PSU Blogger on RU loss and their coach

Does Greg Schiano ever coach in the NFL if the Syracuse coach didn't get fired?

Did Gary Waters just get lucky with Douby?

How much of this stuff involves luck?

FWIW....Maryland is a very slight 2 point favorite at PSU tomorrow....not saying that means that much, but if you capture that win, the roller coaster continues....I don't think they're disciplined enough to get out on the shooters that Maryland has, but this is a winnable game for PSU, if they come out focused on both ends.

PSU's schedule is also loaded this year, they haven't played a softer schedule. I think the "won-loss" record is very deceptive (Pittsburgh has fallen apart, but that was at Prudential Center and Duke at MSG etc.)...This type of schedule is part of the development of the youth....I don't think he's getting canned in the next two seasons....Next year is truly "go-time", but they have pieces to get wins....

Also when looking at Chambers and Pikiell people need to respect the fact that recruiting doesn't happen overnight. The 1st 2-3 years are almost throw aways.
This isn't true in most cases, in fact not recruiting well for three recruiting cycles will almost certainly get a coach fired.

There are some very fine freshman players at PSU. They'd be making a mistake if they don't give him at least one more year to develop his freshmen and bring in another good class. Unfortunately for Chambers, if rumors of his firing continue it will hurt his recruiting.

To be fair to Penn state you have to look at their 2 game losing streak together. They take Indiana @ Indiana to 3 overtimes and lose. There is no doubt in my mind that penn state was tired against us.

Tonight is HUGE for the program.

I looked at Jay wright because I thought about us beating them when they had a young team. it took until Ray and Foye were juniors to have success.

Wright went forward and then backward for 2 years WITH Foye and Ray.

I know people are going to say chambers in year 6 vs. Wright in Year 3, but you have to give some acknowledgement to brand name Villanova vs. Penn state.

Having attended the basketball game today on Saturday I can provide some insight...

First, the Bryce Jordan Center is nice arena. Concessions are okay and price points for food were in line.

Second, the game drew less then 9k and the upper deck sections above both baskets had black drapes in front of them.

Third, I have said this to many Penn State friends of mine that for the program to be successful they need to recruit and win out players from inside Philadelphia. Chambers finally connected with the recruits from
Roman Catholic. They need to beat out the Nova's and Temple's for the city kids.

That is why Sandy Barbour, the PSU AD gave Chanbers a life line.

Lastly, Penn State has and always will be a football school. People will flock for wrestling, volleyball and now hockey. As for basketball, library time takes precedence.

Go RU!

Do those drapes still hang for wrestling and volleyball?

Penn State needs to get a grip. We are a very good team this year despite last season and have hung with the top teams in the league. Wisconsin, Maryland on the road, even Wisc on the road, etc and been in some tight ones. That game was about where I thought it would be (didn't expect us to have a 13-pt lead in the second half though). PSU is having a great year and will continue to go up. We're not the league pushovers anymore, they keep underestimating that.

Apples and Oranges.

Wright was hired at Villanova in 2001. His 2002 class had Randy Foye, Allen Ray, Jason Fraser, and Curtis Sumpter. His second class had Nardi and Sheridan. His third class had Lowry. He went to the NIT his first 3 years, then the NCAA tourney in 11 of the next 12 years.

Wright came out of the gate killing it on the recruiting trail and on the court as he worked his pieces in. Once he had a team of all his own talent, there was no question that Nova wasn't going to let him go anywhere.

Meanwhile, we're looking at Chambers' 6th full recruiting class on the court and a postseason record that includes a single year's participation in the CBI.

Much like Randy Edsall, though, I don't really want him going anywhere. I'd like to see him on the "hot seat" for another 2-3 years before PASt finally gives up on him.

I am guessing Chambers got the job April 2011. Shepp Garner and Payton Banks were 2 months removed from their Freshman HS season. I'd think this is about the time these 2 kids are starting to get recruited.

You can say 2012 was his 1st "true" class, but I disagree.

WHAT ABOUT Pikielll. Right now he is on an equal playing field building relationships with HS sophomores. He did attend a GSB game to look at a few sophomores. The one sophomore had already been recruited by colleges well before Pikiell was hired. The GSB sophomore will begin college 2019-20 and will be a college senior March 2023. This kid was being actively recruited before Pikiell was hired.

Based on what people say here you get ONE SHOT.

Change for change sake is bad.

Stability may be what RU needs more than anything right now... especially since we seem to have found a good coach and a quality staff. I'm very optimistic about this program.

PSU has just struggled at a little better level than Rutgers has struggled.

Have they ever been to a final four(I dont think the have)
Were they the only conference loss when Cuse won a national championship in the Waters years?
Have they sold out most home games ala the Waters years??
Do they have a RAC?(answer is,,NO!)

They know RU has them in their sights.....lets make it a YEARLY RUTGERS win !!

Yes. If we are going to let a coach go we have to be very confident in getting a guy better. Not a hope that the next guy is better.

Looking at coaching staff they definitely get positive marks with what they have done with the current talent. However objective analysis/grade of Pikiell is INCOMPLETE. As of 2/7/2017 we have ZERO evidence that he can recruit enough to succeed. We also have ZERO evidence that he can NOT recruit enough to succeed.

My hope is that the recruits, their families, coaches and handlers will recognize what we here are starting to see in coach P and his crew.

Luck and timing, among other things. I sometimes wonder where the football program would be had we gotten the B1G invite while Schiano was here. No matter how you feel he may have done, it couldn't have been worse than the past four years. Could it ?

this is the thing with him...what does he do for an encore...beat Michigan State, get blown out by 25, beat Maryland, lose at home to Rutgers...has to find consistency the rest of the year. On their best day they are capable. Lets see what happens

They have pieces. When you see 2 decent guys on bench in crunch time you know you have depth.

My stats say they defend.

Maryland on the other hand......not impressed!

it looks like they suffered a hangover from that crushing loss to Purdue. A pattern seems to be emerging in the Big 10...teams coming off of heartbreaking losses do terrible in the next game BUT go with them the following game as the bounce back.

The big loser in the game was all those empty seats.

Penn State isn't far ahead of us in terms of attractive coaching jobs.

terrible attendance by PSU tonight....ranked regional opponent and can't draw flies at a barbeque....I don't think Duke or North Carolina playing there would generate a sellout....
