RU vs Minny 1/6/22 game thread

Started watching the game from the beginning at about 8 o'clock. The broadcast was ended, I guess, as the game actually ended. I only got to watch most of the first half. The only thing worse than this crappy BTN+ is our team's play.

What I did see is a team that is ready to throw in the towel. The subbing is INSANE!! Wrong people in at the wrong times game after game. The team shows little value for the basketball and each possession. Poor passes. Confused looks on offense for most of the half.

I said to myself that, in light of the conversation of the last day or two regarding CVS' absence, I would ease up on Tim's coaching. He may not have asked to be thrusted into this situation and is just doing the best he can.

I can't help it though. Just watching the first half, it is evident that he is totally losing this team. With the exception of Chyna, everyone else seemed to be unenthused and moving like molasses. I thought he said that he had settled on the shorter rotation. Love Joyia, but she is not the one to be starting....Not with Lasha sitting on the bench...... Sakima sitting on the bench..... Jailyn sitting on the bench. Her time is not right now.

How he can't see who should be on the floor at this point is beyond mind boggling. AGAIN,....his use of Lasha in the first half was sickening to me. He is pushing it with her. He's not allowing her to be a part of things. She has got to be the most frustrated of all. It's like Tim doesn't value her at all.

As she showed early in the season with the Harvard comeback, she is a player that the rest of the team rallies around and feeds off of her success on the floor. Can't remember the team being more excited this season than at that moment way back in November.

I'm gonna try to watch the rest of tonight's game on this crappy btn+. Hopefully the replay is available by now. From the comments in this thread, I probably should just forgo the added frustration of watching the second half.

You know something is wrong when that buzzer sounds and someone is about to check in for us, and 3 or 4 of the players on the court start to run toward the bench until they realize, "Oh, I'm still in??

Looking at the box score,.......if we gave Joyia's 14 minutes to Sakima,......... Destiny's 10 minutes to Lasha....................... Awa's 9 minutes to Jailyn or Liz, we may have had a different result.

These players have the best chance to get favorable results along with the others who got plenty of time tonight. Joyia and Destiny are too one dimensional offensively at this point in the season to be getting the kind of time Tim has given them. Awa and Osh are sometimes over matched size wise. It puts us at a disadvantage in my opinion. and they may need to give way to Sakima and Chyna at the same time. Try it out, at this point there is nothing to lose.

The ones who can score the ball don't get enough time to get going. Two minutes here, three minutes there,.....Soon as they break a sweat, Tim is subbing his best players out. This may be the worst use of talent that I have ever seen.

PLEASE , PLEASE, PLEASE!!! Let Nadine or Michelle manage the game the rest of the way. For the ladies sake! For the program's sake.

Forgot all about Liz. She should have gotten some of the minutes before Joyia, Awa, or Destiny.

A few more of these kinds of games and I'm afraid we are going to have a mass exodus on our hands. How does Sakima only play 5 minutes again. Unless she's hurt, that inexcusable.

Tim needs to be relieved of HC duties right now. If there is an understanding that CVS will not be able to come back, then it's time to appoint an interim coach(Nadine or Michelle) and let it be known that the position is open for next year and the search begins now.

No BTN+ here so I can only go by what was written here. Sounds like a total train wreck right now. I thought Eatman did well when he filled in a few seasons ago, but this experience can end now. It's not likely to improve.

The time has come! Nadine or Michelle should take over now! What a mess. I feel so sorry for the girls.

Seriously, Eatman is just standing there not even coaching? He used to be so animated. Something really foul going on.
what's foul might be Tim knows he isn't capable of being a winning HC and hasn't a clue on how to change that fact.
Hate to knock the guy, but it seems, to me, he just doesn't have the chops Rutgers needs in their HC to win
Like many a good assistant, HCing really isn't their bag and Tim looks in his case that's true
Maybe that's why he never landed a HC position after his last one at Illinois-Chicago in 2002

I don’t think Martino played at all, did she? She is the only one who can hit 3’s and she is glued to the bench. Tim is overwhelmed snd I too feel for these girls. He has had enough time with these kids to know who should be his top 7-10 snd play them. Pat has to make some tough decisions about retiring gracefully CVS and hiring a top flight coach as this is like the dumpster fire Chris Ash left Schiano.

Didn't play a second. I don't understand it. She showed flashes last year and has exhibited a decent bball IQ relative to some of those who are getting time over her. She hasn't been given a chance all year....even when he called himself getting everyone a chance to play into the rotation. She was getting fewer minutes than everyone except the freshman Sanderlin in the beginning. Then at the paradise jam, that was no longer true. She became the least played on the entire team.

How do you go from, "Martino Thrust Into Leadership Role" to Martino (DNP-coaches decision). Granted she hasn't looked all that sharp when she did get on the court, but dang! No way she can look sharp when she's only in for 2-4 minutes before getting pulled.

One thing I also noticed from the start of the season,.......The few minutes that she did get on the court, she was not getting the ball when open on the wing. Jailyn was struggling mightily with running the offense and often went to the opposite wing with her passes. I could see the frustration in Liz's body language. Things haven't gotten any better for her either,......surprisingly.

Instead of lifting players up, Tim is tearing his players down. They don't know whether they are coming or going. They seem to be hesitant with almost every step that they take on the court.

If Tim is overwhelmed, he should do what is best for the program and step back in favor of Nadine. Michelle doesn't seem to want to be in charge. Also, it would be new for her.

Starting to catch back up with our lady scarlet knights and wow what is Tim doing not knowing how to coach and play the right girls. If he can’t do that Patt hobs needs to start looking for an actual womens head coach and move on with stringer. Stringer is a legend but her time is up. Time to move on tbh. Craze what are ur thoughts on moving on with a HC

Program run into the ground but many of us foretold this a few years back
not quite as you and put it.
you're trying to take credit for your bashing a program that was not going downhill, but you and others tried to make it look that way because you and a few others wanted CVS out
The only thing you got right was that the program wasn't as good as it used to be, but you also tried to make Stringer look like she was coaching a losing team after 20+ win seasons which was wrong.
You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to make your petty bashing and whining look like knowledge .

Program being run to ground just started and that's because the wrong person put in as interim HC after Vivian took a LOA.

Everyone here knows that I've been one of the biggest supporters of CVS through the good and also the bad times. I will forever be a supporter of this woman who has been such an inspirational figure for so many. I just think about the current situation, and knowing the fighter that she is, that she is undoubtably giving her all to be able to get back to her passion of coaching. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of confidence that she will be able to do so at her age after the struggle with exhaustion a few years ago. The job doesn't get easier.

With that in mind, my feelings are as I stated earlier in this post after watching another frustrating and, as someone else posted, depressing game.

I'm not sure who all is out there as potential replacements as HC. There are a few names that I've been pondering. I mentioned Legette-Jack at Univ of Buffalo, the young lady at Stony Brook(can't remember the name), may be a bit early to be able to tell how much of their success is credited to her. She inherited the team at the level at which they are currently achieving.

Chris Daly was another name that I might consider as a respected coach who can recruit and could groom a young assistant (like a Chelsea Newton or someone else) who would be primed to take over for the long term. But I trust people here who probably know Chris better than I do and kinda knocked that idea down as a ,.........No, let's not go there.

My most intriguing option is to go with one of the young up and coming, high profilers with HC aspirations, in the mold of Kara Lawson who took the job at Duke and is doing well right out of the gate. I thought of Becky Hammon but she took a WNBA job recently, I believe. I really, really am excited about and would be looking into Kristi Toliver, who is coaching on Jason Kidd's staff with the Dallas Mavericks. She has been a champion at all levels, is a self-proclaimed basketball junkie, can shoot the heck out of the three(would be able to teach it to her players), and on, and on.

If I were the RU AD, I would definitely be having conversations with Arella and Erica Wheeler(her LA Sparks teammates) and others who can give me insight into whether she would be a good fit for RU. With our facilities, access to fertile recruiting territory of NY, NJ, Philly, Conn and even the DMV area(which is not far away at all), I think she may be interested if offered.

Interesting tidbit,...... Kristi's dad was an NBA referee and former standout at James Madison Univ.? He's a part of their H of F for basketball.

For all those who feel or are concerned that the program is being run into the ground, I understand your feelings about the state of the RUWBB program right now. I just think that is not the most fitting way to describe the current situation.
We all have our dislikes for what has been going on this year, for some of us, those dislikes extend back far beyond just this year. One thing that is a fact, .......under CVS' tenure here at RU, the program has been intact. Students are graduating, program has been scandal-free, and although it has fallen from the upper echelon it continues to hold a positive image in the eye of the public. Those qualities are not in danger of changing under the current staff. The facilities are not being run down and not maintained.

The program will leave whoever the next coaching staff turns out to be a good situation to step into. And depending on the timing of hire, they will have a roster that has plenty of talent to build on and be competitive, to go along with whoever they bring with them via HS recruiting or transfer portal. That's why it is important to get going on finding a replacement sooner than later. Sakima, Chyna, Liz, Kierra, Awa, Ericka are good young building blocks that we need to keep here a RU.

Our program is in need of new leadership to get us back to upper echelon play. As Mad said, ........our issue right now is the current interim HC is not up to the task. This year's team is being run into the ground, not the program, IMO.

Kristi freaking Toliver, NO!!!!

LOL! Why not?! Because she's a Terp? Played for Brenda?

Hey, if that were your reason, I understand. But I think she may be a good one.
Nah, but you can add that in. Didn't ever care for her crying to the refs while playing in WNBA, constantly. She played for LA, and Washington.

let her get some College HC experience , to be sure she can be a good one to run the RU program..

Yes, I also was never a fan of her as a player. She was the player you loved to hate because she was with Md. who always stole a lot of talent away from our area, and also because she was so daggone good. She never smiled but was good for hitting those dagger shots. And, like you said, she did complain to the refs alot.

Although I wasn't a fan, I always had great respect for the player she has been over her career that is still going as of now with LA. She seemed like a true coach on the floor with every team she's played on.

I'm afraid she is going to get that experience and if not with us, we may be kicking ourselves. She will get looks from other big WBB programs that have openings. If she takes one and does well, it won't be so she can then be accepted by RU. She will be proving her worth as a coach to the WNBA and NBA.

Not Legette-Jack. Please no.

There is some concerning history I don't want to discuss, but every time we hear her name my wife and I grit our teeth.

Gail G please
she might be ready to get back to being a college HC again
Fatigue might not apply anymore like it did when she decided to exit the U of Texas.
after posting a 102-64 record in her 5 years there making to to the NCAA first round her last 4 years there after getting to the second round her 1'st as Texas' HC.
Wasn't as good there as her spectacular Duke tenure was
At 58 Goestenkors should have plenty in the tank to make RU a good program and hopefully repair the damage Tim's time as infirm seems to be doing.

I'm guessing Gail G might be working herself to be ready to take on a top job because she spent the 2020-21 season as the Central Michigan associate head coach then moved on to Kentucky this season to be an assistant there
She might be getting her feet wet in the college game after leaving it in 2012. and making sure she wants to run a program again.

That sounds like more of what we are trying to recover from now.
