We don't play a small forward we play three guards so he's going to play one of those three guards.

I think it's all about how hard the kid is willing to work. But, boy, HC has some players!

Pikiell will have him playing better on the defensive end. I'd like to see him play in a HS game. The effort in that tape was very poor on the defensive end.

I'd be curious to see what Baker looked like in HS.

Believe this was posted previously but here is game footage from the game vs. The Patrick School. I know its highlights so take it for what its worth.

I believe knights1212 has seen him play.

Well, we play three guards because we don't really have a SF to play. Thiam is growing more into that role as he's been going in closer to the basket at times. Right now he's more of a 3-and-D guy on the wing, though he's adding to his arsenal a bit. I think if Pike had a true SF, he'd play him as a SF - after the basics of conditioning, rebounding, and defense, I think Pike will play to a player's strengths rather than forcing them into a defined role.

I don't buy it.

If Coach Pike had his way the higher ranked kids would be here and we wouldn't be losing while developing projects. Do you really believe, as you've stated, he's avoiding trying to lure top ranked talent and is going after under the radar projects purposely. That makes zero sense. I mean jeez, you think he would have taken Mensah or Bullock if he had better options?

A few top recruits with good coaching changes everything quickly.
Remember that highly ranked class of myles mack, jerome seagers, eli carter, kadeem jack.. How much did they come in and win? Not much right.. Because higher ranked kids needs to be developed also. Do you remember how we were laughing at Seton Hall at that time? Both programs were about even at the time. The Hall was recruiting overseas players- that weren't that highly ranked n etc. We stopped laughing after a few of them developed- and became solid upperclassmen. That made a stable situation for when they started getting good recruits. While we continued the revolving door of highly ranked transfers. We need to build similar as The Hall did

Great post. And I think ru should follow seton hall’s path. But it might take a rebuild of 6-7 years too. So we’ll have to be patient and enjoy the process

6 or 7 years. Thats nuts. With the quality of this staff and if we bring in a couple of blue chippers this program will get up there real soon. And Jerzee I stand by the staff looking for highly ranked guys. Of course every player has to develop but if you think that they're happier developing under the radar prospects than highly ranked guys I don't know what more to say.

Btw, Rice's recruiting class would have done very well if not for the issues he created.

Pikell is building the right way. Recruit underrated players with potential. Alot of highly ranked players will transfer out if the team isn't winning right away. Underrated players will likely have less ego and will be willing to work and have more patience. When they become juniors and seniors they will be able compete. Higher ranked players- we would just help develop- untill he transfers to ncca tournament team
Except Harper isn't underrated. He is unranked (maybe that's what you meant) but he's not underrated.

Huh? ... to this poster and the one to whom he is replying.

No matter how many times Pikiell refers to Thiam as college basketball's tallest guard, or as a guard, Thiam is clearly a SF (small forward), also called a WF (i,e, wing forward). A small forward (SF) or wing forward (WF), mainly plays ON THE WINGS. Thiam, while turning the ball over very rarely, also doe snot have the dribbling skills one would ordinarily associate with GUARDS. And defensively, Thiam's initial and primary assignments are the opposing team's SMALL or WING forward. he does cover guards sometimes, either on defensive switches, or if the opposing team plays 3 guards. But defensively, Thiam is clearly a SF or WF. By almost any definition I have heard of a SF or WF, Thiam fits the bill ... and plays the position.

Fair enough - I generally think of a WF differnetly than a SF, though both are the "3" spot. Thiam has been much more of a perimeter player and a "catch and shoot" type, and isn't really so much the "around the rim" player that I usually think of when I think of a SF. I think of Dane Miller more as a SF than a WF, for example... not sure if that makes any sense. I have a distinction in my head between "WF" and "SF"... almost like the difference between "combo guard" and "point guard".

Thiam is a perimeter player who plays on the wing, and occasionally comes inside to shoot. When I think of a SF, I think more like Kawhi Leonard or Andre Iguodala type role.

I dunno - I might just have warped perceptions.

Just to follow on that, it might just be that Thiam doesn't fit the "mold" of the type of 3 that we've seen at Rutgers in a while: Laurent, Kone, Miller, Poole, Pettis, Griffin.... then again, to be fair, we haven't really had many great small forwards.

I know it’s a small sample so far, but does anyone really believe that Mensah will return in 18-19?
