RU-Illini game thread

But if Iowa wins, we end the B1G season in last place. I would rather finish in 13th place as sad as that is.

Deep down we know we suck wind either way. One tourney win would apply some sort of salve.

Pike's lucky he got that extension when he did. The team has given up on him. I wish we could skip the B1G tourney so we can put ourselves out of misery. Just end this sh*tshow

I really thought our team would come out on fire today after getting embarrassed at their place. We were awful. It certainly didn't help that Geo was too sick to play and Sa couldn't play. If those two were healthy, I would like to think the outcome would have been different.

An awful ending to an awful season. If there has been discernible progress from last year, it is difficult to see. If they play Illinois on Wednesday and lose, they will have allowed a bad Illinois team to beat them three times in one season. Is that some kind of record?

Okay Pike you have a lot of recruiting to do. We need shooters and we need depth. We don't have either.

Even though Illinois isn’t very good, they have more talent and are better coached.

It sucks that is was such a dissapointing effort though. This program is just spinning its wheels.

We are not even close to them talent wise. And I didn’t watch the trouncing game.

I agree they have more talent and depth. I don't think they're necessarily better in the coaching department. I still think Pikiell is an excellent coach and I would like to see him with better talent and depth. Some of what we see out there by Pike is because of lack of talent and depth. I watched his Stony Brook teams in recent years, and they were a well-oiled machine. The man can coach.

He's not good defensively, not that we should expect any more from a walk on.
True, but the only time we looked like we were running some semblance of an offense was the first four minutes with him in.

Illinois lost a lot of close games, they were better their record. 3-15 is just about spot on for us though.

As frustrated as I have been in this season, I still believe Pike has us going in the right direction. We need shooters. We need more depth. Those are obvious. However, the tenacity is there. The team is playing hard. Pike has been putting them in a situation to win several games this year when the players have stepped up. Consistency is what is needed.

Much like Flood, Jordan set this program back tremendously. I love Jordan as a player and a man, but we all know he was overmatched. Abandoning Pike would haunt us. He needs at least 2 senior classes to assess what he can do. Sorry it is an unpopular position, but the team deserves this too. Development is there, but talent needs to be upgraded still. This incoming class with add ins will be a big step in the right direction.

Back to bitching about the game..... Geo should have sat longer, Corey is not ready for the NBA, at least one foul on Freeman was horseshit and another highly questionable, and why is Sa getting injured as we near the Tourney.

I don't think anyone is ready to give up on Pike, but I don't think we have improved much individually or as a team during the course of the season. So I would take issue with the comment "the development is there". Honestly other than Eugene I am not sure I have seen much improvement amongst the group that was here last year.

I’m very familiar with Pikeill’s time at Stony Brook and thought he was a good coach...not excellent...but good. Having studs Dougher and then Warney helped too.

I’m my opinion, Underwood is better but I’ve always liked him and that’s not a knock on Pikiell. He had a helluva run at Stephen F. Austin and overachieved at Oklahoma State last year. He’s also briinging in a 5 Star big man next year.

His team has gotten better as the year progressed. Rutgers has not.

Not sure why Hobbs moved so quick on Pike's extension?

I have seen it in Sa, Baker, and Doorson. Consistency is what I think has been the issue, and I just feel the reliance on Corey has obfuscated some of it.

I just got over the flu and lost 11 pounds. Baker needed some rest. It was horrendous this year. I would have rather had him in much better shape on Wednesday. I also hope we never play at MSG again. This condensed schedule sucked. I also went to Kansas, and they are still playing games this week and have had bigger gaps. Much better.

That sentiment is awful .
Coming in second to last the best you can hope for .
Sadly, I feel the same and hoping for 13th place seems like the best that can be hoped for going into the B1G tourney.

Doesn't consistency come from development? I would not include Baker because its his first year. Someone said the outcome may have been different if Sa was available. I don't see it, since to your point who knows what you get there one night to the next and its rarely a difference maker. Same with Doorson, yes perhaps a little better but still very little of an offensive threat.

The Rutgers program does not have one good shooter on the roster this year.

Just by that being the case, Illinois is better.

Wrong matchup for Thiam down the stretch?

Jake Dadika starting over Mensah really gives you a perception of where Mensah stands.

Don't get me wrong, Dadika has given so much effort. Still just shows where Mensah is.

When Freeman did not pass to Williams on the right corner three, Williams was pissed. Plays like that made me think that maybe the team dynamic will be better next year. Just an observation. Williams was wide open.

This game clearly showed that Rutgers has no home court advantage against any league opponent. Its a given that the shooting would be abysmal but the ball handling and dribbling was really bad.Dadika was the best ball handler for Rutgers which is a telling comment since he isn't even a scholarship player.Another regular season down the drain with Rutgers at the bottom of the B1G once again if Iowa wins tonight.

I keep saying to myself that this nonsense will end but the joke is on me .This program remains mired in mediocrity because of wasted scholarships on players clearly incapable of being successful in a power conference.Drastic action is required by having at least 2 players transfer to a school at a lower level of competition.A point guard and a front court player are needed and they must be shooters/scorers.Sanders status also must be determined ASAP because he is Rutgers most talented player.

Lots of truth in this post.

My only counter is to say that Pike took a flyer on some big men that were still available to a program like RU in his first 2 recruiting classes. IMO none of them has overachieved at RU Vs their hs skills, and some have been absolute stiffs.

Pike’s recruiting skills will dictate his legacy at RU. Similar start as Gary Waters IMO. Pike seems like a better recruiter while both are VG HC’s. Gary never brought in the high end players needed to win in the BE IMO. Pike knows what he needs to do. Hope he can do it.

Cannot argue with you at all. I have given up on post game breakdown because it is apparent that this team as compiled today is so far away from doing anything in the league it will take almost a complete roster overhaul to make any significant rise in the Big 10 standings and also I think this team has generally mailed it in over the past few weeks. Hope Pike can recruit, we keep saying but he has to land better than what he has so far. Next year fans will fall for a wildly optimistic finish based on newcomers who have never played and we still have a bottom 4 recruiting class. Another 12-14th place finish looks likely next year and then hope more recruiting and growth and can improve in year 4 of Pike. That a lot of faith to put in players that are not even here yet.

Today was a disappointing and discouraging effort no matter how you look at it. RU could have won this game. RU had zero focus and played carelessly all game long and the ball handling was embarrassing. The bar is set so low that a loss like this to the team coming into the game tied for last and performing so poorly is sort of just brushed by the fanbase. If Illinois is so much more talented than what does that say for RU's hopes next year and the year after. Just how is RU going to move up if they are getting spanked by the bottom feeders and make no mistake about it....Illinois toyed with RU 2x this year.

Maybe for whatever reason it can not be done at Rutgers regardless of the coach.
Same story for 2 and a half decades with no signs of improvement. Yes we got a 4 star recruit coming in yet schools such as Northwestern are bringing in 3.
It all comes down to recruiting and Rutgers can't find a way to get a couple top Jersey kids to come here.
Another last place finish next year cannot help the cause and this coaching staff will be feeling the heat.
Is this time around finally different?
I hope so but the honeymoon period is over and the fans are restless.
There has to be some improvement soon!

I agree with almost everything. We are not mired in mediocrity. I almost wish we were mediocre.

Shoot the ball, hope Mathis can score. And love Jake but I do not want to see walkons playing.

Next year looks to be another a long year....very possibly worse than this one. My only hope is that we are playing our best ball at the end of it rather than at the beginning of it.

If we can land a grad transfer 3 point shooter then were a bubble team next year.

Considering the leap that Eugene took I am very optimistic in how our staff can develop Duke with a full off-season. Plus the addition of shaq carter who will be a legit big man who i can see averaging 10 and 8 playing an efficient game and Mathis who has a great ability to get to the tin.

Id rock with a starting 5 of

Corey-Mathis-Grad transfer 3 point shooter (big if)- Eugene- Shaq Carter. I think Geo is best off the bench playing 20-25 mins a game vs 32 mins a game
