RAPID REACTION - Seton Hall

Hey GreenRiceFig, RUInsanity, Fluoxine, Go RU 7. I accept your humble apologies. Your posts didn’t age well.

Free throw shooting once again a huge issue.
In proper context it’s a major problem.
It almost cost us two games in a row.
It cost us Kennesaw.
Horrible against Wagner.

Pike better have them at the RAC every day shooting foul shots.
You don't get better at foul shots by mere hours of practice. You get better when a coach who can see the flaws in your approach gives you immediate feedback, and you adjust and practice correctly. Apparently, the RU coaching staff has no one to provide that feedback.

That would be a complete and utter waste of valuable practice time.

Ace and Dylan and Dercack have no problem making FT at practice. You can NOT simulate a game scenario in practice other than maybe at the end of practice missing FT means a suicide (touch ups to be PC)

Shaheen allowing Dylan to catch the inbounds pass and bring the ball up court was one of the worse coaching decisions I have seen in a long time.

You have to force someone else to bring the ball up with under 7 seconds to play. Terrible coaching job there.
Out of a time out too

Well up to the coaches to simulate game scenarios or change up how they are doing it because it’s not working. It is definitely in the top 15 issues. Three games now atrocious foul shooting and bad misses Kennesaw. Fans were happy barely in the Top Third of the nation. Skewered by one game Dylan shot exceptionally well or we would be even worse.

The coaching staff has put players in position to succeed, it is up to the players to execute....that means if there's an opportunity to try and split a double team (Harper) and it becomes a turnover, the player can try it a 2nd or 3rd time, but the coach cannot tell an offensive weapon to not attack.

For all the RU fans who want to stop complaining about talent, the talent was on full display today. It wasn't pretty and foul shooting prevented a 10 to 13 point win.

The 1st half and start with Ogbole and Martini didn't help and the 2nd half with Ogbole put RU in a bigger hole. It wasn't until Sommerville entered the game that things tightened up on the defensive end.

Give credit fto Seton Hall, who clearly planned out the offensive sets to counter their guards getting shut off from getting downhill for layups. The passes over the top was well executed and kept them in the game (along with the banked 3 pointer).....on the surface, SHU has decent pieces to work with, being under .500 with as many options as they have, brings coaching into question with Holloway.

I can't see how RU escapes better competition without Sommerville getting more touches on offense. Sommerville on the floor with Hayes or Acuff appears to be the tandem that can provide a lot more offense.

RU learned a valuable lesson after an emotional win vs a talented PSU, that playing down to an opponent that hasn't been playing well, is dangerous.

Gotta figure some 2026 and 2027 recruits will be looking at the environment today and seeing a program building on some momentum.

Princeton will be well prepared, but RU should attack them by driving and get them in foul trouble and make their FTs.

If I recall, your point was something like that RU needs to be a Top 50 FT shooting team to make the tourney. I pointed out that at the time that would mean RU would need to have made an extra 2.6 FTs per 100 which would equate to 0.15 points per game. I also pointed out that perhaps half of the teams in the top 50 FT% are probably not tourney teams. Pretty much every team struggles at times in games. RU struggled today and it kept SHU in the game.....but you still have to look at it from a macro perspective as the season continues to progress. Case in point.....Baily was 1-8 in FT today which greatly impacted the overall team %. Sine you appear to only focus on single games as a statement for your stats.... are you projecting that means he will always shoot FTs at a 0.125 clip?

It's a long season, I would wait to see what happens before seeking apologies.
Your recall would be wrong. Never suggested any such thing. Barely being in the Top third in the country in foul shooting isn’t good enough. It’s a problem.
Thats now three horrendous games foul shooting. Although statistically we shot foul shots okay against Kennesaw, missed crucial foul shots cost us the game.

It’s a long season but already cost us a ton of wear and tear we don’t need which should have been two far easier wins.
Apologies are indeed appropriate.

Rutgers has not been a good foul shooting team, in a long while. Coaching ? Practice?

You still have no idea what you are talking about. The fact that you think one single game could ever prove your point illustrates why you will never understand what you are talking about.

What does #3 mean then?

1. 73% isn’t good.
2. It was supposed to be a strength this year.
It hasn’t been.
3. That’s not NCAA Tourney good.

Looks like we are heavily dependent on two players. Sustainable? Not sure. Seatbelt on.
Not sustainable. Pike did poorly in constructing the supporting cast. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an amazing team, and Pike blew it.

there is no way this is sustainable...things have a way of being even. RU is 3-4 vs real teams and 6 of them down to the wire with a no show thrown in there...you are what you are

My two cents:

1) I know some people don’t like Dercack driving, but the guy definitely draws a lot of fouls. Besides Dylan, he averages the most free throws. I know we have been missing free throws, but conventionally speaking, that’s a good thing. Free throws and fouling people out. Though for a former conference defensive player of the year, his defense is lacking and lazy at times. When the SHU player made their last made three, Dercack just put his hand up, but nowhere close to their face. Hence he sat after that for the rest of the game.

2) With Dylan’s (& other’s) driving ability, we BADLY need a shooter to take advantage of it. Even MJ/Pippen had their Steve Kerr & Toni Kukoc to cash in. As good as Dylan is with ISO and for the most part, it has paid off, he needs to keep the defense honest, trust his teammates, and kick out at least 1-2 times a game. Not asking all the time, but a couple of open threes each game could be the difference maker. PJ’s one and only shot today was confident and I was hoping for more of that today.

3) JWill, I have no idea what to make of him. He does all the little things right, but when he holds the ball for 3-5 seconds and then decides to try to take someone off the dribble, it’s not gonna work. He needs his shots in the flow of the offense.

4) Ace single handedly kept us in the game in the first half. We need to get him the ball in the post. Then he can work his magic, whether it’s fadeaways, drives, dribble-jump shots. And if he gets double-teamed, guess what, kick out for a three point shooter. So much potential for shooters, if we gave it a chance. PJ & Acuff spot up shots especially.

5) Big Men: EO is big and probably can’t be moved off his spot, but he’s not explosive enough. He needs to utilize positioning, if he can’t rise above. Probably same with Lathan, but he’s a freshman, so I give him somewhat of a pass.

6) I don’t know why we suck so bad with foul shots at home. It’s almost gotten to their heads with each groan of the home crowd. Sports psychology has always been an issue with RU teams for some reason and this team is no different. Though on a separate note, I’m glad we started using a bass drum instead just solely the snare drum before a foul shot. Snare drums by themselves are irritating and not calming or helpful.

We are 3-3 in close games, seems like things are pretty even already?

We can't continue to have Ace play 38 minutes and Harper play 34 minutes each game. Pike did a great job utilizing TV and regular time outs to give each a break. Fortunately Harper gets better in the 2nd half (and would have played more than 34 minutes if it wasn't for early foul trouble). Need help from the other players. If not, Ace and Harper are forced into more ISO's and more time on the floor. Defense especially pick and rolls, backdoor cuts need a lot of work especially with Princeton coming up.

And don’t chant Dylan’s name before foul shots please. Never thrilled with clapping pre foul shots.

We don’t shoot foul shots well at the RAC

We tried that though. We’d put up 90 but then give up 95. Only thing I disagree with as far as minutes is that J Mike plays way too many mins. He also should not be playing at the end of halves when we’re shooting free throws. He’s very consistent in being awful from the line.
JMike minutes need to be drastically cut. And Derkack needs to stop taking threes!

Good post. But @AreYouNUTS is going to flip when he sees what's in bold - his head nearly exploded over the drums playing before FTs, lol.

It's NO secret how I feel about this nonsense and: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

on the season:

Away: 92/115 for 80%
Home: 99/154 for 64% (last 2 games 27/53 for 51%)...THIS IS PATHETIC!!!!

DEAR BAND PEOPLE: STOP THIS SHIT IMMEDIATELY!!!!

*** also I have been saying, for years now, that our entire athletic department needs a sports shrink (for a slew of reasons)

You know SHU wanted to posterize some of their dunks today but guarantee Dylan cork screwing that defender all the way up the court will be high lite of film session.
So weird....I thought we were gonna have a "dunk-a-thon" team this season but it's been the exact opposite thus far. I think ECCC out-dunked us 7 to 1 today (and a couple were pretty impressive *puke*).
