Ru band hail to victors

I was in the band during the Shea era. These kind of games were commonplace. My senior year was the 1997 0-11 campaign. We took our lumps since we did not have much to celebrate. But we NEVER played the opponent's fight song except during pregame. If we were getting trounced, which was a regular occurrence, we would only play on 1st downs and on any Rutgers score. Even if we were down 64-0 and scored a late touchdown. Otherwise, we just kept quiet like the rest of the stadium.

Please band, as a former member, I implore you to not do this again. Cheer on the team when appropriate, have pride, and don't let yourselves be laughed at.
Wasn't that Kellerman's band? He knew what was up. This Tim Smith guy can't get out of here fast enough.

I don't understand the band playing the opponents fight song during the game. Playing the visitor's alma mater BEFORE the game is a classy move and is just being a welcoming host. Playing the visitor's fight song (several times) during the game, when you are getting your butts kicked, just revs up the opponents fans even more than they already are (which we certainly don't need), and makes us seem pathetic. Even the Michigan fans near me couldn't believe it and were laughing about how pathetic it was.

Does Michigan play the Ohio State fight song when Ohio State visits Ann Arbor?
Does Ohio State play the Michigan fight song when Michigan visits Columbus?

It was awful, embarrassing and definitely pissed me off. And it was like 5 or 6 times.

I'm just a fan. I can't imagine what the parents of a Rutgers player who is in the process of getting humiliated would feel if our band was playing the opposing team's fight song. When you're getting your asses kicked, don't have the freakin' band walking around the stadium playing tunes. Don't you have any school and/or personal pride? Just shows it doesn't mean anything to you. What a loser's mentality. It's hard to believe that this isn't a joke. The band director definitely needs to answer for this. I don't care if this is his last year or not.

Throughout the third quarter I keep hearing" Hail to the Victors" and the Michigan fans singing. I actually thought someone brought a recording. In the fourth when I literally could not sit for one more touch down and was walking towards the gate to leave, I realized it was our band. There were RU fans screaming at the band to go away and stop playing. Listen it is so "sportsmanlike" to do it pre game, but when are getting the worst smack down ever, it is not really not a good idea. And the fact that someone has to tell our band and directer that is not a good idea, that our fans may be "sensitive" at this point in the game, is part of what is wrong with the whole program. Somehow we always get it wrong.
And I love and support our band. I appreciate all they do to make a great atmosphere at the game. Sportsmanship is one thing, rubbing salt into the wounds of the few faithful who actually remained at the game to support our team, is just wrong. It is our stadium, our home game, if they wanted to hear their fight song over and over again, they should have brought their own band.

Agreed. I appreciate the efforts of the band each week, but this just showed poor judgment on the part of the band director.

Shows how out of touch and oblivious Tim Smith and the band are. The more I think about this the more pathetic it I think it makes Rutgers look..a total whipping boy for the league. 10k plus Michigan fans welcomed like it was their home while theyaannihilate us......emial Hobbs and let him know your displeasure

Keep playing opponent's fight songs. It is a collegial thing to do and has nothing to do with what happens on the field.

Hell, for all we know Harbaugh heard that and then allowed us to get a first down.

Yeah, I am upset about the offense... Not the band.

Tim Smith allowed his band to play the opponents fight song during a blow out loss to a conference foe. Tim- maybe you can learn the Japanese National Anthem and play it on Pearl Harbor day, if you were still here maybe you could teach the band the Saudi Arabian national Anthem and play it next September 11th. For Christ sakes man get a clue. You slapped our fanbase, players and coaches right across the face.

who cares? the team was a trending topic for how bad the play was on social media throughout the country OTHERWISE TO PUT IT BLUNTLY .. THE WHOLE COUNTRY WAS LAUGHING... and we worry about what the band played?? whats next,if your hot dog roll was fresh? SMFH..UNREAL.

This is the dumbest post that I've ever read on this board.

What is sad is all you clowns moaning about it
didn't know that our band has done this many, many times.
Where were you when they played the Iowa fight song two weeks ago?
or the Michigan State or the Indiana fight songs when they visited?

Um I think everyone is worrying about the shit kicking..but we can also worry about the band sucking up to and be lap dogs for Michigan fans.

Its inappropriate to do for Iowa fans too butat 70 billion to nothing its flat out pathetic. .can Smith use any judgment that doesnt make the band look like fools

Oh shut it. "Should be suspended." Please.

Yup. Everyone involved with that fiasco should either be fired, on the spot IMHO, or suspended (EDIT: if the kids had no say in the situation, as much as I think they should have said "no," I guess I was being a tad too harsh...).

Lol. Nuts is the guy that said 'ash is a closer'. Also predicted Kyle to win 9 games in 2013!

I predicted no such thing of Kyle Flood in 2013 (I'm quite sure everyone here but you knows this...) and, so far, Ash is doing a great job recruiting.

Guys guys please stop and think!! Take the blinders off for a moment and try thinking outside the box. Do we really think the band leader is a clueless twit or do you think he knew exactly what he was doing? It's clearly the latter. He is a product of the academic community who has hammered an anti big time sports message for decades. So playing Michigan's fight song twice was nothing more than a parting shot and a feather in his cap. He should be put on notice by being formally written up by the AD.

maybe people on Titanic complained what that band played when it was sinking? If they did they were probably Rutgers fans.

Because nobody cares. It means - LITERALLY - nothing. It'll be gone before we all know it, the B1G isn't "kicking us out," and this will turn around. Plain and simple. We're ALL frustrated this morning. Shit, I just starting dating a Purdue girl and, dammit, I can't even say a word to her about football this weekend lol!

Agreed. We certainly have bigger problems to deal with, but having our band help to rev up the opposing team's fans certainly doesn't help. What's next? Will the Rutgers cheerleaders now be cheering for the opposing team in order to be welcoming and because it is the "collegial thing to do"?

Even as a Michigan fan, I found this pathetic and was somewhat even mad for Rutgers.
I had Michigan fans around me that said the same exact thing. It is one thing to play the visiting teams fight song at the beginning of the game it is another to play the visiting teams fight song upon request multiple times in a blowout loss. Lost count at 6 by the way.

One Michigan man clearly in his 80's said it best. He has been to every stadium in the Big 10 over a 70 year period and has never seen this in all his days. He said the only thing they were missing was an M on their chest for the amount of time they spent in the visiting section. Thought it was the most small time thing he has ever seen.

The fact that people are defending this behavior just shows how much this fan base does not get what it takes to actually attract top talent and show the team support even under bad circumstances.

How do you think the teams family think? The verbals? The recruits interested? This has an effect and not a positive one on all of them.

Because add that up to all the other RU cluster****s and it adds up to the whole gameday experience. If half the lights were out you would complain that fans are complaining,,,,jeez.

Before you call other people "clowns" are you sure you comprehend the issue? Nobody is complaining about the band playing the other team's fight song before the game. Having the small group of RU band members who travel around the stadium playing it in the 3rd quarter of a beatdown is moronic and pathetic.

One of the worst parts of last night was having to sit through the Michigan fans singing the fight song in the later parts of the game. Finding out that the RU band facilitated it is beyond aggravating.

If the "traveling" band has been doing this for other teams and we just now noticed it because there were so many bandwagon Michigan fans there, then we just learned the practice should be stopped. If it is something done just for Michigan, pick a new traveling band.

Didn't an OSU fan post that we should expect to hear the bet rendition ever of our fight song at OSU ? It's a tradition. I heard it once and the Michigan fans around me responded well. The mini brass band sounded good.

ALSO, to quote a band member.

"I am proud to call myself a Marching Scarlet Knight. I'm honored to play the visiting team's fights songs every week. I'm grateful for the looks of pure joy on people's faces and the cheers we get when the opposing team realizes we're playing their song for them. And I am disappointed in the so called Rutgers fans who find it necessary to yell at members of our band for playing Michigan's fight song today. Maybe if you guys stuck around for the entire game AND post-game, the band could teach you a thing or two about respect, sportsmanship, and hospitality."

And from the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, with a video of the band.

"Now this is some first-class hospitality. Thank you, Rutgers University Marching Band.#GoBlue"

Quoting people on that thread:
"Thank you Rutgers. Very classy and great gesture. I hope we return the favor when you come too Ann Arbor."
"Very classy and I salute the Rutgers marching band and their excellent academic institution."
"Way classier than going for a 2 point conversion when you're up by 27....GO BUCKS!! ❤️"
"Something you will NEVER see in Columbus....Real class at Rutgers....no class EVER at osu"

(Even their Alumni Association threads devolve into OSUvsUM flame wars. Impressive!)
You see Sir Scarlet Knight? Your thinking is what makes RU look small time. You must be in the band.

Our offense makes us look small time. Not the band playing visitors fight songs. What's wrong with you people? You don't like what's happening on the field so you make a whipping boy out of the band?
You're right, but it's two separate issues. The offense is terrible but so are the band's actions.

When you think about all the work the players have put in since Coach Ash was hired, to have your own band piss down your back is infuriating. While people complained about how hot it was at the open practice, our guys were wearing helmets and pads and running their back sides off. No matter what the score was, we all know how hard these guys have worked. Our players didn't deserve this. It was an absolute disgrace. The head guy should be fired immediately for disrespecting tradition, loyalty, and our players commitment and hard work. Unreal that people don't get why this is so bad. We've read articles about lack of WiFi and rusted ice makers at the Hale Center, well I view this as a little more then a rusted ice maker. This was intentional.

Let's fire the people who haven't yet fired the band and fired it's director. Let's fire the people who sold us the tubas. Let's fire the ushers that allowed the band to move into position to do this. More firings to come.

Listen, the guy probably has 25 years in the system and has the minimum age of 55. Trying to take action against him will result in a successful 6 figure settlement. Give him a formal verbal warning and move on. If you can't see he was rubbing salt in an open wound, then you're really not getting who he is and what message he was sending to our football program.

No the band made themselves a target by repeatedly playing the visiting teams fight song.

Were you an athlete? at any level.
