Ru band hail to victors

Welcome to the Big Ten. It's a tradition. I've heard plenty of B!G bands play our tune on the road.
I like tradition and this one is fine.

You have heard the home band play the visiting teams fight song during the game? Multiple times? I counted the Rutgers Band playing it at least 6 times on Saturday. As I said earlier in this post. An 80 year old Michigan fan who has visited all of the BIG stadiums has never seen this in his 70 years of watching and rooting for Michigan. He said it was the most small time thing he has seen. He was more upset for how the teams family must think if this is how their peers (the band) act and have a lack of respect and lack of knowledge of sports and general etiquette.

Don't fire Tim, just do as a fan base, what the NYC Police did to Mayor de Blasio. Turn your backs, or better yet, everybody walk to the concourse and let them play the halftime show in front of an empty stadium. Now that would probably make all the news feeds.

1) They did this against Iowa too, and nobody cared because weren't losing by a dozen touchdowns.

2) Being a welcoming host is not a problem--just a little appreciation for the pageantry of the game. Losing by 60-70 points consecutive weeks is our problem.

3) Whoever thinks the band members should be suspended needs to step away from the computer for a few weeks and reclaim some perspective

Again they did not play Iowa's fight song repeatedly during the game. This is not a BIG tradition. The tradition is to play the song once pre game.

They walked up to the upper deck and played it in the aisle during the game, and Iowa fans cheered and sang along.

Edit -- who cares if its not a B1G tradition, maybe it will be our tradition. Just a hat tip to fans who come to NJ to watch their teams.

That sounds like a great tradition. Why not just give every visiting fan 50 yard line seat and a coupon to the snack shack too. Nothing screams big time home field advantage like bending over backwards to your opponent.

Can confirm. Traveling part of band went over to UM sections and played Hail to the Victors. Absolutely inexcusable and disgusting. You don't do that. Ever. Pregame, okay it's a tradition. But middle of a game getting your butt whooped? That's spitting in the face of the fans, the students, and especially the players. Absolutely awful

No, 481 yards and 9 touchdowns on the ground is spitting in your players faces. The Victors is simply a complatoon of musical notes.

Before the game is fine and it is traditional in the B1G...most of our fans have an issue with the travel band playing the opposing teams fight song during the game... it was insulting to the team and alumni...Smith doesn't give two craps about the team and fans he proved that saturday.... needs a B1G wake -up call this week by the Administration...He should ride out town and never again darken the Rutgers field...He 's more an embarrassment than the final score .

Well our elite 45-50 yard line high rollers have been bending over for years selling those precious seats or better yet giving them to their opposing school chums...that's more of the problem here.

I agree. Way too many visiting fans sitting in the priority sections. I thought the culture changed under Schiano regarding creating a true home field advantage. Wearing red to the games. Rooting for your team constructively. In 4 years all that has gone out the window.

Neither Smith, nor the members of the band meant to be disrespectful to the team, coach, or our fans. It stinks we were losing big at the time. However, if you bother to read twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets, the overwhelming majority thinks the move to welcome visiting fans in the way our band, and many other bands do is a very classy move.

I for one am very proud of the way our entire band program carries themselves. They represent all of us very well.

I was highly offended by that. The whole program is in shambles.

Pregame I can see. I was totally offended when I heard the RU band playing it during the 3rd qtr. Whoever thought of that idea should be fired. Can you imagine Ohio St paying hail to the victors during the 3rd qtr?

Those band members should be suspended. That's inexcusable. Embarrassing.

It was awful, embarrassing and definitely pissed me off. And it was like 5 or 6 times.

Do it once maybe okay ( I personally do not think it is right). Do it repeatedly it is awful. Eventually you would think common sense would set in and know right from wrong.

Why this needs to be explained is baffling to me.

Yes, it's "all over" social media...wanna bet those posts and tweets are from band members or Smith's small legion of loyal "fans"?

Playing the song BEFORE the game is 100% fine. I actually love it! Playing it during the game, to the opposing team's fans, is 100% disgraceful and Smith is a bullshitting, lying weasel, who almost without question did this purposely. This guy has weaseled his way through the last decade as our band director and the vast majority can't wait until he's gone. You should ask the band alumni how they feel about him. Ask the 30-60% of the band's frosh, he loses yearly, what they think about him.

Peace.

What happens Saturday will likely tell us if there were ramifications for this, though I expect very few Illinois fans.

If he does this November 19th it will get very, very, very ugly.

Smith doesn't care what the administration tells him to do, or the coaching staff and/or production staff request him to do, regardless of whether or not he initially agrees to it. He has already proven this in the past so I wouldn't expect anything to change since he's gone soon.

Tim Smith is pathetic...do you realize when OSU and Wisky do it to 1K RU fans while their up 50-0 is alot different than RU doing it down 70-0 with 10K Michigan fans in our stadium.

any idiot could figure out that it wasnt the right situation to do it in

now we have tweets and NJ.com writing stories about our fans hurling obscentities at the band...now RU fans wants to hear the opposing fight song down 70-0....Tim you are an idiot..good riddance

Completely unfortunate that obsceneties were hurled at the band, and I don't agree with that, but TIM SMITH put them in this position. Weasel.

I usually leave the Stadium that way where it would have been easy for a "conversation". But with a bunch of extra kids I was in charge of we took a different route leaving.

Probably for the best.

Still say as I did in another thread the guy doesn't care and this was a middle finger move knowing the reaction he'd get.

I don't blame the band kids at all here. None of us should.

No I don't blame the students either, clearly was not of their own volition.

The thing is the band playing the oppositions fight song in the stands is not tradition- if it happened at OSU and Wisconsin it was only there. It did not happen at the Big House last year by the Michigan band as I was there. I also talked to an MSU alum today and they also have never witnessed over the course of many games. Only at pregame do they perform the opposing fight song. Tim Smith can't be gone soon enough with his lack of leadership and skill leading the band to stupid ideas such as what we've seen this past weekend. Maybe once he's gone and with competent leadership the band will grow and also improve its engagement with band alums as most of use will have nothing to do with the alumni band until he's gone.

do you really think that the Michigan band is going to over to the visiting Ohio State section in the big house and playing their fight song in the ****ing 4th quarter
