Recruting

Either way, it great to get off to a good start and be in the conversation for good recruits. I am going to enjoy this Prague Spring for as long as it lasts.

All right. It is just a conversation, and these kids flip so often that I do not see why people won't just drop a name. No one is going to say " Do not go there, they already mentioned your name on the online forum, which says you have a 18% chance of shooting a 3 according to kenporn, and a 37% chance of going to that school, given what the population size of 137 national recruit class"

People like to think they're important. That's really what this thread has turned in to. There is not much value provided form second and third hand cryptic statements to the board, yet, people feel good when they post them.

Not much to see here.

I am just saying, a lot of people are saying "I heard thing and that" and continue to say it. To me, it's overdone. A lot of people want to know, and this isn't a place where "Who knows more information than who"

I do not think I am the only one. We all like Rutgers basketball, and this is a great forum.

So really the only info we have is we are recruiting a player we have no chance at. Naz Reid will be a top 5-10 player in the nation in 2018. Calapari and Coach K will be all over him

This article about us recruiting Naz Reid and a player from Linden includes one of the most infuriating quotes I've ever seen.

"Who's Eddie Jordan, that's first off," Linden coach Phil Colicchio said.

I mean, Jesus. If that's the impression an elite HS coach has, what chance did we ever have? Glad to see he feels great about Pikiell.

I read that quote and felt the same way. EJ was a great RU guy but apparently had no feel for what recruiting was all about. Coach P seems to have a good grip on this situation. Unlike football where you need to recruit many NJ guys to "fence the garden" basketball can only really hope to get one or two a year by virtue of the low number of ships available. Hopefully he makes great inroads very quickly.

Villanova will be tougher competition for his services than Duke or Kentucky at this point. Obviously there is a long way to go on this recruitment, but Reid is not blown away by the "status" of the so-called BlueBloods. He, of course, could decide that one of those type schools would be the best fit for his development, but right now that does not appear to be where he is leaning.

As to RU, the staff is doing a very good job. The folks around Reid respect and like the RU staff. Reid is a long shot for us, but it is reasonable to think we have a legit shot - as contrasted with our past situation with kids at this level.

"Long shot"

Ugh

And he's right. He had no college coaching experience, and not a whole lot of success as a head coach in the NBA. The problem is he was basically the only guy we could get to do the job at the time with the mess and resources we had. Anybody else would've (rightfully) demanded a huge investment that we were not ready to make just yet.

You're the worst. Why do you bother posting if this is your attitude?

How am I the worst? Because I said we are not getting this top 5 player in the country? Also that post was from more than 2 weeks ago. We had no recruiting news and it was concerning - considering we lose 5 major contributors - at next seasons end. My attitude is positive. I love this team and I'm happy with coaching staff. And I'm very realistic. If we win 16 games - I consider it a nice season. Strange that u would cherry pick my name and call me the worst over something small like that

This 2018 class can really be a game changer for us.

I haven't followed bball recruiting that closely in the past (for obvious reasons) but when will most of the 2018 recruits start to commit?

I think Reid is very talented, but Top 5 or 10 in the country is a little high for the ranking.....(probably nitpicking a bit, I'd say Top 20-25).....I'd love to have him at RU, but I am not so sure RU is as long a shot for landing him because of where his talent level or ranking is...RU is really the perfect fit for him locally and the offense suits what flexibility his game offers against a strong schedule each and every year in the B1G.

Regarding the recruiting notes above, there are a LOT of quality kids being pursued by the staff for 2018-1019 etc....how this shakes out is as importanto while jerseyguy probably was a little over the top, no one can discount that we will need to backfill these expected losses of Freeman, Sa, Nigel and especially Mike Williams as a leader on and off the court. I'm comfortable with Geo Baker as a key replacement for one of the departing guards.

How we look in the backcourt is as important as how does Thiam and Omoyuri and Laurent sort out the Small Forward position during these next 3 months....which of the three takes command of the position on offense, which of the three becomes the most reliable defender and how does the staff sort out minutes.

Playing the best players this year ultimately means playing smaller with three guards and less minutes for Thiam and Omoyuri....(asking Mike Williams to battle for those rebounds and deliver 3 point shooting vs taking your lumps and developing Thiam and Eugene to do those things and play through their mistakes). Matchups dictate this vs the opponents as well.

How well Rutgers performs against B1G competition likely impacts recruiting of a 5 star recruit like Reid. The emphasis in recruiting going forward should be players that are shooters regardless of position.Far too many years have gone bye with only 1-2 players on the court that could be identified as a reliable double digit scorer.Scoring 50-65 points per game won't win many B1G games.A squad full of complementary type players won't get the job done.
