RU vs 8/7 Michigan game thread

Even though they just took out their starters, we should be trying to narrow this gap.

OOOooohhh!!! He did not just put Liz in with 2 minutes left.

She’s going to transfer I wouldn’t stay
If I'm any one of the returning players, and there is no change in coaching staff, I wouldn't stay for more of this.

That's why it is important to get this ball rolling now on a coaching search....so you can keep good talent like Sakima, Liz, and our other returning players.

I don’t know if CVS should return but I pretty sure that she would get more out of this team than what Tim is getting out of them. He shouldn’t return next year. Now is the time to start the succession plan. Chelsea Newton’s name has been floated around here and I think she would be great. She has enough experience away from the program but she can also keep the CVS sisterhood coaching tree alive. I wonder if she could convince Jolette to join her?

Jolette, and her buddy Dawn Staley are the #1 team in the country right now. She ain't going anywhere any time soon.

Not to mention Jolette is a SC native. Being the top assistant really suits her and am happy she found her niche again after the Illini debacle.
Good point. She's in a good place right now.

I'll give her a pass on that Illinois stint. No one has gotten that car to run, including Grentz.

We need a proven head coach. You don’t go from assistant coach at one school to head coach of a Big 10 team.
I really like the idea of Chelsea getting the HC position, but wonder why she hasn't grabbed a HC spot before.
Newton's been an assistant for 13 years and I believe is behind Karen Lange (associate head coach) in Georgia's assistant pecking order

But any hire will really be a gamble, Newton would be a good gamble if a name brand or a top mid major HC can't be had.
I'm always afraid RU will hire on the cheap when hiring replacement HCs, even if the one that left made real good money.

With CVS' contract saying she'd earn the same when/if she left being thew RU HC and took a job in administration, you can bet money will be a factor if she's moved next year instead of coming back to coach.
Then name brands and up and comers might be out of RU's hiring price range.
Newton might not be willing to leave Georgia, but maybe wanting to prove herself as a HC at her old stomping grounds would make a difference

Oddly enough, she isn't the top assistant, but I don't think it matters. The top assistant at SC is Lisa Boyer, who has been with Dawn forever, and actually coached her in the pro's with the Philadelphia Rage, where Dawn played before the WNBA. We actually went to a couple of games at the Palestra.

Some final thoughts on yesterday's game........First, the obvious.....It was great to see Lasha get the kind of attention in the gameplan that her talent calls for. She didn't disappoint either. Now we just have to be careful of going to the opposite extreme of expecting her to score every time she touches it. Previously, Tim had her thinking the game so much that she stopped looking to score,....even stopped looking at the basket, even when she was open. Yesterday, I thought a couple of her touches turned into moves that were forcing the issue. Hopefully, Tim allows her to play freely like yesterday but still within the offense. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Those things should coexist. Encourage her to look for hers when it's there.

I think one of the biggest mistakes of Tim's gameplan was sticking with Osh followed by Destiny and then Awa down in the post alongside Tiya. That was one example of putting people in a position to fail. Naz, Kiser, and the third post off the bench, Cameron Williams, feasted on the shorter players we put next to them. IDK, maybe Tim is thinking back to when Tekia Mack could hold her own down in the post along with Tiya or Jordan Wallace. He has to realize that Tekia had a very high basketball IQ that allowed her to be successful at it. Awa and Destiny are nowhere close to that level and Osh is close to, but not quite there either.

Chyna was used for only six minutes....yes, she had a problem finishing over Michigan's length but she would have rebounded better and given them more resistance defensively. We got destroyed in the paint.

Biggest blunder in this same aspect was not using Sakima Walker alongside Tiya or Chyna. Like I said yesterday, that was pure insanity . He played her with seconds left in the first half and not again until the final few minutes of the 4th quarter. I thought she must have been hurt for him not to use her size and length against the likes of Naz and Kiser. Even if they displace her on the block, she fights well to recover and her wingspan makes up for positioning advantages that her opponents sometimes get on her. She comes into games getting steals on passes into the post against her. Also would have rebounded better yesterday(she had the second most rebounds in only 7 minutes of acton, one rebound behind Tyia). Likely would have been our best finisher yesterday because she was our only post with more length than the Mich posts. When she came in she offensive rebounded two in a row and Mich could only foul her.

Third area of weakness that has been a pattern so far this season, was our defense of the three point line and our lack of shooters. Outside of Shug who is probably our most pure shooter, and Lasha who gets it done from three, the others can't seem to hit the side of a barn. Sayawni just stopped shooting, Jailyn had the one good shooting game to break 1000, and Victoria is a volume shooter who historically shoots a poor percentage. She's streaky, which hurts when her shot is off.

Now, Joyia was touted as a shooter coming out of HS, but hasn't hit from there regularly since the first few games of her freshman year. Has she hit one this year? That brings me to my next point. You can see that Mich values the three as a big part of their offensive strategy to allow the posts to operate in the paint. You could see that they are getting in the reps in practice because their shooters were knocking them down. We are not doing the same with those players (Sayawni, Jailyn, Joyia, Liz) who, along with already proficient Shug and Lasha, can make our offense just as prolific as a team like Mich. Right now, they have no confidence that they can make shots from there. They have all been capable in the past.

I think CVS and staff have never put in the necessary time on shooting and it has cost us over the years. You can teach them to run sets all day but at the end of the day, if you can't put the ball in the basket, you are wasting your time in this game of basketball.

There in lies the problem with Rutgers WBB. It may be necessary and the time to defrock the system of CV Stringer ‘s methods. If a woman such as Chelsea came in she should do it her way period. If that includes aspects from Stringer’s system fine . It more than likely should be her own . We don’t have CV Stringer now and it would surprise if she did ever coach here again. Wish her well and let’s move on already.

Also meant to say that Tyia, although overmatched yesterday, showed improvement from recent struggles. She's hitting the foul line area jumpshots more regularly and was as solid defensively as could be expected against a Naz Hilmon. Fewer turnovers too. Hope she continues to work on her footwork and add more post moves because she can be very good next year.

Our young ladies can benefit by playing this offseason in the most competitive bball setting that they can find, whether it be with guys or gals. Play in a City league in Philly or North Jersey so they can increase their bball IQs. Play down at the shore. Years back I was out at the Belmar outdoor courts watching the various games on all the courts and low and behold, who do I see out there running on one of the courts?..........The legend, leading the crew, Cappie P. with some of her teammates. My memory is little fuzzy as to who all was with her but I clearly remember Rebecca Richman and Aquisha Cahoe being there and I want to say ChelseaNewton and maybe one or two more teammates. I guess these days, those games are pretty much played indoors at Hoop Group.

It is nice to have had many former players still involved in the college coaching ranks. I always believed Chris Daily if given consideration would have made a very good Rutgers coach . I realize her high paying associate head coaching under Geno prevented that however she was a MAJOR reason UConn recruited all the best.

There are restrictions. Rutgers had a player suspended for playing in an uncertified league. The coaching staff - whatever that is at the time - will direct the players.

Thanks for pointing that out. I know I typed "league" in the post but as I was writing that post, I wasn't necessarily thinking of league play exclusively. When I saw Cappie and teammates, it was just pickup games. That set of courts at Belmar was very popular every sunny afternoon in the summer back then. League play on some days,, pickup on others and the weekend. I also recall the RU men's team having a team that actually played in the summer league down at St Rose High School. How they played in this pro league, IDK. Maybe it was players who had just graduated, I don't remember.

Point is, this area is filled with gyms and parks that can improve our girls strength with the ball and overall court awareness. This region, North Jersey/NY and Philly are known for their production of court-savvy players like an Olivia Miles, Diamond Johnson, or Lashae Dwyer. Our current players have been coming from different regions that may not have exposed them to the uptempo style of play that you experience here in this region.

Might even be at an LA Fitness gym. I ran into a young lady that played for Seton Hall playing with the guys at one in North Jersey.
