Rossi needs to the fired tonight.

Ruevolution is absolutely right - wsu must have run that same play a half doZen times for big chunks - I felt bad for our lbs trying to cover speedy receivers blowing past them over the middle

The crazy thing is, I was fine with the game plan all game until the last drive. But you have to hit the QB on that last drive. They can dink and dunk all game between the 20s. It slows the game down and we forced a couple of fourth down turnovers. I understand it was a tough assignment for the DBS. I'm just at a complete loss of words on the last drive. Especially when they got in the red zone. Not one blitz. And zero creativity from the Dline. Great call coach. Let's run that play where we tell the D-line to run right into the O-line again. And then when the pocket collapses, we have no one in the middle because the every linebacker is covering a WR so the QB runs for 10. Absolutely terrible jobs by the coaches

An inexperienced secondary with new guys pressed into service at the last minute practically dictates cover-2. I'm OK with that. However the lack of any pass rush from the front 4 is downright startling...

I'm with you here. Before the last drive started, I started thinking. Please don't pull back into that soft zone during this last series. It hadn't worked all game. Schiano used to use this bend but don't break but would be able to lock down in the red Zone. Not sure if we havethe DBs for this but giving the QB all day to throw puts more pressure on them. I seem to remember Rossi mixing it up more last year against them and getting pressure at times. Maybe it's as simple as Hamilton being out? I'm baffled

Rutgers blitzed 6 times today on 66 pass attempts. On those 6 blitzes 5 were incomplete with one completion. We didn't get to the QB but pressure led to the QB's internal clock to speed up and lack of timing. Remember the biggest knock on Falk coming in was his indecision and holding the ball to long. We did absolutely nothing to attack these areas. In fact by not blitzing and playing a risk adverse soft zone we helped him out. Why Rossi would determine this was the best defense to play is mind numbing. Not sure he really knows what he's doing this isn't Rhode Island. But what I saw sure looked like a prevent defense the whole game.

The front 4 was getting no pressure whether they were running stunts or bull rushing. Why were we incapable of showing blitz from a LB and then pulling out and bringing pressure from the opposite side from a LB, S or CB?

Net net is that the overmatched DBs did ok given their severe lack of experience. Their DL mates absolutely failed them when needed most.

And let's not go to the OL. Unacceptable penalties. Just failure.

How about jamming a receiver at the line maybe once to see if that may be effective? What did they run about 35 bubble screens?

Clearly, WSU watched the last 2 years of film on Rutgers' defense and saw that they were clueless when it came to defending that play.

This guy played rush 4, cover 2 all game with no adjustment. Not one nickel package. Not one time did we jam a receiver at the line of scrimmage. 478 yards and not one pass over 25 yards in the air. Rossi is an atrocious coordinator. Period end of story

You do realize we don't have enough DB's to play nickel or dime packages, right? You also realize that 3 of the 5 that played are freshman, right? What you saw was a result of this, nothing more.

You need a special player to play press. They need to be strong with long arms and great recovery quickness. No offense, but the back ups were second stringers for a reason.

Alternatively, you could just stick someone out there to jam and play short zone (ie: press and release WR to safety), but then now you need a safety with the instincts and speed to play post to seam to boundary as well as handle any runs funneled to him. Great cover-2 teams always had at least one pro-bowl caliber safety (John Lynch, Bucs; Bob Sanders, Colts; Mike Brown, Bears).

I just don't understand why the middle of the field was constantly wide open. There had to be at least 15 10-20 yard receptions where the receiver just ran directly to the middle of the field and were 10 yards from any defender.

The only chance we had was to make the QB hurry...The only chance.
Incredible how you play zero nickle or dime against a spread and bring no pressure on the final drive....you have to be crazy
Or perhaps shell shocked. As its prey becomes ,remaining frozen in fear as a snake approaches.

you do realize that we have more than 5 guys in the DB, right?

Hester
Austin
Wharton
Cioffi
Hampton
Adams
Hunt
Jacobs
Clayton
James

That's starter and backup for an entire nickel package. Hester and Jacobs can play safety and Cioffi can slide back to corner alongside Wharton and Austin. If they wanted to maintain safety help, they can bring in Hunt or someone else to play 3 deep safeties and 3 DB and a LB to cover underneath. There were options. To say that we don't have enough DB's to play a nickel package is just plain wrong.

You honestly believe that we don't have 6 DBs on the roster? Wow, talk about delusional.

We blitzed a couple of times...and it worked. But then we went back to that cover 2 shell and got carved up. Again and again. Their qb had 5-7 seconds in the pocket almost every play. I don't care if we have revis, deion, champ, and rod woodson at cb. Give a qb 7 seconds and someone will be open.
Agree 100% - AND i noticed that their skinny qb looked a little rattled after we got to him........so, why not bring it again?

This. It's Sunday, and I can't shake the fact that Rossi's scheme was to rush 4 and cover 2 the entire game. When we blitz the few times we did, Falk panicked, because his comfortable 5+ second time back there was altered. He rushed his passes for incompletions and on at least three occasions, he took off and ran. IMO, Rossi is NOT a DC yet. He has a long way to go to understand the entire picture. His inability to make adjustments were the real reason we lost even with the penalties, to's and clock management issues.

If I had time, I'd go back and clock all of Falk's throws. Most of the ones where the announcers said "he has all kinds of time", he let go of the ball about 3 seconds after the snap. That's not to say if given 5 seconds, our DL would have gotten to him, but that he didn't just camp out back there. The times he did have 5+ seconds, he was usually under pressure and scrambling by that point.
