Rhode Island was slowed at times during the season by injuries. Hassan Martin missed five and played a lot more at less than 100% following a torn quadriceps. That's a tough injury for an undersized big, who is all about power and explosiveness. The starting pg struggled physically then missed eight games after they shut him down to figure out his medical condition. He's back now but with a minutes restriction. Their best player (Matthews) was coming back from an ACL tear. He was inconsistent but is playing his best right now and was named conference tournament MOP. Hurley seems happy at URI and has shown real growth as a coach. It seems like a great match there for now. His contract negotiations have been more about program enhancements- things like a larger salary pool for assistants, more charter flights for travel, even a training table wasn't a standard part of the program. Even by Atlantic 10 standards, Rhode Island was lacking. Once they got as healthy as they're going to get this season, they won 12 of their last 14, including a current 8 game winning streak.
