Regardless of your politics, it was nice to see the Gov there and there for the whole game

If you're a fan of Rutgers, you always want the Governor supporting the University even in small ways like going to athletic events occasionally - and like that he stayed until the end. Got to say hello very briefly to the Gov as he walked by when I was on the floor right before the game - nice to also see my friend, Pete Cammarano, his new chief-of-staff and most recently Mayor of Metuchen at the game with the Governor.

Pete's a great guy and a good friend (we went to a couple of bowl games together back in the Schiano days) and a huge Rutgers sports fan. Loved that while his boss was in a suit, as you'd expect, Pete was in an RU sweatshirt and jeans, as this was, most importantly, a basketball game. I suspect we'll see the Gov at more RU events than most past Governors.

Announcers said it best during broadcast. Received nice applause today but how he’s received the next time he’s there will be telling.

I was good to see his support but let's see how many times he shows up in his 4 years.
I guarantee it'll be more than most of his predecessors. Did Christie, Corzine, McGreevey or Whitman ever even go to any RU football or basketball games? I know Codey did and Pete C. was his chief-of-staff, too.

he got cheers and boos...I just am not a fan and I wasnt a fan of Christie either. Guys like Murphy with his fake smile is in it for himself

Would you rather he not go to RU sporting events? Do you not think it's at least a good thing to have the Gov attending on occasion? He's been Governor for a week and he's already been to a game.

Exactly. Maybe Christie showed up once when we played Notre Dame .Who knows if anyone else showed. Did Murphy give a speech on campus before the game? Just curious.

yeah Christie went to a few games too, so we will see. I believe Whitman supported the initial stadium expansion or was it set into motion by Florio?

Great to see and makes me optimistic for his support of RU so early in his term. Christie showed up at a Rutgers basketball game wearing a Delaware sweatshirt and then sat behind the ND bench at the ND-RU game in South Bend. The smattering of boos I heard were stupid, especially for a very early term governor who is there to show his support for RU.

The optics wear thin. It would be nice if we had someone in our corner. I want our leader to say that there is no reason the state university of nj should not be the desired destination of any student or student athlete. I’d like him to say as governor it is my job to do everything i can to keep our best and brightest here, and actually mean it.

Corzine attended many of the football games. Not sure about basketball however.

I'll say this. I took a class last semester in the Eagleton Institute called political Campaigning with two of the leaders of the Rutgers PAC, Maggie Moran and Mike Duhaime. They are two Rutgers alumni on opposite ends of the political spectrum, who run one of the best classes at Rutgers. Mike has recently become a Rutgers Trustee. At this class we had speakers from all sides of the political spectrum, as well as Jon Corzine, Chris Christie, and we were supposed to have Phil Murphy. He couldn't make it, due to a last minute schedule change. Sent Pete Cammarano, who was excellent, and then called Pete's cell, mid-class, to apologize for not being there, and answer some of our questions. He didn't have to do that, and he did it anyway.

I walked up to him today to thank him for being a class act, and I'll stand behind that.

I think about four people booed and I am about as conservative as you can get. While I hope Gov Murphy does not legalize drugs, Gov Christie was a terrible governor. I hope Gov Murphy supports his State University in academics and athletics. And maybe someone can let him know where to find Rutgers gear,no more seeing the Governor of our state wearing stuff from out of state schools at his press conferences.

I think it is fantastic the new governor showed up.

How can someone not appreciate that?

Would you rather he attend a game at NJIT, Rowan, Seton Hall, FDU, etc.?
Or sit home and watch TV?

Plus, if Bac thought the attendance was bad tonight, it would have been even worse without the gov and his peeps!

Seems like a friendly guy, of course, that means little in Politics. Get R' done, Gov.

Nice post. A small thing, but it's nice to see the new Governor appears to care about small things like that and also great to hear Pete filled in well. I only know him as a friend, although, of course, I did vote for him for Mayor of Metuchen. Also, good to see the formation of the Scarlet-PAC to speak for Rutgers in Trenton. Probably overdue.

Great point - I heard 98% cheers and a couple of boos. I've cheered any gov who was announced at an RU event, regardless of party, because I want that person to like and support Rutgers. bac, being a huge Trump fan, was probably one of the guys booing, so that's why he heard the boos more clearly, lol.

Seems to me he has already over promised and will be hard pressed to deliver without making this a more economically challenged state to live in than it already is. I am not that close to agenda other than knowing of his progressive tendencies, but I have never heard him say anything about his plans regarding support for RU. I would not expect much because there is no money. The best we can hope for is probably the status quo.

Seemed genuinely friendly when I shook his hand and got a picture at halftime. Even chuckled at my joke about being a public school employee and how he's gonna save my pension and do away with PARCC testing. Later in the game Jersey Mike's sent down some chicken cheese steak's for him and his wife and Pete, but they didn't want them so they gave them to me and a few of the other fans sitting right behind them! Thanks Governor Murphy!

Murphy is great at shaking hands and kissing babies. Hoping he's just as good with getting policy enacted.

McGreevey was at a few while I was a student.

As pointed out by the original poster, as it relates to Rutgers athletics, it doesn't matter if the Governor is Liberal, Conservative, Independent, Marxist ... whatever.

Simply having the top politician in the state show support for Rutgers athletics is a very good thing. Period.

The Mrs and I work at a Food Bank and the Gov showed up on Thanksgiving to assist with dishing out dinner. He had never been there before.

I'm sure we'll see him again next Thanksgiving along with the APP Reporter and Photographer.
