From my perspective it will be very clear if Laviano was going to be named by the actions in game 1. If Flood brings him in the 2nd half, Laviano more than likely would have been named starter (unless Rettig struggles mightily in 1st half against Norfolk which aint happening). If he doesn't, the suspension had no bearing and it was Rettig's ball from the start.

My prediction? We don't see Laviano until much later in the year if at all.

I think Laviano will play the second half, regardless! Rettig would have to "light up the scoreboard" which would be highly unlikely since will run all over this team.
So, Laviano will play, he will do OK, and he will be named the Season starter next week. Bet on it! Flood wanted Laviano all along, he reminds him of Nova(his boy). Hopefully, he protects the ball better then Gary did.

With all Flood's statements and history of a long leash, it would appear he was going to start Laviano. If he was going to go with Rettig, he would have said that the suspension had no bearing so any cloud could be removed. He has not.

Glad we will get to see Rettig -at least in the first half. Just hope he doesn't get the Chas Dodd treatment (almost all handoffs so nothing good occurs in an attempt to not create calls for the qb). Really hope we get to see Rettig run the full offense.

With his rust, he needs it, and Ben M needs all the real game work he can get too.

Is it possible to go a complete half of football in 2015, and never put the ball in the air? We shall find out on Saturday.

No matter who was the pick, this is the game you would want to see how they both play in a real game. I see nothing wrong with using them almost equally (with the suspension, obvious how that would be done) and let them in there long enough so they can get a real feel for the game.

Given Rettig has never played a college game, he needs to play the entire Norfolk game to gain experience.

If he was going to be the starter going forward. he should get most of the snaps. Not sure if that is the case.

I agree. The way Flood is handling the reps and his statements since the suspensions all point to his already-made decision to give the job to Laviano.

Based only on a feeling, it appears Flood wanted to give Laviano the start for some reason. Rettig's play made that decision harder or Flood wouldn't have wanted to wait till the end to announce.

Flood's ideal situation may have been to get Laviano some minutes early in the season and work in Rettig if Laviano didn't grow into the role. The suspension foiled that plan and he may be hell bent on going back to it post first half. All signs point to that. We will see if he lets Rettig take the job as Flood indicated he would do with any starter.

Flood's stated plan was to have at least one more round of 'competition' / 'assessment' - but the suspension happened before that - and Rettig was then the designated QB for the start of the game - but since we are factoring in Flood's tendencies - I would say that Flood is inclined to finish what he started & he will now simply re-plot his path through the selection process utilizing the NSU game as a test platform - and it probably is all OK with him - as long as it does not turn the NSU game into a knucklebiter.

Don't see how you can start Rettig with an understaffed offense only to hand the reigns over in the second half to Laviano with the full offense. just makes no sense. as close as the completion was perhaps a half each would have been the answer previously but with the suspension it is Rettigs job to lose.

When was this one more round to occur--the suspension happened after the last scrimmage?

Carroo is the main difference between the first half and the second. The staff will take that into account, plus we are more likely to be conservative in the second half than the first.

I think this is going to be the case. In years past when playing the MEAC teams, Flood rarely lets the QBs sling it about. If so, all we'll know about Rettig in the first half is if he knows how to hand off the ball to a RB without fumbling.

It's Rettig's job. BUT Laviano has got to get 2nd half reps so that he will have current game experience just in case God Forbid anything happens to Hayden after he starts the second game. Can't put him in ,if needed, ice cold.
