A 1000 post trial period would do it. New posters can’t start threads until 1000 posts. And their first 100 posts remain invisible until reviewed by a mod before becoming visible to the rest of us.

If, during the trial period, they post political shit outside the CE forum, including having it in their signature tag lines, they get banned. If they behave trollishly, like the clown that was stalking ‘Nut’s, before they reach 1000 posts, ban ‘em.

Once people reach 1000 posts of well-behaved contributions to the community, then we can assume they’re okay and they can misbehave some like we all do now and again.

This works well, in practice, because problem people are almost always incapable of getting anywhere close to 1000 posts without revealing their true intent; their illness.

Is not my invention. A number of forums I’ve participated in over the years have done some version of that. It generally seems to lead to thriving online communities of participants who can self-moderate and avoids the people who just want to burn everything down.

It easily stops the folks who get banned and instantly create a new account with a new IP address (typically using VPNs).

You brought up rice speaking to current players . Yet, you blatantly ignored the question I asked about those speaking engagements
you mean: "does his speech to the ravens players tell them not to get drunk or take whatever the supplements he was on at the time? "

I guess you think this doesn't address that question
"Drinking and roids are probably part of the speeches he gives warns the players to avoid in his talks to the players."
( maybe you chose to ignore that and claim I didn't answer your question. )

Since I haven't been to one of Ray's meeting with players I can only guess ( probably is the key word) what he talks about.
You can guess anything you like and keep on implying Rice haven't changed and is doing nothing to try to keep others from acting the way he did in the elevator.
Everything points towards Ray Rice changing himself into a better person, you can chose to think differently, but don't try to act like I ignored what you asked because you didn't like the answer , or prove my guess was wrong.
Disagree all you want, but don't claim I "blatantly ignored the question" you asked.
I feel that type of claim was a bit dishonest

edited to add ( just to show my guess about what he said in his speeches is " probably" right)
>Rice, who was indefinitely suspended and released in 2014 for punching his now-wife Janay in an Atlantic City elevator. Rice never played again.

Since then, Rice has taken ownership of his life. The reality quickly set in for Rice that he has a wife and two children. While noting that his wife is independent and he doesn't speak for her -- Rice said, "We both found out who we were and what our future is going to be."

He feels like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders by not being in the NFL spotlight. And he's dedicating himself to making sure others make better decisions than he did.

He's spoken to football teams at Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame and several other top schools. He spoke at the Big 12 Seminar and the NFL Players Association rookie program. He's appeared in front of the Bucs, Raiders and yes, the Ravens.

He's worked with and learned from organizations like A Call to Men and the Childhood Domestic Violence Association.

"You can check my body of work," Rice said. "The most humbling piece for me is peer-to-peer, being able to speak to colleges and different teams and give them my life story without making excuses."<

agree or disagree, but don't say I didn't address what you asked for

I don’t know we are disagreeing with . I did not see your statement about drinking and roids ! Sorry
I hope he talks about drinking , supplements and playing a very violent game and how that may affect your personal life .
The guy was a great player . He fuc*ed up royally. Good for him he seems to be doing well now . But I don’t need to celebrate the guy

think it's great how he changed things around and he and his wife put the past behind them. I also think it's great that he can move forward, has done amazing things and believe he has paid for this and made the best of his mistake/happenings. Only his wife and he know if he's changed from this 'one time' incident. Not my business as she has apparently forgiven him and all that.

that said, not a good move imho and would not support RU doing this.
I agree - it seems he has turned things around and is going in the right direction. Maybe it’s a shame that one of the worst moments of his life was filmed , he was blackballed because of it and had major fallout. But then again maybe in the big picture it was the best thing that could have happened to him. Actions have repercussions and just think a situation like this bars you from being in any teams HOF/Ring of Honor. Doesn’t mean he can’t be a great and positive influence to others, but again bad look IMO to put someone like this in your highest honor.

pin this!

He really is a sad lib.

Pretty crazy to see how many of them there are in this board, I only realized these last few days.

I am considering releasing a list of board libs (based off woke comments made) as a separate thread so that the wokesters in this fan base are exposed.

Oh no! A list?

The only person that's been exposed is you moron.

I would agree, if Ray hadn't changed into the person he is today ( going by what's been written about him) and the Ravens seemingly feeling success on the field outweighs character flaws when they induct a former players in their ring of honor.

Look at the Pro Football Hall of Fame and you'll see some there with flaws
The MLB HOF is supposed to keep unsavory players like Shoeless Joe Jackson, Pete Rose and the steroid crowd out, but they have inducted some baseball greats that weren't so great outside of the game.

I look at Baltimore's Ring of Honor inducement qualification more of how the person helped the team when playing and anything outside the game just glanced over
Because there is already a BROH member that abused and another one that supposedly withheld information regarding the murder of two people in a fight between the group the future ring of honor member was with and some other people ( he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice) some people he was with were accused of doing but acquitted.

I guess I'm just saying awards and honors like this ring of honor really have a low bar set for character flaws and we shouldn't make the high bar we set keep Ray out, especially since he's trying to be a better person than he was along with trying to keep others from becoming what he was.

That would be an impossible task for the MODs... much easier to just start dealing with the abusers with some bans.
There could have been 5-6 in this thread alone..and given to posters with FAR more than 1000 posts.

It's not impossible at all and, like I said, other websites out there use that approach. There just aren't so many new forum members joining and posting a ton that it creates an impossible workload. And it doesn't have to be 1000 posts, the number is arbitrary. One can always use a smaller number if to reduce the workload.

This isn't about day to day moderation so much as preventing new users who are clearly out to cause problems and have most likely already been banned under a different account.

It would be impossible for a facebook, youtube or instagram because of the truly immense volume of new users they deal with in an ongoing basis. In those cases, where it's not remotely possible to do filtering and moderation with just humans anyway, they can allocate more system resources to scanning posts from new users, easing up as the new users clear various milestones, which reduces the load on the system.

Because again, actual problem users (as opposed to people saying stuff others don't want to hear, which is what the ignore feature is for) are invariably going to cause problems right away after signing up. So they get detected and removed nearly instantly.

Keep in mind that, in the vast majority of cases, it's not like mods need to fully read dozens of long posts by a new user to determine if it's the same troll they just banned 10 minutes earlier. It's usually immediately obvious. The mod can just glance at posts and approve them, they don't have to read them closely.

Have you ever moderated a forum like this one?
Why not just enforcement of rules without regard to number of posts?

I don't think your idea of a jr. Membership or probationary period is a bad one in theory. Let the post counter do the work but people can still throw the crap out there in the replies.

I have zero issue with how the mods here moderate. I think they're do a fantastic job and see no reason for any change. That's not at all what I'm talking about.

And new user restrictions is not my idea or any kind of theory. It's something I've encountered (both as a forum member and moderator) going way back at other forums.

It's typically available to forum owners as a simple feature baked directly into forum software or else as a plugin/add-on to that software. And when not directly available as a feature, it can usually be emulated using user-groups and permissions, although that can be a little bit of a PITA in that case.

not at all suggesting you nor am I saying the guys do a bad job. I totally agree with you they do. I was talking about the sheer volume of posts they have to be aware of and the number of reports (I saw first hand for my 6 month effort).

and yes when I said let the post counter do they work I figured there was some software manner to do what you suggest.

Listen dude. I was friends with him in college and after, my son still wears his jersey to RU football and bball games, but it is not really about "woke culture". He unloaded on his fiance.

He has made up for his mistakes, and done some amazing things, but do you have to be woke to be against absolutely gobsmacking a woman in the face?
So true.
