not by a little.

Love this team and where we are headed. We need to pack the RAC and win some games in the B1G. I had to laugh when they showed both teams next 5 games which are in conference. SH has a joke if a schedule in what they believe is the best conference in the land. Providence twice and DePaul. Brutal.

I wasn't. There's still a way to go, but last year ( and the year before), Rutgers was just awful. No secret there, I don't think. But this year, and I l know the schedule was terrible, but they play with purpose. The defense is smothering, and the offense is so aggressive. They're not great, but these are a lot of the same kids who who an embarrassment last year. What a difference a coach makes.

I knew it wouldn't last forever, but the Jordan era is over. You have a coach and a team that plays with pride. You should be proud.

Agree seen shu a few times, they are a legit ncaa team. Delgado and carrington are studs. Rutgers is young and developing, the signs are great. Add 2 good players and watch out. Pike and staff have been amazing in such a short time.

Excellent recap of the game and the challenges facing this team moving forward, namely lack of inside scoring and a Douby type scorer that can take over the game during crunch time.Based on the first half performance this was a winnable game but Seton Hall's two star players Delgado and Carrington took over the game and Rutgers had no answers offensively or defensively.

Thanks. You guys have what it takes to not only play in the Tournament but make some real noise. BTW our coach's name is Pikiell.

I was very impressed with Pikiell's coaching tonite as I was 3 years back when he coached a great game for Stony Brook against Seton Hall in the post season N.I.T. , coming up short about 3 points at the Walsh sand box .

Wait til Pikiell gets his own players , then he'll own this rivalry against the man who can't sell his mother a Seton Hall scholarship .

I don't think we're either young or developing. We are who we are. We play with heart and will win a couple of games in the Big, when things fall our way. Aside from Corey and maybe Diallo( I would like to see much more), the rest of the team probably won't get better this year.

However, the program is developing. We're recruiting better players and, most importantly, the team is gaining an identity. They play tough D, run when they can, and don't quit. Those are great building blocks for a solid foundation.

agree with you, I am not sure how much better certain players can get. I think half of the team has a cap. I do think guys like Thiam, Omoruyi, Sa, and maybe Diallo can improve where they had a new dimension to either the offense or defense..these guys are key. I expect Sanders to keep improving in his decision making game by game which will help alot too

The team will win 4 big ten games and a chance at 6.

I do not see why not.

The challenge moving forward is finding enough scoring to reach at least 70 points per game .This team has a very small margin for error as seen tonight with a first half 9 point lead quickly disappearing because Rutgers couldn't score when Seton Hall went on a scoring run to take the lead.

I don't know about that. Thiam, Omoruyi are Freshman and will get better. Sa has athletic talent and will get better as he plays more. Laurent has the chance to develop also

Issa will improve, but I don't see it happening over the course of this year. If he develops a midrange game and dedicates himself to getting better on D, he can be an important contributor by his junior year.

Omoruyi looks like an offensively limited player. He can play D but he doesn't seem to have an instinct for positioning or low block shooting. Every team needs a defensively-minded big for stretches of games. I think he spends his college career in that role.

I like Sa. He's long and athletic, but not a slasher. There were two plays tonight where I saw his talent come through. The first was when he stole the ball from the SHU guard on the run back and the second when he drove to the basket from beyond the three point line. If he could develop a midrange game and dribble-drive more often, he may become a starting level SF. I just don't know if he has the skill-set to refine his game.

It is fun being excited about BBall again.

I think Laurent is a career deep bench player. I like his energy, but his skill set is too limited to ever be more in the BIG. The rest of the guys, I addressed in another post.

More than just a NCAA team.

Do you think we're more? I think our ceiling is NCAA team, maybe a first round win with a favorable opponent
I have to disagree with FIG. I think your lack of depth inside will really hurt you as the season goes along. Carrington and Delgado are fantastic but your bench is really limited. You guys will also have problems with long athletic bigs. I think SHU is a NIT team this year.

I think we win a few more B1G games than predicted.

Hoping we can compile at least 7 -11 record ...this year while starting the Arthur Murray Dance Class.

I have to disagree with FIG. I think your lack of depth inside will really hurt you as the season goes along. Carrington and Delgado are fantastic but your bench is really limited. You guys will also have problems with long athletic bigs. I think SHU is a NIT team this year.
I don't necessarily disagree.

Do you think we're more? I think our ceiling is NCAA team, maybe a first round win with a favorable opponent

very long, and athletic. better than last year. delgado is a beast. you held us to 6 OREB

FT could hold you back in a close tournament game

SHU:

Best of luck in Big East.

Liked the comments from Willard...winning graciously / Pikiell losing graciously.

RU showed heart....but we had no answer for Delgado or Carrington. Think Corey needs to develop a 3 point shot this summer....he's a play maker. Johnson was impressive too.

Wait till next year!

I don't necessarily disagree.
Why are you guys having so much trouble recruiting bigs? The SHU program that Willard has built is very solid. I'm surprised that, aside from Delgado, you haven't been able to recruit a next-level big man.

I wish I was as optimistic about this team as you, but I'll take it to heart.

Best of luck along the way... Make it a good win for us.

If I only knew...

This was my first look at RU's team this year. Pikiell clearly has them on the right path. They played with intensity and hustled like crazy. I saw little to none of that under the last several RU coaches. I think you guys made an excellnt call picking Pikiell.

FIG is usually pretty good on reading games but he blew this one big time. He said we would be no match and get beaten 74-49.
