The thread is pretty accurate....RU missed some makeable shots in the first half and should have had a much larger lead than 9 at half....SHU was just8-33 in the first half and not down by 14-15, it was only 9.
Basketball is 75% coaching and 25% talent/recruiting.....there are about 12-14 possessions a game, when the defensive team wins and the offense being run, isn't going to generate an open shot.....On those dozen possessions, the player has to have the overall skill-set or ability to beat their defender and generate a shot or get to the basket and draw fouls.....
As many of the RU pieces fit what we want to do defensively for the most part, the RU offense essentially comes down to Johnson and Sanders having that only ability to generate their own offense off the dribble. Mike Williams is a player that is best suited when the other guards are able to drive and kick to him, with space.....same with Thiam right now.....SHU has 4 players that can generate offense, one on one, against good defense.....those difference makers overcame RU's good defense.
SHU impressed me because they showed tonight they can rebound and get offensive rebounds....those extra possessions kept them in the game, so they could get extra fouls called against RU....they got to the double-bonus much quicker than they should have because of the ticky-tack calls, but they generated those calls.
Impressed by what I saw from RU tonight....RU could've used Thiam for about 12 -14 minutes and maybe he provides 4-6 points to make the final closer. But RU needs to get better players, period.....the missed layups by Freeman and Gettys are backbreaking type of plays, they could've stopped the bleeding or extended a lead early in the game. If you have a better or more consistent finisher, those sets Pikiell and the staff generated for these chances, can be converted with a better player inside.
There will be about 5-6 nights in the B1G, where those shots will fall....the only question is will the team get those efforts against some of the teams we can beat. The rest of the B1G season is essentially 18-19-20 Seton Hall type of games...... might as well find out what players are able to really develop against better competition and how does the team adjust to competition just like tonight for the B1G games.
