RAPID REACTION - Indiana

Thank you - yea you guys realize for a player to get an assist, the person he passes the ball to has to make a basket right? 0-10 from 3 main rotation guys, = 0 assists, imagine that. Passing the ball to Dercack is a black hole at this point. Ace cant pass the ball to himself
Maybe we could track Brick Assists

They did turn into a disgrace. Literally. In front of our eyes.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

We stand and watch when an opponent shoots. We run fast breaks with more errors than a middle school team. And we can't draw up an effective play ... not even by mistake.

If that's not a disgrace, what do you call it???????
So the staff all of a sudden in 1 year forgot to coach?

Maybe, just maybe, it is the current makeup of the team.

Martini, Hayes and Derkack are out of their league. Pike's recruitment of them is a FAIL. His inability to work the transfer portal to get B10 level players has probably destroyed this once promising season.
This is the crux of the matter. In hindsight, it would've been far better to bring in 3 underrecruited hardworking defensive specialist types, which I imagine would've been available, rather than going for offense, as these 3 guys are terrible on offense anyway and ridiculously bad on defense. Maybe we could've been better with the lottery picks and great D from the rest of the team.

Because Lathan Somerville has probably worked very hard being a good free throw shooter and the results show with him making over 80% on the season. Let's choose the guy at 60% who was just 1-8 in the last game.

How does that make the team feel? Pissed me off as a fan, I can't imagine if I was Lathan. Pike can yell and scream at everyone on the roster not named Ace. He can give free points to Ace either because he needs Ace to have more scoring to sell more cards or he is afraid that Ace will be mad.

What do you think was going through Lathan and PJ's head when he chose Ace? Do you think they were OK with it?

What are fellow players thinking when Ace is celebrating making a 3 down 12 with 2 minutes left or joking and laughing and giddy with 40 seconds left OR joking with Knight and the other guy with 1 minutes left while the other 4 guys are listening to what Pike said in the huddle.

All this sh!t is toxic.
The Ace giggling and laughing thing while losing pissed me off a bit, and I mentioned it in the game thread. Most other fans thought it was fine. I don't think it's toxic, I honestly don't think most players care enough for it to be toxic.

I don't have an issue with the end result of 0 assists, my point when I mentioned it was I can only remember one instance where there was a possibility of an assist. Jwill butchered that one after a good 2nd quick pass by passing up a wide open three and instead drove and turned it over.

The reality is winning or losing just isn't that important to him. Who the fvck makes a 3 with a minute left down 12 and celebrates....seriously?

1. This game was lost when Dylan Harper got sick. Yes, Indiana was also without its best player (Reneau), but Dylan means WAY more to Rutgers than Reneau means to Indiana.

2. It was basically 1 on 5 with Ace Bailey carrying Rutgers and the rest of the Keystone Kops bumbling and fumbling their way. Ace was Clown Shoes tonight, but it didn’t matter. 39 points on 16-29 (4-8 from deep), plus 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Just wow. (Side note: Why is Ace so bad at the line?!)

3. Of course Indiana shot well from deep tonight against Rutgers. Of course. 12-27 (44.4%) for a 30.8% team? Are you kidding me? We actually held them to 28-72 (39%) overall, but they hit threes and were able to push the lead. That stupid 40-foot heave that banked in at the halftime buzzer was a killer. Would’ve been a 4-pt halftime lead instead of 7. Makes a difference.

4. Oumar Ballo was a one-man wrecking crew on the boards (12 rebounds, including 7 on the offensive glass) and in defending the rim. He is like a vacuum cleaner when he gets anywhere near a rebound.

5. We got DESTROYED on the defensive glass tonight, giving up almost 20 offensive rebounds and 34 second chance points.

6. Martini, Hayes, and Derkack shot 0-10 from the field tonight, including 0-7 from 3-pt range. Look no further as to why our offense stalls out when Dylan and Ace aren’t scoring. Complete and utter dog crap from these portal additions.

7. 14-23 (61%) on FTs, but also missed a couple of front ends, just not helping the cause.

8. The season is not over from a technical standpoint, but it’s on life support. The real takeaway here is that the same deficiencies that we’ve seen all year — defense, rebounding, and third/fourth scoring options — are not getting better, and there’s very little hope that any of it will get better. Viewed in that lens, the season is very likely dead in the water.
As for No. 3 - RU is the cure for any team with 3-point shooting woes. We simply do not defend the three and let teams get way too comfortable from the arc. And then, presictably their shots start falling. Very sad to see the same failures game after game - poor defense and poor rebounding. Clearly Pike knows how to coach both of those things, but he has completely failed to hold this team accountable and get them to listen to him. Maybe in the NIL/Transfer portal era the game is passing him by?

The tech.
While %'s dictate someone other than Ace taking them, I think there's another way to look at the decision.

There was one chance of winning the way our team was shooting & it was going to require Ace to magically deliver a W. Why not give your projected NBA lottery pick(who was the only one scoring) a chance to put the team on his back and will us to victory? He missed the shots, but giving a lottery pick a chance to do make 2 clutch free throws is not that Crazy.

It didn't pan out, but in future we know Dylan will get the call over Ace - or maybe the 80%ers.

Didnt Ace steal the ball for a layup on the inbound after the misses..it ended up with 2 points anyhow

He's not completely wrong though. Ace took 30 shots, was double and triple teamed and didn't finish with a single assist. That's very hard to do. I can't even think of more than one instance where he could have had one if everyone else wasn't inept.
At some point he realized he was the only one that could make a shot, I don't blame him for that, his FT shooting though is bad.

Ace is a great scorer and not a great player. Great players make others around them better. Being constantly double teamed and having 0 assists sounds almost impossible. And Sommerville is selfish?
Ace’s role isn’t to make other players better. He’s a volume scorer. That’s the type of player he was in high school, it’s the type of player he’s going to be at the next level too. You give him the ball and ask him to go get you a bucket.

Ace isn’t suddenly going to become a different player because Dylan couldn’t play last night. He did the thing we brought him here to do, which is score a lot of points with decent efficiency.

We had to play zone. A defense we never play because of Ace (and a lessser extent Sommerville).
We don’t play zone because of ACE except to give him a breather , we play zone because our guards , Jeremiah , JMike , Jordan , Acuff cannot keep any guard in front of them and stop the penetration and PJ and Martini are worse at it as wings. Pike has to play some zone but preferably constantly change up defenses because his man to man defense sucks. Stop your hate fest on ACE. If you thought he was the problem last night , you need to be checked into a hospital because one of his 4 blocks hit you on the head.

We haven't played this much zone since Pike has been here. We have had plenty of guards that couldn't stay in front of dribble penetration.

I don't think Ace was a problem on D, I know it.

Previous years we had Myles and Cliff protecting the rim. This year we do don't have that and help rotations stink

You're obsessed with Ace, but he wasn't guarding the guys who killed us. It was Rice and Ballo

Giving up 34 second chance points was the main issue we lost. You pinning it on ACE . LOL.
Your following post is finally acknowledging the key issue not having a shot blocker which is a huge issue. But ACE is doing something with his blocks.
You claim we had guards allow dribble penetration in the past and although it happened rarely with Geo , Caleb , Paul , Jacob , they also locked you down causing shot clock violations. This team is incapable of causing them. The man to man defense by our guards and wings who are the supporting cast has been atrocious in mostly all the games. You cannot ignore that and place your anger at ACE. It is not becoming of you.

Really watch the game when indiana has the ball and focus on Ace....get back to me with the results. TRUST me he killed us in the 1st half defensively.

Paul had very poor lateral quickness and routinely got beat off the dribble.

Coaching lacking fundamentals for this team and no accountability when a player isntt producing.

Also sub management is still time based rather than on flow of game. Ace was on fire and we were up 7 and he takes him out. IU goes on a massive run at that point. These are kids…they can play through being winded.

Some players on our team need to be permanently benched. Again no accountability.

I liked that we played zone tonight and just another team who shot their career night at 3. If they shot their average we win this game
Ace played 38 minutes last night as the main focus of the offense. He was taken out at the proper time in the first half, it maximized his time on the bench and minimized his loss of game time. We still had the lead when he returned, it is coaching 101.

With all due respect, are you insane? Ace “went off” in the FIRST half when we were still in the game. He had 19 of our 34 points in the first half. You make it seem like he scored 39 points in garbage time after we went down by 20 points or something, as if they were all meaningless stat-stuffer empty points.

Of all the things to complain about tonight, complaining about the guy who scored half of our points is, yeah, downright insane.

All due respect…
He ALWAYS plays the contrarian.

If only they had left him in, Ace might have stayed hot. Could've put up 39 points. If only..
Or extended the lead even further and not let them back into the game in the first half.

Putting the game out of reach early .

Having them fight from a double digit deficit in the second half .

The larger point was you don’t pull a player who has made 5 consecutive shots and the team is on a 14-2 run.

The sad thing is that if a few of the others players had a decent game, we would have won even without Dylan.
The portal Trio were terrible with Martini leading the party. On one 3 attempt he missed the rim by at least 5 feet.
Sad- Williams" game has gone downhill- actually Davis and Somerville played a little better.
One point about the game is Ballo elbowed and banged his way to the basket numerous times without one offensive foul called against him and on at least a few occasions he camped out in the paint without a 3 second call.

If anything, Ace didn’t shoot enough, because no one else could hit the side of a barn . . .

Ace will be an incredible player and already has incredible talent. He probably needs to score close to this for us to win. However, unlike Dylan, he doesn’t make other players better. Neither does Pike anymore for that matter.
He doesn’t make the players better because they aren’t any good. People were telling us this before the season started, but we didn’t want to listen. National commentators like Rothstein and NBA scouts who had the chance to watch us in practice said the supporting cast was not good. Just by comparison, Cooper Flagg has has an up and down season, certainly shining in some games, but also others where his shooting is off or he struggles with turnovers. But his is still the best player on the #4 ranked team in the country, the difference between him and Ace is that he plays with a much better supporting cast.
