Why does everybody assume HR will be our starting QB? Just because he was highly ranked recruit everyone has made him the starter, completely ignoring Chris... I think Laviano has a ton of potential and I would be super pumped if he led the team on Saturdays, but everybody seems so down on him, why?

Well from the practice report theyrw both at the same level mentally.

But from the reports HR has the greater skill set physically. What he does with it on the field is yet to be determined.

Maybe because when he played he didn't go 20-21 with 400 yards and 5 TDs like fans of all teams expect from their backup QB lol.

Not the reports I read. The reports I've read said Laviano has been ahead so far, probably because of experience running the offense.

Are these reports available to the pubic? Care to share a link? Thanks.

I dont think "everybody" is assuming that, the majority of us are in a wait and see pattern right now.

Do you realize you answered your own question? "Just because he was highly ranked recruit everyone has made him the starter...". Yes, in an open competition for the starting job, it is reasonable to assume the player who many believe is the most talented would win the job. Assuming that Rettig will be the starter doesn't mean you are down on Laviano, it just means that you are assuming the more physically gifted player will win the job.

I assume Rettig will win the job. That doesn't mean I am going to be disappointed if Laviano wins the starting job. I will be disappointed only if Rettig performs poorly and loses the job more than Laviano wins it (and vice-verse)

In the comments on one of the Spring practice stories, Duggan (yeah, him), had this to say about Rettig: "I wouldn't overreact to three spring practices, but he hasn't blown me
away. Let's see where things stand after a few more practices and a
scrimmage."

It is WAY too soon to make a determination. They are still rotating 3 players to determine who will play center.

You realize that there have only been four practices and it was not until the last day they even were working on third downs?

Laviano has the advantage with being the backup last season and actually getting some game snaps. This will not be decided, in my opinion, until well into the Summer practices. It may well end up still kind of undecided and Flood may switch one out for the other if some really bad things are happening.

Keep in mind that we may well have a seriously good running attack with the stable of RB's we have. If our O-line jells, the QB will be handing the ball off a lot more than throwing it. And, the throws may well be what should be easier for them...shorter and safer throws.

Actually, ESPN had Rettig and Laviano both rated 4 stars and Laviano rated higher when they came out of HS. Rivals certainly doesn't have a monopoly on recruiting projections. There is probably more hype with Rettig because he signed with LSU. We'll see how it shakes out. Playing QB is a lot more than throwing the ball in controlled situations. Who is going to have the mental and physical toughness, make the right reads, who is going to lead when things aren't going well? That, in the end will decide who eventually becomes entrenched as starting QB.

Yeah, but I was unimpressed with his passing in what was admittedly limited action last Fall...average arm at best and accuracy was nonexistent. I can't wait to see them both in the Spring game.
BTW, don't sleep on Giovanni Rescigno. He's got a shot.

Very silly comment by Duggan with the team not even wearing pads at that point after 3 practices. Geez, all of his passes were not perfect? Did Nova blow you away after 3 spring practices Dan? LOL

Hacksaw can be a funny guy sometimes.

The rep coming in was Rettig had a big arm....If Duggan not blown away means average arm? Hard to believe not more talk about QB's in general. If a reference point was Nova's arm does that mean none of QB's can match Nova's arm strength?

In watching Laviano when he played last year, he isn't in the same neighborhood as Nova's arm strength. Closer to Dodd than to Nova. That said, he moved extremely well back there and looked like a guy who could be patient and not hurt the team trying to force balls that shouldn't be thrown.

Rettig has an arm closer to Nova's. You can just see it in HS. But there's a lot more that goes into it than that as someone else mentioned so, we'll see.

Nova had a great season last year after three years of playing. To my eye, Laviano looked a lot more mature than Nova was in his first games but the arm strength worries me. DB's close so fast at this level and the ball can't have much air under it unless it's perfectly placed and that's not something you want to rely on.

Totally off base on Lavianos arm strength. In a conversation I had with an RU coach..
His comment to me on Laviano was. "Big Arm"!

It's been 3 or 4 practices so far, let it play out and may the best man win. Just because someone had an LSU offer doesn't mean they are better than a kid that committed to RU. I graduated from NJIT and my 1st job I was competing with kids from Stanford, Cornell, MIT and still got the job. All you need is an opportunity and may the best man win. Yea, Rettig seems like the shiny new toy but you don't know what you have in Laviano. Got to give everyone a fair shake and the best man win. It doesn't matter that you came from LSU or wherever, it's how you perform.

I'm no expert by any means but I've been saying here that no one should expect Rettig to step in and wow people from day one. He hasn't played in a game since 2012. He's been a scout team QB for two schools the past 2 years. He hasn't had nearly the practice time Laviano had even as limited as that was as Nova's back up.

I don't know who the winner of the QB derby will be but you have to give this some time.

I'm just glad we have a stable of QBs back there who can compete for the position - and what appears to be quality depth. Looking forward to seeing who breaks away in the summer practices.

Agreed! This year there will be more than one QB in the stable that at this point "looks" like they can play.

Attached Asbury Press article says Carroo spent a lot of off time building relationships with Rettig and Laviano.

What if Gio beats them both out? No passes to Carroo?

Carroo

Maybe its because we saw Laviano play already and had an unimpressive arm? Maybe it's because Mohamed Sanu (oh you know, the NFL receiver) said that Rettig was awesome and had incredible potential? Maybe because Rettig's older brother was a college stud who made an NFL squad? Im sure the Army All-American thing doesnt hurt either. Look no one is predicting the future. We have a legit QB battle here and anyone can win. But its no surprise why people are high in Rettig's obvious upside.

I just don't get why people are so caught up with experience at this level. This isnt the pros. Redshirt freshmen win starting jobs and succeed every 5 seconds. Hell, Savage took us to 9-4 as a true frosh.

A very small data point. A little larger data point is that he was Only 11 of 28 passing and he appeared to not be very accurate with receivers that were not standing still.

I think that people saw enough of him last year to hope that there has to be someone better because he has not shown in that small sample size to be even close to as good as Nova.

One of the mods had a post a couple of weeks ago that said that Rettig had the strongest arm of all of QB by far , and that included Nova also. Why try to assign a meaning to Duggan's statement other than what he said?
