All PSU tailgating questions here.....

Looking for some tailgating advice from our resident PSU lurkers. I will be visiting happy valley on Saturday with a group of RU and PSU fans. I had planned on bringing our TV and antenna but the antenna signal looks weak near the stadium. Anyone have experience with an antenna in the area?

You should be able to get NBC fairly easily. The rest will be hit or miss. I recommend a antenna with an amp if you want to get anything beyond nBC.

Are we allowed to use canopies in the yellow general lots? I have read conflicting information.
Thanks!

I can't think of anywhere that doesn't allow canopies, but I can't confirm. I'd be surprised if you ended up somewhere that didn't allow them, though.

Also, unless it's changed, it's $20 for a parking pass pre-game, but $40 if you get it day of. Just FYI.

We've never had a problem with canopies. I believe they might be listed among the prohibited items, but like most things in reality it's just a way for them to bother you if your tailgate gets out of control. Keep it close to your vehicle and not in the middle of where other cars need to drive, and there's a 99% chance you'll be fine.

Officially no. But they have not been enforcing it. You never know when they will.

Tents/Tarps/Canopies
Tents, canopies and tarps are not permitted in the Preferred, Yellow or Black parking areas.

Where tents are permitted, tent stakes or anchors
cannot be driven into the ground or pavement. Where allowed, tents/
tarps/canopies are not permitted in roadways, drive lanes or fire lanes.
(This hasn't been strictly enforced in the past but you never know when they will start)

Actions prohibited in parking areas:
Consumption of alcohol in the lots while the game is
in progress

Amplification of sounds (leave the dj equipment at home. never had problem with small radio)
➤ Behavior that interferes with other guests’ enjoyment of the
event, including threatening and abusive language, fighting,
kicking, wrestling, etc.
➤ Breaking the ground plane by driving stakes or anchors,
digging, trenching, etc.
➤ Distributing handbills or pamphlets
➤ Infringing on another guest’s area while tailgating.
This includes throwing of objects.
➤ Parking in a space or area designated as no parking or
reserved parking
➤ Picketing or political campaigning
➤ Possession and consumption of alcohol in parking areas
not in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth
➤ Saving parking places
➤ Solicitation, promotion, or sales unless authorized by
Intercollegiate Athletics prior to game day
Items prohibited in parking areas:
➤ Advertising banners or displays, balloons, tethered blimps
and other oversized inflatables (unless authorized by
Intercollegiate Athletics)
➤ Bicycles (except Police and EMS personnel), in-line skates,
scooters, skateboards, motorized bikes, motorized coolers,
or carts other than those used by disabled patrons
➤ Fires—Charcoal or wood fires of any type are prohibited
➤ For cooking purposes, the following residential scale cooking
and warming equipment is permissible with the following fuel

Any such tent blocking these areas must be immediately removed.

Just wanted to say hello to all our Rutgers guests that will be traveling to State College this weekend. Outside a couple drunk @$$-holes, you'll probably be treated very well. Regarding some of the previous comments, canopies are pretty common in the parking lots, I've never seen anyone have any issues with putting them up (as long as you don't block the aisles too much). If you happen to get into town on Friday, stop over at the Bryce Jordan Ticket office (basketball arena across the street from the stadium) and get a pre-paid parking pass, it will save you $20. Lots of parking right around the stadium. Just be respectful of others an you won't have any problems with the PSU fans.

Enjoy your trip and have a great time. Any other questions, let me know, I'll try to stop back sometime later and answer them.

How are the green lots next to the stadium? Are there any restrictions on how early you can arrive on game day? Also how is exiting after the game? Are we better off hanging out for a while to let traffic lighten up?

Looking at the graphic earlier in this thread, the green lot directly to the north of the stadium is grass; the one to the left is concrete. These are not only reserved lots, but reserved spots that require hefty donations, so you'll need the appropriate pass (obviously). I've only ever parked there for a Blue-White Game when everything's free.

Parking lots will open at 8 a.m.

The Green parking is typically reserved for the higher doners in the booster club, so unless you bought parking passes from someone selling them on the internet, those lots won't be available. The Yellow lots are for general admission (I've been a long time ticket holder and I park in the yellow lots). If you did happen to get a Green parking pass, then like pretty much every other lot, there can be a long wait getting out after the game, night games are particulary bad as everyone usually leaves at the same time. As far as arrival, the lots open at 8:00 AM so anythime after that is OK the get there.

Thanks. Our tailgate has a green pass so it doesn't sound like there will be many rutgers fans in that section.

Correct. You'll most likely be one of the few, but that shouldn't tarnish your experience. So, Penn State has general parking (yellow lots), preferred parking (tan, blue, orange), and reserved parking (red, purple, green pink). To have the option to purchase a spot in a reserved lot, one must make a donation of at least $2,500 annually, so your chances of being near students or hard-partying young alums are very small.

Sounds good to me. We are in the quality over quantity crowd and always represent RU with class.

Come early and walk the loop through campus and downtown. It's one of the best gameday atmosphere's you'll find. Students will be students, but the adults will be nothing but pleasant to all of you. Really is a great place to watch a game. Get in there about 730 to see the band and pregame. If you stay over, get up early and go the the waffle shop, it will be crowded.

Thanks for your help!! How do we know which yellow lots are grass and prohibit glass bottles? That doesn't apply to liquor bottles does it?

To the best of my knowledge all of the yellow lots - and certainly the ones closest to the stadium - are grass. That said, like the rules about canopies and no tailgating during the game, a responsible group of adults should have zero issues with glass. And if you're concerned, just pour your beverage of choice into a solo cup.

Definitely pour drinks into plastic cups and do not drink from glass. Leave it in your cooler/car etc. some cops will make you dump it if they see it sitting out.

The green lots are a lot more subdued, for better and/or for worse. That's where I tailgated as a student throughout college (some parents donated the dinero to be there and set it up for my house each week), and we never saw a single cop in our 4 years there (which made it great for drinking freshman/sophomore year). We were in the grass lot to the north, so we primarily used cans, but when we had bottles, nobody ever said anything. Also, you won't really run into any students there, which will likely be the only @$$-hats you run into.

Getting out of that grassy green lot after a night game is pretty horrific, though. Noon games are much easier, when people tailgate for various hours afterwards.
