Everyone is talkIng about Sanders in this thread but did he really say that Doorson doesn’t match up well with Coppen State?
Yes....Carino tweeted that having Doorson running around guarding smaller bigs didn't make sense....it has nothing to do with Coppin state, just that their playing small or not having size, doesn't make sense to have a immobile big trying to get out to the 3 point line to defend shooters.
Regarding Corey....This is what a staff that sends players to the next level does....it gives the player multiple chances to expand their games, grow up, and make them coachable, (which is uncomfortable for a player used to doing one or two things well)....Corey has to learn or expand his game to a point where he can be off the ball, can become a better FT shooter and learn to be more like Mike Williams.
I think Corey is the most talented player on the team and this schedule perhaps has a lull in his preparation, while the bulk of the team is green and new and hasn't seen a FSU, SHU, Minnesota and Michigan State. What Pike is doing is pushing Corey to be more consistent and I give the staff credit for taking the existing pieces left over and making the most out of them last year.
There are a lot of coaches that would just let Corey be Corey and once he leaves the program, the staff moves on to their recruits that will be here, that they believe will buy in more or perhaps understand the team concepts or that practice matters etc.
The future of the program is in great shape because culture and having 5 Mike Williams, Geo Baker, Peter Kiss types buying in, usually gets you there faster. I think Corey will be fine and when the better competition arrives and he believes he's challenged by a better opponent, things will sort themselves out.
This is not a RU Choppin thread, but I will say that the criticism of Corey isn't bashing or negative, it's what it is when you are deemed the focal point or teams best player, it comes with the territory.........I actually believe that's part of the next 3-4 month resume that Corey needs to build on and he actually has more to prove then perhaps he believes.....
The question is does being RU's best player somehow equate to the player believing he is a next level player?? The Corey that was challenged by St. Johns backcourt and stepped up big time, is the player I believe he can be more nights than not.......but can he translate that to bringing that energy and focus in practice, on non-game days against Bryant or ECU??
This is actually potentially a little bit of a shake up to distract the team out of the mindset because they aren't playing good competition right now, so I wouldn't make too much of it.....if Corey doesn't start vs FSU, at Minnesota or vs Sparty, then we can revisit this.
