***Reason for Sanders not starting***

Pike spoke about having "all ten toes in the water, not six, but ten" at CC meeting which explains need to fully buy in and trust our coaches and program. The guys who left after last season did't buy in!! A better message would of been to not play Corey at all but Pike doesn't have the guard depth. It will be interesting how Corey responds. I think Corey wants to be a good teammate but it's time he realizes that this stuff is letting his team down.

Corey was mentioned by announcers in MSU Stoneybrook game yesterday. They said Corey could be one of the best defenders in the conference, it's up to him to do it. The announcers were talking about the great job Pikell did at SB and is now doing at Rutgers and saying how tough Rutgers has become and all the teams in the B1G will tell you this.

Everyone is talkIng about Sanders in this thread but did he really say that Doorson doesn’t match up well with Coppen State?

Yes....Carino tweeted that having Doorson running around guarding smaller bigs didn't make sense....it has nothing to do with Coppin state, just that their playing small or not having size, doesn't make sense to have a immobile big trying to get out to the 3 point line to defend shooters.

Regarding Corey....This is what a staff that sends players to the next level does....it gives the player multiple chances to expand their games, grow up, and make them coachable, (which is uncomfortable for a player used to doing one or two things well)....Corey has to learn or expand his game to a point where he can be off the ball, can become a better FT shooter and learn to be more like Mike Williams.

I think Corey is the most talented player on the team and this schedule perhaps has a lull in his preparation, while the bulk of the team is green and new and hasn't seen a FSU, SHU, Minnesota and Michigan State. What Pike is doing is pushing Corey to be more consistent and I give the staff credit for taking the existing pieces left over and making the most out of them last year.

There are a lot of coaches that would just let Corey be Corey and once he leaves the program, the staff moves on to their recruits that will be here, that they believe will buy in more or perhaps understand the team concepts or that practice matters etc.

The future of the program is in great shape because culture and having 5 Mike Williams, Geo Baker, Peter Kiss types buying in, usually gets you there faster. I think Corey will be fine and when the better competition arrives and he believes he's challenged by a better opponent, things will sort themselves out.

This is not a RU Choppin thread, but I will say that the criticism of Corey isn't bashing or negative, it's what it is when you are deemed the focal point or teams best player, it comes with the territory.........I actually believe that's part of the next 3-4 month resume that Corey needs to build on and he actually has more to prove then perhaps he believes.....

The question is does being RU's best player somehow equate to the player believing he is a next level player?? The Corey that was challenged by St. Johns backcourt and stepped up big time, is the player I believe he can be more nights than not.......but can he translate that to bringing that energy and focus in practice, on non-game days against Bryant or ECU??

This is actually potentially a little bit of a shake up to distract the team out of the mindset because they aren't playing good competition right now, so I wouldn't make too much of it.....if Corey doesn't start vs FSU, at Minnesota or vs Sparty, then we can revisit this.

I call BS...your first comment in this thread was....Sanders has a better chance of being drafted into the army

You are the one that came into this thread with that nonsense about one of our players.

Why don't you grow up and understand people can say negative comments and don't need you to protect the players. No one is on here ripping Sanders in a terrible fashion. If you want to debate what we're saying, debate the opinion we've given, not protect the player. You always fail to debate why peoples comments are wrong. You just tell people they're wrong discussing negative stuff. You obviously have never played or coached sports.

How's Eddie Jordan doing? How many minutes is Bullock getting?

Coaching in the NBA.
Bullock will play if he is good enough and he earns it. If not, he will have a decision to make. Same thing I said from Day 1.

So that's what it is...you are a player or coach that did not have the chops to make it so you just criticize those that are doing it. Got it. Those that can't play, teach...those that can't teach, criticize from the stands.

You also may have a reading comprehension problem. I said fair criticism is fine...it's the repetition that's silly....saying the same things over and over. I am not the only one that notices it because others have commented on it.

I have played the game.

I'm late to this party. Just wanted to chime in that it's no secret that Cory idolizes Alan Iverson. Now what was the biggest complaint about Iverson?

Answer - he didn't like to practice. But as talented as Cory is, he's not Alan Iverson. Hopefully he'll get it in gear because we absolutely need him to play well to have a successful season.

I stated this last spring and got ripped apart on here. Best of luck!

That’s why God invented zone. I’m afraid that he may be injured again because if he will be needed to contribute later then he needs to get some work in to shake off rust and to build chemistry with his teammates.

You're funny. Let us know when you add something worthwhile to this thread.

If you played the game you know Eddie Jordan was over his head here. But you wanted him to continue coaching here.

You know that Bullock is a transfer candidate, which many here were saying but you tried shouting us down.

You know if your aspirations are the NBA, you don't get suspended or penalized by your coaching staff each year for not giving your all or following the rules.

Give us all a break.

Great Contribution Coach !

Coach P is sending a message to his best/one of his best players. Coaches around the country do this with starters/better players every year. Gary did the same with Douby during his career. Non-issue.

I do agree with RU-Choppin as to the over the top nature of Corey criticism on the board. Corey has come MILES on the defensive end of the floor. He is a MUCH more complete player today than when Eddie left the building. That takes buying in and effort. Corey could have easily walked when Eddie left (and played big minutes for a team with much better chance of dancing than RU) and instead decided to stay here and play for an HC with whom he had zero connection. I will never rip a kid who shows that type of loyalty to Rutgers. Period.

Corey will end his Junior year (likely) in the the Top 20 in points and Top 12 in assists All-time at Rutgers. He is our best PG since Anthony Farmer.

GRF, How can Corey follow Nigel? Nigel was at Kansas State for 2 years and 2 at RU (only played one) and graduated after 4 years of college. This is only Corey's third year so I doubt he will graduate this year. If he doesn't he would have to transfer and sit out a year and I doubt that would ever happen. I don't doubt that he might leave after this year but that would only be to try to become a professional B-Ball player. The only way I see him playing a fourth year of college is if he returns to RU next season.

I do my best to support all of our players.

I will say, the board seems to confuse talent and athleticism. Sanders is the most athletic player. Talent requires something different.

Coach wants Sanders to be able to share the primary ball handling. If he doesn't find the open man, Pikiell knows the team is worse off as Sanders continues to drive, miss open players, and force ridiculous shots.

Up to Sanders. He has a great opportunity, but he will have to evolve his game from a talent perspective.

Thank goodness he invented man to man too. We looked very good playing it yesterday.

Alan Iverson was at Georgetown because at his trial for whacking a girl with a chair at a bowling alley, Coach John Thompson intervened.
Thompson, a tough disciplinarian, said he would keep AI for four years, and the judge agreed. As it turns out, AI was only at Georgetown for two years, and after averaging 25 his sophomore year, he went pro. His first year, he was really undisciplined. He averaged 20 per game, playing some 35 minutes off the bench, but shot just 39%, so he took lots of shots. Actually shot 46% from 2, but only 23% from 3--which didn't discourage him from taking 3's. As a soph, he was less helter skelter and shot better. Spent my working life in the Washington-Md area, and though I was a Maryland fan (after RU, of course), just about every Georgetown game was on TV.

I beg of you, please consider refraining from turning every thread into your critique of every poster's take on the talents of the players on the team. It's redundant and tiresome and, you are NOT the moderator of this board. If your idea is that you will be able to limit what you consider negative takes, be assured that it has the opposite effect which you have somehow not figured out yet.

Corey is probably the most important player on this team right now but he's not an NBA player. That's not "eating our own" that's just the truth. Corey wants to be an NBA player but this is his third year and every year he has been suspended and/or benched for disciplinary reasons. As a Rutgers fan this is disappointing and very frustrating. The fact that it happened again TODAY means that people are going to express this frustration.

Consider the source. This poster tried to champion keeping Eddie arguing he was a good coach.

Everyone loves Corey but if he is going to continue talking about the NBA, it's only fair that the people who follow the team can do the same.

Corey is a great talent. But there are plenty of talented players not playing in the NBA. The ones that are there, especially on the fringes which obviously Corey is, are there in part because they work hard.

If you are getting benched for practice effort, you clearly aren't working hard enough if your dream is to play in the NBA.

If I am in his camp, I am advising him to stop talking about the NBA, work has hard as he can, and evaluate it all at the end of the season. Corey needs to be the hardest working guy on the team if he wants to make it.

I'm convinced you have reading comprehension issues. Sorry, but, you can work on improve it with the correct help !

Go back and read my initial comment....I said Pikiell is sending the correct message. Subsequent comments said, there is nothing wrong with Fair Criticism of any player on the team. I have done it myself about Several Players on this board.

Omg. Please God help this fool.

Just saying, Corey thinks he is a better player than he actually is. It has been that way ever since I saw him during his sophomore year in HS.

If I'm not mistaken there is a Corey Sanders mixtape where he's called Lakeland's Finest.
LOL! The hilarious thing about that quote for Sanders, "Lakelands Finest," is that Lakeland doesn't have a finest! If you saw him play at Lakeland, then you know Lakelands biggest contribution to humanity isn't basketball, but used car lots. LMAO

Russ, his biggest deficiency is his shooting and the way he shoots he will never be a good shooter IMO. He should have been fixing that in the offseason (and i'm sure the coaches told him that) but didn't. Were he to miraculously improve his shooting, do you think he would have a shot at the NBA?

Possibly.

I've spoken to a couple of NBA College Scouts about him and a big concern they have about him is off-the-court. They won't get specific but the guys I've spoken to mention where he needs to improve his game and then they say something like "then there's the off the court stuff". One scout, from a team that made it to the conference finals last season, questions Sanders' commitment to basketball. He actually said that he's not sure it is Corey's number one priority.

All these responses and I am the forst?
The sad thing about that, and it is under reported, is that one of Iverson's close friends had just died. The man was grieving, and in the book "Not A Game," several of the reporters in the room claim that they could tell that Iverson had been drinking.

I just can't imagine having dreams of the NBA then being told you aren't ready a second time in the pre draft process and follow that up by not practicing hard to get there. Mind boggling really if you're serious about trying to get to the league.

That being said I still have high hopes for him this season of reaching his potential as a top B1G guard. It would be nice to see a little more maturity and leadership coming from him at this point though as he should be setting the example for players like Gio not getting out worked by them

As a total aside.... would it be possible for people to call RU-Choppin-Ohio "Choppin-Ohio" instead of "RU Choppin"? We're not the same guy.

Just look at the number of people that liked my comments in this thread about the treatment of Sanders by Rutgers fans. This is not about me...this is about some of the Hate directed at Sanders by Rutgers fans on this board. It's becoming obsessive

I can guarantee that no other fan base treats and talks about their Best Player like this. So many comments are about making fun of his NBA dreams.

Stupid comments like "he will be drafted in the army before going to the NBA" or "war with North Korea before he is drafted"....Come on

I agree with most of this. I think whether or not it's a non issue depends on how Corey responds to it but I think he will respond the right way.

Corey will go down as an all time great guard at RU..especially if he finishes out his 4 years here

Thanks Russ. Another strike which isn't good for him. I guess if was serious he would have spent the offseason only using his left hand and learning to shoot properly.

Despite his deficiencies he is still a good player for RU and I will be rooting for him!

As far as all time, I think he is on the list of top 30-40 or so.

Yea I guess I should have said since I’ve been watching RU play..mainly since the early 2000s lol I’m too young to go as far back as most of you so I should of said one of the best in the last 2 decades lol

I hear you. Sanders has to develop a 3, jump shot, or lay up to be considered effective. So far, he does not have any of those in his arsenal in any reliable fashion.
