... showin' my Rutgers pride down here at Longport Beach with my big tailgate tent. Anyone else got the R on the beach? Tshirt? Hat? Towel? Tent? Post pic here if so.

Not there this weekend but we usually hang out near the first lifeguard stand to the north of the Longport lifeguard building. If I'm there with my kids and nieces just look for the biggest hole in the sand on the beach. Looks like you are right in front on the playground.

seaweed- Thanks! Good stuff.

M1ipabrams- Funny you should say that, yes we are right near the playground. Me and my kids were JUST by that lifeguard stand and we asked the kids over there if we could dig in the 2 giant holes they made by the water. Your relatives perhaps? If so, wow, smal world.

P.S This is only the 3rd time I've ever been to Longport, and I'm convinced it's the Jersey shore's best kept secret. So sshhh.

Anything special about Longport? No big Philly crowds?

I need a tailgate tent! May I ask where you bought it?

I actually bought it off of a board member (I forget his handle). He had only used it once so it was brand new. Such a great purchase for tailgating and for beach. Just google Rutgers tailgating tent and see what's out there. If I can find a link to my exact one I'll post it. Mine is solid... heavy duty and well built.

Absolutely NOT. No big Philly crowds. It's clean, not crowded, free parking 1-2 blocks from the beach, bathrooms practically on the sand, basketball courts, tennis courts and a playground on the beach. Week passes for 10 or season for 15 (until today) then it goes up to 30 for the season. So no day badges but 10 for the week aint bad. Kids under 12 are free. Element is not trashy at all. Longport is pretty affluent. So yeah I cant say enoufh good things. Granted theres no boardwalk, no rides, not a crazy amount of places to eat, but at least for me and my fam right now its exactly what we need (my kids are 3 and 6) when we are looking for a low key day at the beach without any craziness.

Theres also one or two pizza places that deliver to you pretty much right on the beach, you just walk to the street. And not sure if legal or not but I have seen a decent amount of people with open alcoholic containers... casually sipping a beer or wine right on the beach.

not legal

not legal
Correct, it is not legal, but as long as you aren't obvious about it, I have never seen anyone harassed about it in Longport. Margate down near Lucy is a different story, but that section of beach is much more crowded and with lots more college age folks.

Longport does have some of the nicest beaches in NJ in my opinion. Some incredible homes there too. As to the drinking on the beach, most of the beaches down this way are fine with it as long as you are discreet and not acting like an ahole. ironically in OC which is a dry town, they are incredibly fine with it, I see people all the time with open containers on the beach. Night in Venice is a big night here in town and it basically becomes legal to have open containers wherever you are, beach, street, sidewalk, biking, etc. Its quite the opposite of Belmar where I got a ticket for having an open beer standing on the sidewalk in front of the house.
