As some may have concluded I am a big supporter of the Ladies as well as Coach O'Neil & staff & have attended many games over the last few years, including almost all this year's home games, excluding last night's which I couldn't make.

This is an excellent team. Not blazing, but good speed; very good quickness; excellent skills & instincts, excellent game awareness; & excellent team work & chemistry. And very deep.
IMO it is thinking to much right now. Against Penn State they were consumed with playing for the BIG Tournament Title instead as treating it as another game where they were going to go out take it to their opponent & beat them. As a result they were tight as bow strings. As ag67 has posted, on PS first corner & goal no one moved. They were like petrified wood. They didn't play much differently for the rest of the game. Certainly not the RU team that I saw completely out play PS earlier in the year.

Last night, though coach O'Neil had some positive things to say, he said that they played not to lose & he wasn't happy about that. Several of the ladies have spoken about going deep into the Tournament. I believe they have to put that mind set aside & play each game as just that, a game against whomever they are playing that day. In other words they have to forget about titles & tournaments & go out & play RU soccer. If they do that they will play fast & loose & all of their considerable skills & individual & team talents will come into play.

There is a psychological element at play here, even if subliminal. The ladies have to put it aside. This is oftentimes not easy, certainly easier to say than do. The ladies have to do it. Coach O'Neil & staff have to impress upon them the need to completely & totally focus on the game at hand.

Great Post! They understand what frame of mind they need to have. Getting the mental part right is always tricky.

I feel confident in the team vs Hofstra. Winning close should be a wake up call to just play their game and have fun with it, and let the results follow.

The team needs to feel confident and play with that attitude. Don't know much about Hofstra but assume we should be able to control the play and win handily. ND looms after that.

Agree with everything said. This is such a good team. Want to see them play their best.

We beat Hofstra 1-0 on a Jenna Seddon goal up at that tournament to start the season at Penn State in August. Looking at their schedule this year Hofstra has played well and had a few shut outs but tend to let in a goal or two each game. They don't seem like a side that would be favored to beat a top ten team, but it's tournament time and as we just saw every team in the dance can find a way to play really tough. Go Knights!

Watched 2nd half, 2nd OT & PK's of Hofstra vs G'town game. They could both play. From what I saw thought G'town was maybe the better side. Hofstra scored off a corner in 1st half & a PK in the 2nd. Didn't see it but they lost their top scorer due to collision in the 1st OT. Don't know how serious. Hope, for her sake, not bad. In any event, they will be tough. Go RU.

I have been to 20 of the 22 games this year. An amazing, amazing team. The weakness is in midfield. It showed in the Penn State loss. RU can make a deep run and that means the final 4. The defense in Murphy, Reed and Skroski is the best in all the land. The lack of scoring has been overcome by the top notch defense. If RU wins one more weekend at home (huge being a #2 seed) then it is off to the national quarterfinals. Cannot wait for this weekend!!

Would it be quarterfinals in round 3 or the sweet 16 (regional semi-finals)? It is a 64 team tournament which usually means 6 games to win the NC.

Thanks.

The women play Friday and again Sunday if they win. Sunday it's 16 teams playing 8 games. After this weekend, there are 8 teams playing four games....

"Can't let a rinky dink commuter college from Long Island beat the State University of New Jersey."

That description would have fit Hofstra prior to the mid-1970s but it's a very different place today, arguably offering the most complete collegiate experience of any university on LI. About half of the students live on campus and many others share off-campus housing, like here. When I first started teaching there in 1991, about 80% of my students were LI natives. Now a sizable majority of them are from North America and the other inhabited continents. That has made a huge difference in the social climate on campus and also led to a significant upgrade in the academic qualifications of the student body. The campus is quite beautiful, with most of it being an arboretum, an island of green in the concrete jungle of Nassau County.

Go RU!

If Rutgers defeats Hofstra on Friday, will we host the 3rd round game on Sunday?

Thanks.

If we win, we will also host the Sweet 16 game on Sunday. If we win that, the Elite 8 will be at #1 Virginia, or at RU again if UVA loses between now and then (unlikely). Then the Final Four is in NC.

Hofstra is/was my employer but....GO RU!
