Recruiting

Anyone familiar with Brandt’s style? We know Conor is already lethal on top. Are they similar or different wrestlers?

Stupid question, Is shawver too big to cut to 125
If Shawver wants his best shot to fulfill his promise of being a National champ his best chance would be at 125. I think he can beat the elites there…. But at 133 again I have a hard time seeing him close the gap on elites, Byrd, Ayala, Romney… and returning Crookham and PSU’s Ono…

Whatever weight, I'd like to see the Shawver version of 2024 vs Shawver of 2025.

Why do you think Dean entered the portal late. It is called poaching. We met with him Tuesday with a deal for next year and all was fine so someone came in with a much bigger deal for him to enter the portal. Good for Dean getting a big bag but bad for us. I hope he wins a title and AAs wherever he goes. This is not an indictment of Scott.

wrestling will be real fun to watch when the NCAA finals will consist of PSU, OKST, and Iowa, with a few randoms. If you take away the Hendrickson win and Starocci feat I would argue this was one of the lamest finals in recent years.

We just lost our best chance of an AA next year to the portal… hopefully Scott is cooking something up rn in the portal.

Take a look yourself.

To me, he has looked too small in every match I've seen. I think he is skilled and very quick. If the program is good at developing wrestlers, he has the skill to build on. However, he must increase his weight and muscle mass.
Thx, not sure what to make of this tbh. Our only RS with a ranked win is Barbosa. Most of the other RS are just trading wins/losses with unranked guys. Rn only confident with Barbosa to be qualifier+. Smith, Gibson, NiNi, and Ford could be good but yeah no ranked wins(not many chances yet) so hard to predict anything imo.

2x Pa state champ
the No. 2 125-pound signee in the country and the No. 34 overall recruit nationally by MatScouts …
I knew that. Was being sarcastic about why recruited. As I said, plenty skilled. He was a lighter weight when recruited and highly ranked. His ranking dropped when listed as 125. Any good reason he can't be bulked up and developed?

I agree very skilled, but sometimes these lighter guys do not get big enough Kurt Mchenry was a better recruit and he never got big enough to be a top level kid Smith is talented enough but he will need to get bigger Hopefully he will

And yet the B1G and NCAA will do nothing about tampering and breaking the rules... I like the WVU calling out Iowa. Every coach and athlete should put them on blast and share the receipts publicly.
All the NIL players use 3rd parties to contact athletes and it's not illegal at all. Coaches can't do it but boosters can. ASU turned Iowa in and the NCAA laughed boosters don't count 🤷

NCAA has lost control, if they ever had it, with NIL.

I don't think you can blame the big spenders.
Look at football.
Either you play the game given the landscape or you fall behind.
Guys like Dabo Sweeney at Clemson in football and Tom Ryan at Ohio State in wrestling...slow to adjust and now falling behind.

Some court cases last year said otherwise. Next week it's back in court again on April 7.

Another article about the courts findings

Here is a recent one on how things are now before court next week

Probably 95% of the message board people were all applauding when the NCAA had their legs cut out from under them. Now that the inevitable sh*t show is upon us, everyone asking why can’t the NCAA do something about all the crap that’s happening. You all got what you wanted until what you got wasn’t good.

I think the general consensus was athletes should be paid and there should be infrastructure in place to prevent it from becoming the Wild West. The problem is the NCAA took a hard stance about not allowing athletes to be paid rather than coming up with a contingency plan if they ultimately lost that battle. When they lost, they weren’t prepared. Now we’re living in an era where they’re trying to figure it out on the fly and they’re doing a real bad job of it.

Basically the NCAA got a late start on all of this and now it’s chaos.

All of these kids are just free-agent “resident” athletes at this point…doubt most of them even attend classes or have any meaningful academic standards…and no contractual or performance based requirements that I am aware of. If the athlete doesn’t perform well I’ve heard there is really nothing a coach/school can do other than sit them on the bench and hope they transfer…if the athlete does perform well all a coach/school can do is hope they don’t transfer (or offer more money to stay). Amazing to me that the whole “athletes need to get paid” nonsense never seemed to take into account the value of a scholarship, housing, food, etc. And, seriously, I always hear these BS stats around athletes/academics but when was the last time a high-profile athlete was deemed academically ineligible before a bowl game or event? How is that statistically possible unless universities are playing games?

I wish the NBA would allow Kids go straight to the NBA...ala Kemp, Dawkins, etc....

Would probably see the "Elite" players (Cooper Flagg and others) go straight to the NBA and eliminate the top NIL dollars.

I really can't see how wrestling survives this, it's not a sport AD's are going to bat for and one which will be listed under cost savings. I can't see a Little Rock or Campbell continuing on and many more will simply defund it. Even in the premier conference Wisconsin and MSU are defunding the sport to 5 scholarships. Eventually you'll have a few top teams having a circle jerk amongst each other wondering why no one funds the sport any longer.

This is a nonsense take. NCAA cried for years that there’s no money available to pay players. Then the rules were changed and all of a sudden Iowa has millions of dollars to give athletes to compete in a niche sport.

The athletes absolutely deserve to be paid. I wish there were contracts in place so that it wasn’t free agency but there should be no problems with athletes getting their due.

I am sure a Natl finalist can but I am also sure nothing is certain. At end of day somebody will be unhappy. But seems like that is OK in the Happy Valley
Starocci's injury default in the B1Gs really messed up the brackets in 2024. Since he was the the #9 seed, it gave Mekhi the #1 and Shane Griffith the #4, so you had 3 former NCs on one side the bracket. Welsh avoided all of them until the finals when he met Starocci. He only had to face Wask (Navy), Murphy (Campbell), Ruth (Illinois), and then Wolak (Columbia) to reach the finals so it wasn't exactly murderers row. Not saying he isn't an elite talent but like you said anything is possible nor is he bulletproof.
