QB Tidbits from Today's Presser-CL Will Be Starter-He Earned It

After initially saying, "I'm not going to talk about that,'' Ash proceeded to do just that, offering a vote of confidence while conceding that Laviano "has to perform better.''

"Chris is a guy that has been our quarterback and he's no different than another position,'' Ash said in response to an NJ Advance Media question Monday during his weekly press conference. "Every single day we go out to practice, we will evaluate his performance. And I'll just tell everybody: If we felt like there was somebody that could go out and play the game better than Chris and give us a chance to win, guess what? We'd be playing him.''

Ash continued: "Chris has earned the right to be our starting quarterback. Does that mean that he is exempt from being evaluated and potentially lose his job? No, it doesn't. But through the course of spring, summer training camp and what he does on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of practice, he's earned that right.

"Now does he still have to go out and perform? Absolutely he does. And we're not satisfied with the way that we have performed at the quarterback position this year in the first three games. But if we just go around and pull the hook on every player that struggles, does that mean we're necessarily going to put a player in there that gives us a better chance to win? I don't know. Sometimes you might, sometimes you might not.''

I have learned that Ash does alot of Coach speak..Oden wasnt even on depth chart and he played..
Allen was like fourth on chart..

"Whatever's best for the team needs to happen,'' Laviano said. "We have to play better offensively. It is what it is. They've got a job to do, I've got a job to do. ... He's kind of got to feel out what's best for the team and I gotta do what I gotta do to play better. It's not really that complicated.''

"I guess just executing as a whole offensively,'' Laviano said, when asked what he needs to do to perform better. "Just executing every single play better as an offense. We're getting better. We just need to work harder during the week, and minimize the mental mistakes.

"There's a lot of miscommunication on the offensive side of the ball that we need to figure out. It comes downs to simply throwing and catching the ball better.''

Ash said if they felt there was a QB who would give a better chance to win, he'd be starting. #Rutgers

Everything we knew walking into the season. Everything we know about our current situation = We don't have one QB on the roster.

Oden needs to see some serious snaps this season, eat and hit the weight room this off season; or we will be here September 19th 2017 reading

As long as they avoid putting him in situations where he'll be fodder for multiple Big Ten defensive linemen. At the same time. That's a way to lose him for the season or even his career.

If you can't take a few hits, you shouldn't be here. There is a reason there is a Div II and Div III.

Our QB recruiting must have been absolutely abysmal to be in this situation.

Chris must be head-&-shoulders better than anyone else at knowing the plays, formations, audibles, protections, & personnel groupings.

At least that's what I tell myself................

No question Laviano seems to get his edge by working hard in practice etc. That being said some of his bad techniques, habits and even in game decisions are not always that great. He still often throws off his back foot and his pass accuracy is often questionable. But if that's the best we have then that is what the staff is going with despite what some might think. Personally I would like to see us not start a first quarter in a hole and perhaps someone like Gio or whoever might be #2 in any given week get the opportunity to show what they can do in the 2nd quarter and with the first line and receivers.

Best quotes from Laviano I have seen. At least he understands the situation.

Sounds to me starting qb spot is based on what happens in practice. Practice is not a real game. We need someone who can practice well, and play well in a game. At this point I'd rather have the guy who steps up in a game, but might not be the best practice player of the bunch. Start Gio, he has already shown he can score.

Don't know many players if any that are bad in practice and good in games. Game speed is so much faster then practice speed.

Any future wins we get with Chris are gravy. It's clear this season is the teardown phase of a "teardown & rebuild" of our program. Contractor is just waiting on parts, and that always seems to take forever.

this is a rebuild year and soon Oden will be playing..I have a feeling Meheringer is not a big fan of Laviano either...
However, the fact that Ash was willing to burn Oden's redshirt is telling. He is going to play more.

"We had conversations throughout training camp, what are we going to do with Tylin and as he's continued to improve and progress," Ash said. "He's a guy that fits our offense and when we get the opportunity to get him in there, we're going to get him in there."

If we ever hope to get defenses to stop putting eight in the box, we NEED to find a way to throw the ball; at the very least need to show that we CAN throw the ball.

I don't know what Rettig's "issues" are, but he is the best passer on the team (I think most on here would agree.) Now if he hasn't earned playing time, fine, but I wish they could find a way to get him some time in the game just to keep the defenses honest.

I'm about to be labeled a "Rettig-tard", but its not about Rettig in particular, I just want to be able to have the opponent worried about a passing game. A power spread is only as effective if it is not one dimensional; to this point, we are exactly that.

Just win baby. I don't care how.
